I look forward to this thread being bumped after Bennett is cut after the 2nd preseason game.

I kid. I hope.

I like the trade.
It wouldn't be that bad even if that happened. No dead money, moved back 50-60 slots on day three (where the talent pool is really flat) of the 2020 draft. The cost here is essentially zero.

Tim is right. Joe and Silverdude are great for providing this info.

Bennett's charity looks legit, I am glad to say. No salaries to friends and families, which is usually where the BS lies. They appear to support worthy organizations.

The only negative I see is that there's just not that much money being raised or spent on programs. To be fair, the 990 form is from 2015. Hopefully with Bennett's new contract those figures went significantly up more recently. I also question if he really spent 20 hours per week doing foundation work, but that is just me being picky

Our own @Super Nomario with a shout out in this Phil Perry article about the Bennett trade

https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/patriots/why-patriots-trade-michael-bennett-makes-sense

Why? According to some of the numbers compiled in this piece by Inside the Pylon's Dave Archibald, the odds of finding a significant contributor in the fifth round aren't all that different from the sixth, seventh or undrafted free agency. If another team wants to value those fifth-rounders more than the Patriots do, they're happy to give it up to get a known veteran in house. And if a Day 3 pick comes back to New England as part of the deal -- as it does in the Bennett trade -- even better.

I agree. The video that the police released makes a big jump. Here he is in the casino > Jump > here he is outside the casino on the ground. See? Everything was on the up-and-up.
... I think the cops have a tough job, but that video doesn't disprove that the first cop o pit him on the ground didn't pull his gun and threaten him.
Ahhh the old guilty until proven 100% innocent approach. Good stuff.

The fan comments here, a very pro-Patriot hangout in the main, are so revealing. They demonstrate why Trump won the Anthem battle in a rout.

Good for Bennett and good for the Pats.
Yeah.

All I expect from the team and players is that they find a way to effectively balance team cohesion with individuality. Picking where you draw the line on exactly what level of behavioral uniformity you expect among your players is crucial, and could enable a coach or manamgement to render something like the anthem protests a non issue.

E.g. everyone must show up on time, play hard, and exhibit a level of mutual respect for teammates/coaches. Not ‘everyone’s behavior must reflect the owner’s personal political or cultural positions or means of expressing them.’ It’s as big of an issue for the team as the team wants to make it, in large part.

Are the Patriots allowed to turn Bennett's 2019 salary into guaranteed money to spread this year's cap hit over two years? Or can they not do that since this is his first year with the team?

Listened to the Quick Slants podcast last night. Tom Curran really cannot stand this guy and thinks he'll be bad for the locker room. He also claimed that Bennett freelances a lot.

I am generally a Curran fan, so his level of vociferousness about this was interesting.

If Bennett wants to get paid again, he's smart enough to know that if he performs in New England he'll earn a big pay day.

Twitter thread with video from all of Bennett's sacks from this year. What strikes me is he lines up at every D-line spot.

Obviously that thread is going to make him look good, but it was nice to see him in action. Really good with his hands, lines up everywhere, had a couple of strip sacks and beat quality guys like Solder and Tyron Smith off the edge. They should be able to move him around the DL to get after the QB in passing situations.

And there it is

After delaying as long as possible the Houston charges were quietly dropped. Unsurprisingly the Police Chief decided not to call national media in for a press conference
