NBC Sports Boston parts ways with Evan Drellich, will no longer have dedicated Sox beat

NBC Sports Boston has parted ways with Evan Drellich, its Red Sox reporter for the past two seasons.

Drellich announced the news Tuesday morning on WEEI’s “Mut & Callahan” show, on which is he is an occasional third voice.

The timing of NBC Sports Boston’s decision is surprising given that Red Sox pitchers and catchers have their first spring training workout on Wednesday in Fort Myers.

Drellich was informed of the network’s decision upon returning from a recent vacation. He had been at NBC Sports Boston since March 2017, coming over from the Boston Herald. He has also covered baseball for MLB.com and the Houston Chronicle.

NBC Sports Boston intends to make a hire, but it is not a Red Sox-specific reporter. Former ESPN “SportsCenter” anchor Jorge Andres will join the regional network soon. Andres, who was with ESPN from November 2011 to November 2015, has most recently been with CBS Sports HQ, its online streaming sports network.

NBC Sports Boston is not expected to hire someone to cover the Red Sox with original beat reporting in the way Drellich and Sean McAdam before him did. Instead, the network is expected to depend more on aggregation of Red Sox news.

Hopefully he goes to the athletic. It’s also kind of shocking that NBC sports Boston isn’t going to have any dedicated Red Sox reporter.

It's a shame for Drellich, but it's not like they really have sports "news" on that channel. Just in the past 2 weeks I checked in the AM to see if they might cover the Pats' victory or parade, or the NBA trade deadline, and nothing. They have the C's games, and their evening panel shows and that seems to be enough for them

I'm pretty sure he worked mainly for their website, where their news content lives.

My first reaction to this was “what the hell is NBC Sports Boston?” Took me a minute to realize it’s the rebranded CSNE, and not Channel 10.

I’m surprised they had a Red Sox beat reporter in the first place. I don’t think I’ve every watched anything on NBCS Boston besides the Celtics.
