The worst, most boing Super Bowl narrative is getting lots of play today. Anything to diminish what they've done. As a side note, what a culture full of vacuous half-wits we've got now. Mouth breathers, who can't appreciate anything if isn't loud, shiny, and obvious. Frankly, I don't want every game to be 13-3. But to see one in this era is fascinating, and very compelling in it's own right. A defensive coaching and execution clinic, by both teams really. Again, in the context of this era of football, where the game, and how it's officiated, are so titled towards towards offense, last night was a thing of beauty.

Honestly, is that just trolling for the sake of trolling? Contrarian for the sake of contrarian? Because if you're supposed to be a football analyst, then saying something this spectacularly stupid should find you out of a job.
Don't know how much was Florio and how much Simms. But I do wish that Brady would one day just say that he has the highest respect for Phil Simms but that Chris Simms is a bum.

I’m currently in KC. The narrative here is that two inferior teams played last night. NO got screwed by the no call and KC got screwed by poorly conceived OT rules. Nobody won last night.

It’s highly entertaining

The Pats' running game was awesome during the postseason, make no mistake. And that's exactly how the team should be constructed at this point in Brady's career. But they put up 41 against a really good Chargers' team and 37 on the road in KC. They scored 91 points total (30.3 per game). Brady threw for 953 yards in three games (317.7 per game). He completed 68% of his passes.

In contrast, in Peyton's last ride with Denver, in three games he completed 55.4% of his passes and threw for 539 yards (179.7 per game), and Denver scored 23, 20, and 24 points, and 7 of those came on a defensive score. So the offense scored just 60 points total (20.0 per game).

So yeah, even though the Pats' running game and defense played great, it isn't anything remotely like what Denver did to carry Peyton. Like, not even close.
All anyone has to do is just watch the 4th quarter and overtime of the Kansas City game to know that the "Brady is Peyton in 2015" narrative is a total nonstarter.

The number of 3rd and longs that Brady converted was nothing short of incredible. All of them in super hi leverage situations.

Especially given that KC went 0-3 against the two teams in the Super Bowl. Denial's a hell of a drug.

Anyone who thinks that was boring needs to go watch the first 30 Super Bowls. Very few of them (maybe 4 or 5? Cowboys-Colts/Steelers-Cowboys I/Giants-Bills/49ers-Bengals II...maybe one other?) featured the go-ahead points being scored after the third quarter. This was easily in the top half of Super Bowls for entertainment value and competitiveness

FWIW - as a Dolphins fan, or as much as someone can be a “Dolphins fan” at this point...This is the first Patriots Super Bowl win where I didn’t really care.
I don’t even know how or why you’d even get worked up at this point, the Pats dominance has been so prolonged and thorough, one single Super Bowl win or lose isn’t going to change anything.
If anything, my major takeaway from yesterday, and what i’ve been most upset about is how awful Jared Goff looked. He’s what made that game unwatchable. And then add some baffling strategic decisions by McVay, and I’m more pissed about the Rams than the Patriots. Especially since Kamara would have caught like 16 zillion passes for 180 gaggillion yards against you guys, in a just world lol
It’s super obvious you didn’t care. Sure. Whatever you need to justify to yourself the crying yourself to sleep nightly.

Yeah if this game happened in the 1960s sportswriters would be using it today as an example of WHEN MEN WERE MEN AND FOOTBALL WAS MEN TOO.

Against my better judgement, I checked out Ratto's article on Deadspin on this very topic today and found it enlightening.

https://deadspin.com/bill-belichick-stands-athwart-the-future-1832326835
But mostly, this was Bill Belichick’s masterpiece, his Sistine Chapel with video capability. As the game’s pre-eminent historian, he has known more ways to win a game than most of us have learned to watch one, and with every trend in the sport going toward offensive pyrosptectaculars and playbooks powered by dilithium crystals, he decided to force-feed America a three-hour tutorial on Chuck Noll and Don Shula and George Allen and Bud Grant. It was the early 1970s, and you were there.

This is so true. I am convinced that 90% of the "boring" crowd is under 40. (And that Cowboys-Colts game sucked).

And for the older crowd, Goff missing (or waiting too long) on the pass that JMac broke up is sort of reminiscent of Earl Morrall totally missing a wide-open Jimmy Orr in SBIII and throwing an INT instead.

Chris Carlin on WFAN just said something similar: the Pats killed the Super Bowl for him. It's almost a given that the Pats will be there every year, so it's no longer a special game for him. He doesn't waste a second on pre game shows, he just turns the TV on at kickoff.

Isn't that the opposite of "killing" the Super Bowl? I haven't watched the pregame stuff for 20 years. Ignoring my wife (and before they moved out) kids for more than the 4 hours or so of gametime on a Sunday seems like a bit much.

"Killing" the game would be *only* watching the pregame show and then not watching the game.

Not an original thought - seems to me that one way the Chiefs could have avoided OT and its rigged rules would be to score in the first half of that game, no?

Here
I had a coworker Bills fan talk shit pregame (unprovoked) and then when the Rams kicked a fg (lol), so after the game around 10:20, I sent a text saying at least Bills fans can take solace in Bills legend Stefon Gilmore finally getting a ring. He wrote back he was going to bed and to chill with the texts because “I have a meeting at 7.” I brought flowers and wrote a note for him this morning.

I’m convinced it’s also a product of fantasy football. Don’t get me wrong, I love FF, but it’s changed the way people watch football (RedZone, Etc.). There was definitely a theme on FF Twitter (for lack of a better term) that “McVay blew the game” more than “Pats D was lights out”. Here is a good example:

It didn't result in a pick, but my thought after seeing the hesitation was this great ITP piece by @mascho (leading up to the game) that keyed on Goff's hesitation:

Yup. I think the NFL should be happy about how the game was played; this was a lot more interesting than just both teams running up and down the field with big plays (like the LA vs KC game). It involved a lot of great, tight coverage in the secondary and a lot of physical, but clean, hits. Outside of Chung there were no big injuries that derailed the game and no refereeing controversies. Executing on special teams and field position was extremely important. Maybe there could have been more scoring, but this was a very complete, modern game of football.

In my opinion, just thinking back, we eliminated him, even though he got yardages. We just have to not allow points to get on the board and give our offense more opportunities to score."

The thing that cracks me up is that, for the first time in 6 wins,Brady did not have to score at the end of the game to win, and the haters are talking about how the defence won it for him. It isn't like Bradshaw had a legendary defence or anything, or that Motana won two blowouts. When he beat Marino the story, at the time, was how much better the 49ers defence was than the Dolphins.

As for coaches, how did come an all time legend like Shula could only get to one Superbowl with Marino in a era when the AFC was so weak the Bills looked like a 15 seed in the NCAAs?

Well, that kinda was Auerbach's theory: let the opposing superstar get his 30-40, just keep the rest of his team from scoring.

I'm transplanted down here in Nashville. I'm hoping those Titans fans (and Deion Lewis) who got a little too excited about their Superbowl back in November, and forgot to beat Indy the next weekend, are crying their own tears.

Turned on the local sports radio this am for about thirty seconds:
"Edelman, Welker, and Amendola [not sure why he was listed - I mean, I do, but still...] are system receivers [who would suck anywhere else]."
"Maybe if we gave the Rams defense PEDs they could cover him."
"We really want to appreciate E.'s greatness, but we can't, because we can't be sure he's not on something right now etc etc etc."

I've said it before, but how you see the game depends on who you are rooting for.

Last year the Patriots defense sucked; or, if you're not us, The Eagles played great.

Most of America blamed the Seahawks play call instead of praising the Patriots, even though that was one of the most incredible defensive plays in football history and even though a Lynch run was probably not the best play call against that formation.

It's no surprise that all of America is annoyed with Sean McVay; I suppose I would be too if I were rooting for the Rams.
Thank God I never do.

This is a good thread for some salt and some tears: http://thesteelersfans.com/forums/threads/what-a-joke.21748/

I particularly loved all of the Steeler fans complaining about the Patriots cheating, and then subsequent posters saying that they NEED to hire a scrub to intentionally destroy Brady's knee.
I would think they would love an up to date example of tough hitting defensive football. Isn’t that what Tomlin says who they are and what they do?

“The Patriots buy Super Bowls”. Ha. The Rams spent money like Steinbrenner in the offseason.
That’s what you have to do when you are trying to buy fans To fill your new stadium. They have a bunch of big names like Suh and Fowler coming due. Goff’s going to want a new contract soon too. They have about $34 mill of space with 38 spots taken.

They hate us so much they might not even let us open the season next year.

According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune and long-time NFL reporter Ed Werder, the Patriots are likely going to be getting the boot from the 2019 opener in favor of two completely different teams. This isn't any conspiracy against the Patriots; the NFL is just thinking about doing something different because the league will be kicking off its 100th season in 2019.
Link goes on to say they might do Bears/Packers and have the Pats play Sunday night.

This was my favorite. Where’d he do his research? 4chan?

The way I feel right now, I wont be back to my full-time fandom until Roger Goodell is gone. To quote Joe Thomas, he's basically just Vince McMahon and the NFL is as scripted as the WWE. I've done a lot of research over the past couple of weeks to see whether or not I was just having sour grapes. Did you know that the NFL is legally allowed to fix games? From what I have read, it's true. Goodell's master, Bob Kraft, is on record praising Goodell's emphasis on story lines and exciting finishes. That tells you a lot right there. How could Goodell possibly do any of that if he's not fixing games? I now believe that Brady's suspension for deflategate was either part of the story line or cover to take the heat away from Goodell. The NFL is rigged and I am more convinced of that than ever. You'll never hear about it from the media because they are in on it. I don't know if I'll ever trust the NFL again. Goodelll leaving would be a start.

Whitlock: "Were you Super Bowl MVP?"
Jennings: "Give me 2 more Super Bowls!!"
