Vertonghen has been ruled out for this weekend's game.
Following a thorough review over the past 48 hours by our medical staff as well as by an independent neurologist with special interest in sport-related concussion today, it has been concluded that Jan Vertonghen did not suffer a concussion during Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Ajax.

The Belgium defender suffered an injury to his nose due to a challenge during the game which resulted in heavy bleeding. He was deemed fit to continue playing after an on-field assessment. All Football Association concussion guidelines were followed.

Jan was immediately withdrawn as a result of the player informing medical staff that symptoms were developing suddenly and that he no longer felt stable standing up. We have been advised that this was the result of a presyncopal episode, a near faint.

The specialist has recommended that the player undertakes a brief period of rehabilitation before returning to training.

Well, it hasn’t been pretty, but protecting an 8 point goal differential isn’t something I should worry about. Right?

1. You better hope URI doesn’t rise from the ether and come in this thread.

2. If they did fuck this up no one would ever mention lasagna again.

Yeah, I should be less grumpy about this shit. Five straight 1-0 matches with four of them going the wrong way will do that to you.

So I assume they throw everything at Ajax and then start 11 mid and defensive players next Sunday?

It is probably a good thing that Everton was eliminated from the 2020 Europa Cup chase today, so they don't have anything to play for next week.

I don't think Spurs even have 11 healthy midfield and defensive players.

Poch will start the best XI he can in both matches, because (except for rotating fullbacks) that's what he does.

I wonder if we see Janssen on Sunday, since Son is suspended.

I think whatever the best XI is for Ajax obviously, and then just see where we are with health, etc. If they survive Ajax, I'd rest anyone I possibly could next weekend (difficult with injuries and red cards), or at least not be counting on guys for 90 minutes.

I have criticized Lucas at nearly every opportunity (he's given Spurs plenty), but he entered the pantheon yesterday. He's above reproach. Massive massive performance.

I'm still on a high from the game yesterday, even after the Celtics funeral. That ball slowly rolling past the keeper's arm and into the corner of the net seemed to play out over 20 minutes instead of 3 seconds. I watched the game by myself, in my parents living room and just cried into my sweater. What a game.

I did this at MSG for the '94 NBA Finals - Rockets/Knicks. I didn't have a rooting interest and went just for fun with some Knicks fans. It was a $5 gate which went to charity. The concession stands were open and I drank a lot of beer. It was a great time. I remember leaving the Garden and stumbling into a bunch of guys who were coming from a GWAR concert and they were dressed in armor, covered in stage blood, etc. I also remember being in an Irish pub-type restaurant later that week, with one of the games in New York just starting - they had the 3-4-5 games in that series at MSG, IIRC - and they switched the TVs off the game over to the OJ Simpson/Al Cowlings police chase in the white Ford Bronco. Everyone in the restaurant was super pissed off until word got out of what was going on and then people started coming in off the street to watch.

So yeah, Spurs.

Don't sign Gomes please.

In other news, the Tottenham's Women's team was promoted to the Super League for next year (the PL equivalent)

https://cartilagefreecaptain.sbnation.com/2019/5/10/18564414/tottenham-hotspur-women-wsl-promotion-license-official

This is MASSIVELY EXCITING for women’s football at Tottenham Hotspur. As we’ve noted several times in the past, Tottenham Hotspur Ladies (Tottenham Hotspur Women as of next season) have existed as a semi-professional club since they were folded into the organization as an associate member. That means that the players are not full time professional athletes and are playing for very low wages in their spare time.

However, thanks to a mandate that took effect beginning this past season, only fully professional clubs can participate in the WSL.

Draw today clinches Champions League for next season. Of course, winning in 2.5 weeks does the same thing.

Get healthy.

It sure was a delight to see Eriksen nail that free kick. Glad to see him get his mojo back on those prior to the final.

Anyone know a Spurs friendly bar in the North Shore (Amesbury area)? I'm there for the Champions League final (and a high school graduation) and don't want to be completely surrounded by Reds. Any idea on colors of Winner's Circle?

First have was a slog and then a fun game broke out.

Spurs and Everton fans good naturedly joining forces to slag Liverpool was fun.

As someone who watches La Liga, my feeling is to stay away from Bale. I mean, Bale could replace Llorente and I suppose that exchange is an upgrade. But taking back Bale is betting on a return to the English-speaking world will lift his spirits and that, with a better attitude, Bale will return to his former glory.

Agreed, the Bale from that video is long gone and never really showed up in Madrid. If he replaces Llorente, I will be the first to welcome him with open arms. If he's intended to be a fulltime regular starter, no thanks. All that being said, getting Bale for $10M is very Spursy business.

Tottenham close in on deal for Fulham starlet Ryan Sessegnon as club aim to quell any doubts Mauricio Pochettino has about ambition.

Other reports says his brother could be involved in the move as well.

Carty Free said this:

With Fulham going right back down, Sess is almost certainly leaving, because despite seemingly underperforming for a trash Cottagers team this season, he’s still a very young player with a huge ceiling, potentially a generational talent
There are some rumors that ManU might be looking to get involved.

A 10m transfer might be good business, but as reported this would be 10m for a one-year loan. Bale makes 15m euros/year, which is about 13m gbp. 23m gbp for one year of Bale doesn't sound so great to me.

Honest question, but isn't it relative? In other words, compare this to the Gomes rumor. How much more would Bale cost than Gomes? Gomes' loan to Everton was $2.25M and you have to think that will at least double on an annualized basis. Is there somewhere to see wages on Transfermarkt? I also assume that if Spurs are for real on this that Madrid paying part of his wages would have to be part of the deal. I shit on Bale a lot, but getting him back to Spurs for reasonable numbers would be a coup.

If Madrid are demanding a 10m loan fee, I can't see them then picking up part of his wages.

For wage info I usually just google it. Google says Gomes makes 4.16 gbp/year, or less than a third of Bale's wages.

Opportunity cost does matter, but from that perspective I'd rather spend the money to fill a position of need. Spurs are pretty solid at the forward positions with Kane/Son/Lucas/Dele. They certainly could use some depth there and Bale makes them better on paper but I'd rather throw the big cash at midfield, or use that money to extend Eriksen.

SPURS MADE A SIGNING!!!

https://cartilagefreecaptain.sbnation.com/2019/5/14/18623499/tottenham-hotspur-transfer-news-rumors-isak-solberg-keeper-age-fifteen

According to Stavanger Aftenblad (paywalled, as reported by football.london), Tottenham have secured the signing of 15-year old Norwegian keeper Isak Solberg on a three year youth contract that could eventually turn into a professional deal. Solberg is a Norway youth international (he has his own Transfermarkt page) with caps at the U15 and U16 level and is being signed from Norwegian second division club Bryne FK. He’s 6’2” at age 15, so pretty good height for a young guy.

What do you mean by the bolded? It seems like you and I agree that 10M for a loan deal is steep, but if that's the case, then why would Madrid balk at paying some of his wages?

From a practical standpoint, it would make sense to just balance out those numbers. In other words, agree on how much the "transaction" (fee + wages) should cost and simplify it.

Looking at it that way, let's compare Gomes and Bale. Gomes makes 4.16M in wages and likely will have a fee of ~5M for a total of ~9M. Would you rather have Bale at 12M? 15M?

I agree with you that it's the total transaction fee that matters. But because of that, I interpret Madrid's demand for a 10m loan fee as taking that into account, and therefore indicating they won't subsidize any of the wages. If Madrid were willing to pick up some of the wages, they wouldn't be demanding any loan fee at all.

I don't get this. Maybe I'm missing something but my read is that Madrid is demanding the higher loan fee because they will be paying some of Bale's wages so that Spurs will be responsible for something equivalent to what Kane is making. Thus not blowing up the wage structure.

Here's another interpretation - Zidane doesn't have Bale in his plans moving forward, the team needs to offload his contract in order to make a huge signing, but Bale has no desire to actually leave. So this 10M loan fee being floated (most likely by Perez) is a calibrated effort to drum up a market for Bale without tanking his value. My guess is that this will stretch out into August and Bale ends up on a heavily subsidized loan some place no one is currently expecting, like Roma.

Bale is still a good player who could help Spurs. But 23m is too much for one season. I don't think it would be shocking if he ended up back in Tottenham for a year. It's one of the few places he'd be happy to go, I think. Wages are the biggest problem. But if Madrid is happy to just get the money off the books, it could work.
