49ers war room.
On the right are two men in conversation who began their NFL front office careers in the early to mid 00s. Adam Peters with the Patriots, and Martin Mayhew when an ex-teammate became President and CEO of the Detroit Lions. Matt Millen. John Lynch made Adam Peters his first hire, and hired ex-teammate Martin Mayhew. Side Note: Jim Schwarz takes plenty of blame for his time as HC of the Lions, but they improved their first three years under him, and poor drafts were a large part of his downfall the final two years.

Paraag Maranthe is on the left, doing the financial side of the salary cap and contracts.

Kyle Shanahan has John Lynch as his voice in every conversation, with others to handle GM tasks that come with experience. I'd imagine this is what scared Joe Ellis from hiring Kyle Shanahan with the Broncos. Adam Peters worked with Elway since he became President and GM in 2011. Elway could have remained President of Football Operations(probably a more appropriate job for John Lynch), promoted Adam Peters to GM, and hired Kyle Shanahan. Mike Shanahan certainly still has input, which would have been too much for Joe Ellis. Martin Mayhew would be on NFL Network or unemployed.

John York is pacing in front of the draft board so he can be in the way while not giving a shit and being on his phone.
That's quite the tale of that 49ers brass picture, almost like a where's Waldo analysis. Adding a bit: that's a picture/portrait of John McVay on the right, 49ers GM through most of the Bill Walsh glory years and grandfather of the current Rams coach. Paraag Marathe was a scrappy little kid who loved to get into games on the street even though his strict parents would always rather him being inside studying. He did OK, getting an undergraduate degree at Cal Haas School of Business and an MBA at Stanford. Nobody thought he'd end up a sports executive. That's all I have to add.

There's a lot of interesting info / scenarios in your post, but I don't agree with this. Mayhew has a background as a former player and a former GM, and he has a law degree. Those guys don't grow on trees. I don't know that he deserves another crack at running drafts, but he'd be somewhere else if he wasn't with SF. After getting fired from DET he immediately latched on with a VP Football Operations gig for the Giants before the 49ers hired him away.

I should have left that last line out. The 49ers have one of the most interesting front offices because you can see the evolution of players turned front office executives. Although John Lynch has no experience, he's surrounded by people who are familiar with the situation. Adam Peters was with John Elway, and Martin Mayhew was with Matt Millen. Mike Shanahan coached Lynch for four years in Denver, so Shanahan the younger knows he's getting a strong ally.

All of this sounds great in theory, but eventually you want results. Lynch and Shanahan have six-year contracts. They could be a surprise next year and have an 8- or 9-win season, but I don't think they'll feel the pressure to get results or lose their job until 2020.

More details of the Thielen deal: it's an extension of the existing contract, so he's under contract for 6 more years (existing 2 years $13.5M per Mike Garafolo, but not sure that's right looking at the numbers on OverTheCap). He's getting $35M guaranteed per RapSheet. My first thought is that was a steal, but I didn't realize he's going to be 29 before the season starts, so when the extension kicks in, he'll be 31 and that can be the edge of the cliff for most receivers. His AAV is going to be more than Diggs' and Diggs is 3 years younger. If he was 26 or 27, I'd say it's a steal, but at 29, will he remain productive in his 30s? Not sure I'd take that chance.

Holy shit. Is he really worth that kind of $$? Yes, I agree that he is a good QB. But holy cow that is a lot of dough.

107 total guaranteed...

Time for Rodgers to threaten to hold out again...

I’m scared what this means for Brady, as well.

He's pretty much single-handedly kept Seattle a contender even as they failed to spend on OL help and let much of their vaunted D to depart.

But paying this much to a 30 year-old guy who's pretty reliant on his legs seems quite risky.

He’s very durable and productive. He’s a good team guy. And it’s 4 years. I would do that contract and not look back.

You get into trouble if you pay Blake Bortles or Joe Flacco 20M. Paying Russell Wilson 35M annually? Swallow the pill and count yourself lucky you have him.

I’m slightly surprised they didn’t pursue the tag, but I suppose the Cousin experience in WASH proved a cautionary tale.

Wondering what this will do for the Sunday Ticket Package?? Any chance this is just a negotiating tactic to try and get the league to agree to a more reasonable contract?

Well, DirectTV Now. Which is different than regular DirecTV.

NFL Network is the only network I've missed (and I haven't missed it all that much) since I switched from DirecTV to YouTube TV.
Ditto. Really hoping YouTube TV picks it up this year

Lovely story. So the mother of the three year old is the same woman he brutally beat in college when she was 8 weeks pregnant with said child. She is also his fiancée. So not his first time going after this child. This POS should be banned for life.
Here’s another nice little nugget from that story:

Wonderful.
They were quick to cut Hunt... we'll see with Hill.
Tyreek Hill under investigation for alleged battery. Reportedly, his young son has a broken arm. Not a good situation.

https://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article227983684.html

The child was taken from the house:

With an investigation regarding potential child abuse allegations still open, the Kansas City Star reports that the three-year-old son of Chiefs receiver Tyreek Hillrecently was removed from the custody of Hill and the child’s mother, Crystal Espinal.

Per the report, the date of removal isn’t known. The child’s current living arrangements also were not specified.

According to the Star, Hill and Espinal reportedly have been engaged in a legal proceeding in family court known as a “child in need of care” case. The Starreports that Hill and Espinal were at the county courthouse on Wednesday.

No arrests have been made or charges filed in connection with a pair of police reports generated in March, with one focused on battery and the other on abuse and neglect. The Star reported on March 15 that Hill’s son had suffered a broken arm at some point.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/04/18/report-tyreek-hills-son-was-recently-removed-from-the-home/

This is the NFL so they won’t come down hard on him I bet.

I continue to be amazed by how little information has come out on this.

2 incidents within a few weeks where police had to get involved, a broken arm for a 3 year old and the child being removed from the custody of Hill and his fiancee certainly makes it seem like a real life issue. Yet, the only thing we hear are that there are no charges and "legal proceedings" with the NFL being on pause until the legal process plays out.

You'd think the Chiefs would be looking for some sort of certainty, whether it is outright cutting him, a long suspension etc. But even putting aside the football piece of it, either something happened here or it didn't, but you'd think they'd have an idea of it by now, right?

By the way, according to that article above the family is currently pregnant with twins. This while their current 3 year old son has been taken away from them.

I almost threw up when I read that. Domestic abuse is bad enough. Child abuse is intolerable. I sit on the board of the local CASA (Court Appointed Special Guardians) which trains and deploys volunteers who act as Guardians ad litem for children in abuse and neglect situations. Particularly with the opiod crisis, the agencies have been overwhelmed by cases like this. CASA is quite proactive in ensuring judicial internvention in cases of this sort, in concert with the governmental agencies.

If I ran the KC Chiefs, I'd suspend Hill indefinitely, pending resolution of his legal exposure. Letting him practice for the indefinite future simply provides an opportunity for outrage to cool off as time passes, with Tyreek ultimately reading a statement provided by his agent about how he regrets his loss of control, is enrolled in anger management (again), is working hard with his fiancee to create a stable long term relationship, etc. You know the drill.

(And no, that doesn't accord him due process protection, because due process doesn't apply to nongovernmental actions. I don't know however what the current NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement provides.)

I wouldn’t be opposed to NFL teams allowing or even encouraging fans to throw beers at players that have hit a woman or child. Seems pretty appropriate.
yes, because sort clod enough in control of his emotions to throw a beer is only going to hit the play. ... no chance of hitting a woman or child ion the vicinity

E5 has clearly chosen to drink his beer, rather than throw it.

Last year he had 35 receptions (in 46 targets, 76.1%) for 400 yards (11.4 ypc).

And these are just a couple of highlights (and highlights make anyone look good) but these are nice plays:

I wouldn't mind him here for his last season. Still need to draft one or two TEs but I think Watson might have one more solid year left.

Well if clod 1 misses and hits a woman or child with his beer then the clods a few rows behind him need to toss their beers at clod 1
Duuhhhhhhhhhh

That Clark trade is sheer lunacy by KC and a stroke of genius by Seattle. The organization that had to release Kareem Hunt and still employs Tyreke Hill elected to trade 3 high picks and give Frank Clark $105 million.

I can't even recall a worse / more indefensible series of events for a team. Independent of each other (and Dee Ford) the contract and the trade are both colossal overpays. When combined with each other, and the fact that the team is going to have to make some tough decisions in the near future -- this is embarrassing.

I legitimately think this safely removes Kansas City from long term contention beyond 2019.

On the other side, this was a great trade for Seattle.

They had few picks this year, and now can trade one of them for depth picks ... or package both for a higher pick in the first

The question for me is: Will it make KC better in 2019? I think it does. Which is the immediate problem.

Mahomes is 23 in this regard. I be looking to building sustainable success each and every year.

I would agree that Okafor + Clark + Honey Badger > Houston + Ford + Berry for the coming season.

That said, they are already minus Hunt, and if they are minus Hill, overall they look potentially worse. Of course I also thought they'd be worse in 2018 than 2017 due to the first year learning curve for Mahomes so it shows you what I know.

One thing I think this does show is that they view their "window" as the next two years before Mahomes has to get paid. Might as well load up as best they can and go for it because it's going to be much tougher sledding when he is making $35-40M.

Better than last year's team or better than they were before the trade? If the first, I think it depends on Tyreek Hill. They are also super tight up against the cap.

I am curious if the CBA and the salary cap roll-over (which is obviously related as both end in 2020) were a driving factor in the trade. Maybe there is some benefit in getting your guys under contract now.

The Seahawks said from the beginning they needed to be blown away by an offer. I love Frank Clark, but I sure am glad they're not paying him $105M.

No chance they trade up. They'll probably leapfrog downward with both picks to accumulate multiple later round picks. The draft just got really interesting for Seattle. I could see 3 or 4 trades over two days working their way down until they get to a spot where they're ready to get their guy.

I would have thought that the Chiefs would have had an advantage if they stalled the trade talks out
Allegedly the Jets were hot to trot on getting Clark, but were unwilling to give up #3. The Chiefs probably wanted to jump in before the Jets gave in.

Oh, I agree, that's the better course of action. Just a really smart move on their part
