Seriously?
It’s like you know nothing about football.
Fuck Marino.
This is the Nations Tears thread, not the ‘let’s talk glowingly about Dan Fucking Marino.
If you want to talk about Marino’s on-field prowess, take it outside.

(Please note: my ire is feigned. But still: fuck Marino)
I stand corrected.

Wasn’t that most QBs back then? Or successful ones except for outliers like Cunningham? Also, didn’t Marino have a much bigger arm?
Brady used to have an absolute cannon. Watch that bomb to Moss in the super bowl. But he's 41 now. Marino had a cannon, too, he retired at 38 years of age and he didn't have the same arm in 1999 that he had in 1985.

Right Here
I stand corrected.
Best take I ever saw was on one of the pre-game/half-time shows and Boomer Esiason was describing Peyton Manning (who hadn't won a ring at that point in his career) as this generation's Dan Marino... Only problem was that Marino was two seats down from him. Dude was pissed.

I've watched that about five times since I posted it and Dan Marino's face at the end makes me laugh every single time.

Boomer, calling Peyton Manning "this generation's Dan Marino" because of his post season failures, while sitting 6 feet away from Dan Marino, earns him a lifetime position on whatever we're calling the good list these days.

Good Lord.

I remember watching that live as well. Boomer’s point was sound and not really a dig at Marino or Manning, but the players around them. I think Marino is just reeling there before fully grasping the point. There’s some of that exchange that is cut off in the video.

Edit: still, fuck Dan Marino.

The point did seem sound, but my take was that Marino just doesn't like that particular career definition in the first place.

edit: Says the guy that had never heard of that clip until I just saw it just now

No, why would he? Even though it’s pretty complimentary under the surface, it still paints him as kind of a loser who wasn’t enough to cover the other guys. The reason I love it is it shows he’s still sour about not winning the SB, which warms my heart. I bet he’s built a Lombardi in his basement out of Isotoners.

It’s really not his fault Finkle missed that kick.

I’m sure part of it is that Boomer is criticizing him. Like what did Boomer ever do?

Went to the same number of Super Bowls (also Lewis Billups?), but you’re correct. It was a backhanded compliment.

Boomer continues to do his thing on The Fan each morning. The only NY-based sports podcast I still subscribe to. He skewers the Jets regularly--especially the ownership--and it is a joy to listen to.

When Marino defensively interrupts Boomer to say "Now wait a minute, I got to a Super Bowl"... well, let's just say most folks don't measure QB greatness by your ability to get to one Super Bowl. Or is Tony Eason great and I just forgot?

To be fair to Shula he won 2 sb and got back 2 more times with different players. That's a pretty great career, just not, well you know. Joe Gibbs career seems better

Am I wrong in that of the other greats he reminds me most of Brady. Not a fast runner, quick release, felt the rush rather than scrambling, successful with all kinds of receivers.
Waaaaaaay more yayo.

That was the point where Sterling Sharpe really didn't know where this was going to go thus the outstretched strongarm. Meanwhile, Greg Gumbel is thinking, "This is going to make me famous. Suck it Bryant!"

When told about it, I wonder if Peyton felt insulted by the comparison

From an ESPN article.

Alex Bregman of the Astros:

"After watching the Patriots win and with the Red Sox beating us last year, there's no other city that I would like to beat more this year than Boston," he said recently on the "Going Deep with Chad and JT" podcast featuring Chad Kroeger and JT Parr.

He wanted to beat us last year, too. This little dude is annoying.

I can't imagine the amount of courage it must take for someone to predict that a 42 year old football player won't start his tenth super bowl. Leaps like these is how this country was founded. The Pilgrims ain't got shit on Rob Parker.

The look on Marino's face just frozen at the end is incredible. I'm sure they had words afterwards.
My second fave part of that vid - Gumbel at the end: "Meanwhile that New England offense put together scoring"....
and the fact that it is a 12 year old video that looks dated, and the beat rolls on...

Eventually we will go extinct and make way for another species or perish in glorious heat death.

You don’t get credit for predicting it 80,000 times only to be ‘right’ on the 80,000th.

The money quote from Parker: "You know he's not getting a seventh ring, stop it," said Parker on FS1's "Undisputed". "He was lucky to get a sixth ring. Tom Brady was along for the ride. Can I remind you about the Super Bowl? Tom Brady looked more like Peter Brady. He had no touchdowns, one interception, and one fumble ... he was so bad in that game they couldn't even give him MVP. They gave it to a wide receiver who didn't even have a touchdown in the game. All I'm saying is, thank god his defense gave him this Super Bowl, like it was a parting gift. ... Tom Brady looked all of 41 years old. He did not look like the guy who everybody thinks is gonna play until he's 50 and hes defeating Father Time."

There’s more salt here than in the Dead Sea.

I love everything about that quote.

Mind you, he was right for one pass - the interception. But most of the rest of the game, he was an assassin, made no mistakes and threw tight, accurate balls to the right guys at the right time (maybe excepting the 4th-and-1). That throw to a double-covered Gronk at the 5 that proved decisive, or the double-move throw to Gronk a few plays earlier where he had to float it just right, nevermind every throw to Edelman... he had incredible touch on at least 15-20 passes in that game if not more. Certainly way better than Goff, and nobody's telling him he's washed up.

God, what a peak, exemplary moron he is.

I am pretty close to declaring any mention of Rob Parker off-limits on BBtL, like relaying medical "insights" of David Chao.

Any objections?
I object. At least in this thread. I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned him so it’s not personal. But he’s part of the tears brigade. And noting his pain is glorious. Even if he is a total putz.

I particularly enjoyed his (I think it was before the KC game) prediction that they were going to lose and him saying, "and I'm finally going to be right!" This is the only way that people will pay attention to him, and he knows it.

The thing is, come next October, when the Pats are 2-2, 2-3 or whatever, that will go right back to the same shit they say every year. And hopefully, come January, we'll have a volume IV.

Brady was along for the ride and didn't even win MVP. The receiver won MVP, you know the guy who caught all those passes thrown by . . . wait a minute.

What a fucking buffoon.
