After seeing his performance in the World Series, I'm disappointed the Yankees didn't sign him. It would have been like the second coming of Afraud.

"Biggest" contract until Harper's in the next week or so.

Padres could have a pretty good lineup, but the rotation is shaky. It would make sense for them to now go after guys like Gio and Clay on one year deals, if not Kuechel.

I’m jealous. $300M to play baseball in San Diego. Lots of offensive talent on that team now. Need to acquire some pitching.

After all that talk of the offseason, I'm surprised to see such a big contract.
I'm surprised not because of the off-season talk, but that it is so late in the off-season. Usually the big money, record-setting contracts are early on and the result of urgency to get the guy signed before the other team does. Wonder who it was the Padres were bidding against?

Happy that he's in the NL, and on the west coast, far away from Boston. Unless something dramatic happens, he'll play the next five years in relative obscurity. Works for me.

Ehh, a year ago people were talking about that signing figure as the absolute starting point more so then the top end potential that needed to come out of a team on the low end in terms of committed payroll going forward.

He'll still probably end up a Yankee in 3 years once the Padres inevitably go into fire sale mode again.

Good for him for holding out for the money. I have a hard time seeing a Preller plan work – especially one that's got an 8-year deal for Eric Hosmer as a key cog — but there's gotta be a few that stick from that stable of Gore, Paddack, Morejon, Espinoza, Quantrill, Lamet, Lucchesi, Nix, Avila, Kennedy, Allen, and Strahm.

In three years their window is opening, not closing. TINSTAAPP and all that, but they have 9 prospects in the current MLB top 100, including five starting pitchers.

Nothing like 7 more years of a 1B/DH with a 99 OPS+! I predict he'll be traded to KC with $70m in like a year.

Former Marlins President David Samson is a regular on the LeBatard show local hour - there are a lot of reasons to dislike the guy, but he is rather intelligent and speaks with no filter at this point - Anyways, he’s been saying for a while that the fact Harper and Machado were I signed was entirely due to their agents, and each agent promising their client that they’d land the richest contract ever. That it’s basically just been a big game of chicken...I’ve been viewing it through that lens because it made sense to me, so it’s not too surprising for that reason.
It will be interesting to see how fast the Harper domino falls now.

It's the Padres. And Preller.

They ultimately can't help but screw things up, and Hosmer is already looking like a dead money weight they won't realistically be able to trade away for any relief when they do. So color me skeptical that type of scheduled window opening ever actually presents itself.

They have Wil Myers on the books through 2022 also but nothing really besides that. This always seemed like the best fit for player and team since it started being rumored a month or so ago, plenty of cash to spend for SD and low expectations and minimal spotlight for Machado.

That sounds a lot better in surface theory and when you don't factor in team's willingness to spend money track record.

Having $73m of their limited payroll flexibility tied up in the trio of Machado/Hosmer/Myers isn't looking like a great team fit in my book.

Right, but it's the Hosmer/Myers part of that that's the problem, probably not the Machado part.

Also not sure how much it matters but the AAV numbers on Hosmer/Myers are much lower than the actual salary ones, $31M AAV combined from 2020-2022 and $43M combined in actual salary.

Hosmer and Myers are negative value right now, but both are young enough where they can still be productive players.

Good deal for SD. Machado is plenty young enough to still be elite in a year or two when the young Padres mature; until then, spend the max on the remains FA willing to sign one year deals.

The Machado deal becomes a problem because there is still risk involved in that, and now you are taking that risk on top of those 2 overpays which in all likelihood will already be weighing their limited flexibility down. It would of been one thing for the Padres to sign Machado here had they not already just flushed a huge chunk of money down the toilet on Hosmer last winter. As it stands now this essentially just amounts to a luxury piece that makes about as much sense for them (imo) as It would for me to go out and buy a ferrari to park in my apartment complex driveway.

Small market teams signing big ticket free agents to mega deal contracts, with the supporting mindset that they'll eventually go on to help supplement a roster you expect to see built years down the road and on the back of winning the prospect lottery, is just as big a loser bet as these mega deal contracts themselves.

Rosenthal reporting Machado had a higher AAV offer from Chi Sox.

Have to wonder if he has an opt out clause after 5 years why he wouldn’t just take the deal offering a higher AAV.

Wonder if Chicago wasn’t offering an opt out.

AAV, not necessarily total value.

What if you had good reason to believe your were moving from your apartment complex to a much nicer house in a year or two, and the ferrari was a very unique car that would not be available if you waited until you were actually in the much nicer house?

Manny Machado just signed the largest sports deal in US history. And Donald Trump is president. USA. Where character counts.
Can we keep politics out of threads like these? I know it's too much to ask, but FFS let's give it a try
