I think one of my favorite aspects of draft day coverage is how the networks display more or less the same number of ‘team needs’ for the Rams, Chiefs, and Patriots as they display for the Raiders, Bucs, and Cardinals.

Then when a sorry ass team with literally a need to upgrade like 20-25 roster spots to contend picks a big prospect, someone inevitably says ‘that fills a need for them for the next 10-15 years.’ Because guys are playing a decade plus, and for the same team, all over the place!

I do like the draft; it’s a well-conceived marketing pitch to fans of shitty teams that THIS could be the draft.

We could post our favorite Jets video, but your post made me think of this wonderful moment for the City of Cleveland

Patriots pick is likely to be around 11:30 at night for those wondering... unless they trade up for Hock.

Or out of the first round entirely.
I wouldn't mind trading back into the 2nd round and picking up an extra pick that allows them to trade for Rosen/AJ Green and still pick a quality rookie. Either up for Hock (if he slips to the high teens) or down to get more ammo for trades.

I'll be an hour into Avengers at that point. I won't be checking my phone but man...I will want to know what's going on with the Pats. Oh well, sacrifices will need to be made.

Will the Patriots make any trades of picks for vet players this weekend?
I would put the over/under at 1.5 players traded to the Pats. Seems like they've found an inefficiency in the market by swapping picks in exchange for players with 1 year left on their deal.

Yes, first time for ABC. I understand it will have its college football analysts deployed to view the draft through that lens.

NFL reportedly toying with notion of putting the draft on every network with which it has a contract. If so, the NFL draft essentially replaces national political conventions.

I prefer NFLN so I avoid that douche Mel Kiper Jr.

Seahawks will definitely trade down with 1 first rounder today and likely both of them.
NFLN looks really inviting now that there's no Mayock. Oh wait, they still have Casserly and also have LDT this year. Never mind.

ABC also plans to have Robin Robert's and celebrities such as Luke Bryan and Bobby Bones. Their plan is to focus on the stories of the prospects while ESPN focuses on the X's and O's.

I'm more excited for this draft than I have been in any draft for a long time, simply because I think its the most important draft the Patriots have had in a long time. Every draft is obviously important to building and maintaining a team but it just seems like this year we've got the perfect storm of a team that really needs a serious infusion of young talent at some key spots (mainly DL, WR, and TE), a draft that happens to have a lot of quality depth at those very same spots, and a lot of picks to make. Hitting a home run in this draft could set the Patriots up for a lengthy extension of the dynasty and really pave the way for the post-Brady transition, a complete whiff and I think we might have seen the last true Super Bowl contender of the Brady/Belichick era. Obviously there are a lot of outcomes in between those extremes but the stakes just seem really high.

+1.

More generally -- am I right that most years, and certainly last year, we've had a blockbuster leak by this time this day that proves out, and right now we've got nothing?

Edit -- generally, not Pats specific.

Absolutely, we've usually had leaks or even pre-draft trades (ie, the Rams and Eagles moving up to position themselves to draft Goff/Wentz few years ago) that greatly clarify what's going to happen at the top.

It definitely seems like there's much more uncertainty this year, even with the first overall pick, and nobody really has a clue what is going to happen.

Some Patriots-related nuggets from Chris Price.

--A trade up would likely be with either Oakland or Seattle.
--If there's a draft curveball in the 1st round from NE, it would be for a secondary player. He specifically mentions that the Pats like this year's crop of corners and especially like Johnathan Abram.
--Price really likes QB Ryan Finley as a Pats fit.

Seattle makes a lot of sense; they need more picks, even with the Clark deal.

You'd rather see a movie that you could see tomorrow, or even Monday after the draft is over, then watch the first round of a draft that only happens tonight?

You should be ashamed of yourself

What is there to "watch" with the draft? It is not a sports event. It's just a guy going to the podium to announce picks. You can read the picks in the paper the next day (not an actual paper, what is this, 1990?)

Okay, then how about "follow' the draft in real time with a bunch of other fans. Because that still tops a movie that can be seen four days later

I'm not missing the whole draft. I'm missing the last few picks of the first round. If the Pats trade up, I'll see it. If they don't, there's like a 90% chance they'll trade out of the first round altogether. It's entirely possible I'm not going to miss...anything actually.

I might actually go to bed after the 24th pick for this reason. If the Pats don't trade with Seattle or Oakland, what are the chances they actually pick at 32? I would have said the same thing last year, but then of course they ended up standing pat at both picks... odds that happens again??

Shocking picks and mega trades are fun, for me, to follow in real time. Especially when the latter precede the former and you’re wondering who team X gave all that up for.

What network are people leaning towards? Is this the first time ABC has had draft coverage?
It is the first time ABC has offered draft coverage -- they're planning to program toward a broader and more gender-balanced audience than ESPN will be targeting. More up-close-and-personal stories about the players and their families, while ESPN will have more nuts-and-bolts about draft strategy and how players will fit the schemes of the teams they're joining. Robin Roberts anchors on ABC.

Me, I think this is a good thing. While the broader coverage won't be my own selection, I think it's great to make something more accessible available to less hardcore viewers.

I like Guy and Pennel in the middle. Bennett can be an inside-outside chess piece. That's all well and good. We have Wise and Rivers on the outside - to me, that is the area crying for an upgrade.

I'd like Montez Sweat (1st, trade up), Clelin Ferrell (1st), Chase Winovich (2nd) or Anthony Nelson (late 3rd/4th)

If true, a mistake by doctors at the combine may have cost Sweat a lot of money (if he falls quite a bit, which still seems plausible since its been reported that many teams took him completely off their draft boards due to the heart issue).

Pats with 12 picks. I'm expecting a few trades that won't effect the current year at all, like trading a 2019 4th for a 2020 3rd with no players moving at all. He's not taking 12 players, but he's got stock to do whatever he wants. Should be interesting.

Jeffery Simmons? Jerry Tillery? Darnell Savage? JoeJuan Williams?

Based on your mock, I'm either looking to trade with SEA at 29 to get Ferrell or looking to get out of the 1st round and drop a few spots, if the draft goes as mocked.

One possibility I'm thinking about is trading 32, 64 and 243 to SF for 36, 67 and Solomon Thomas, if SF is interested in trading into the end of the 1st round.

I originally had Tillery, but with Chung getting older and the position he plays is so complex I ultimately thought getting a replacement for him now would be good. He can learn from Chung and ultimately can take over from him when his contract runs out after 2021.

I feel like the TE need is so great, and the importance of a page setting TE in this offense so important, they will go up for one.

Patriots having one of the smallest boards is like tax day.
