Meanwhile, in a column lambasting Snyder for nearly killing the 80 year relationship between the DC football team and its fanbase, Boz says "This team would claim Paul Manafort on waivers."

He's a national treasure.
Here’s a link to another column by a different Tom, which makes the same points in a different way and likewise would blister the paint off your car —

I can smell the burn from that one all the way up here. Yikes.

More than three years ago, at the NFL meetings, a group of spouses that included the wives of Snyder, Allen and Gruden took part in a community event aimed at assisting those directly affected by domestic violence.

“First and foremost, all of this affects all of the women that are here, which rolls into us as role models for our families, and then for our teams and our communities,” Tanya Snyder said of domestic violence. “So we are here because we’re inspired and we certainly want to do everything we can to give back and to make a difference.”

How can she look her husband in the eye after this?
One of the biggest problems with the reflexive negativity and cynicism of the Boston sports media is that they lose the credibility and moral standing to pull off being this savage, ever. Not that the local sports teams have given them too many causes to do so of late, but it's a stark difference.

Boston and Washington should trade sports media. The Wizards are providing Steve A. Smith with signature rants that will earn him entry into some hall of fame. The Nationals are as political as the Red Sox were under Harrington and Duquette. And for 20 years the Redskins have been prevaricators, poseurs and politicians — and good at none of it.

I wouldn’t have made the claim, but if you wanted to, there was only one way to do it. The guy who called the shot, Bruce Allen, should have announced the claim to the press and explained it honestly. *We had a first round grade on this guy and we wanted to jump the queue when the day comes that he can play again* Period. Instead, they send out a press release over the name of the director of personnel, whose name was misspelled. This iconic player in team history, Doug Williams, then lets it slip on his radio segment that the alleged misdeeds were “small potatoes”, undoubtedly reflecting the views of Bruce Allen. Then they lie about vetting this with the players, notably the Alabama players, who honestly said they were not consulted. “Above our pay grade.” They also expose their head coach to withering questioning days in advance of a crucial game.

CHB would flourish here, and wouldn’t have to work at it.

are you seriously proposing trading us the likes of Tom Boswell for the likes of CHB? That's like the Tatum-Fultz trade.
I’m saying the strengths of both are wasted where they are stationed. Boston has long deserved an elite wine critic like Boswell. Washington needs a wise ass reviewer of fast food joints.

Not sure if it's being talked about elsewhere, but the NFL has once again taken down the Annual Least Self-Aware Organization in America award.

Some might remember that on Thanksgiving Day, Ezekiel Elliott scored a touchdown and for his celebration, he took out $21 and dropped in the giant Salvation Army kettle that was in the end zone. A bunch of us joked in the game thread at the time that he would probably get fined for "using a prop."

Well, he did. $13,000 an change to be exact. Zeke responded to it today:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2018/12/06/nfl-fined-ezekiel-elliott-his-latest-salvation-army-celebration-hes-not-happy/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.fb064f2d59c0

The people that run the NFL need to be removed, and shot into outer space. They just don't seem to live in the same reality the rest of us do.

It's so easily avoided. $13k is chump change to the NFL.
They easily could have said.... We are fining him because the rules are the rules and we need to respect that. However, his actions were well intended during this holiday season so in addition to fining him $13K we will be making a $13K contribution to the Salvation Army.

That would have saved face, been logical and would not have been hard to do.

It's kind of amazing how both Benjamin's have never really panned out, no matter where they have played.
I didn't even know they were related. Kelvin has been a huge bust, but Travis I'd say has done alright for a fourth round, speed/return guy.

Ok mobile and suck at the internet but a lot of tweets and such talking about Alex Smith battling tons of infections and complications from his surgery. Has had several surgeries since. His career may be in jeopardy.

They aren't related.
So I didn't think they were, but the way your post was worded I thought you were implying they were. Then when I was glimpsing at their stats I noticed they were both from Belle Grade, Florida. Weird.

It is a weird story, they are from a small town, they aren't related, but they have the same last name and the ability to drop a lot of passes.

Sounds pretty ominous. Stuff like this is exactly why Le'Veon is doing what he's doing. Good thing for Smith is that he had $50M+ of his salary guaranteed.

Vikings OC John DeFilippo canned after his offense crapped out last night against the Seahawks.
One of the more deserving firings this year, IMO. The man just does not understand how to use a running game. The Vikings have the 3rd most passing attempts, and 2nd least rushing attempts in the NFL. And it's not like they were terrible running the ball. They averaged 4.1ypc, which is low, but it's brought down by the fact that Kirk Cousins has 15% of their rushing attempts and he's averaging 2.9ypc. Obviously, with Diggs and Theilen, they should primarily be throwing the ball, but 274 rushing attempts vs. 524 passing attempts is ludicrously unbalanced.

And here's the other problem with their running game:

Lavtavius Murray - 114 carries
Dalvin Cook - 87 carries

That’s a bit disingenuous. Cook has been hurt most of the season. Still not getting enough carries but there’s a legit reason for the discrepancy between the two.

Guice also required 3 additional procedures for infection after his ACL surgery. Something in the water in DC?

Roto world blurb:
Derrius Guice - RB - Redskins
An infection in Derrius Guice's torn ACL required three additional knee surgeries and brings his 2019 availability into question.

Guice tore his ACL last preseason and should've made a smooth recovery, but the infection severely complicated his rehab. The infection lasted two months after Guice's ACL tear, "prompting seven weeks of heavy rounds of antibiotics through a catheter in his arm." Guice admitted there is "no specific timeline" for his return. This is especially unfortunate news after Alex Smith's complicated broken-leg surgery put Smith's NFL future into doubt

Damn. Sounds like a Stephen King novel. Disrespect for indigenous people leads to mystery ailments and suffering.

This is a nice thread..
Generally the takeaway is... The Vikings run game is trash and they should actually throw more early in games and in close games.

I don't know who Warren Sharp is, but I'm glad a bunch of folks came in there to beat him down. I mean, when I read this:

Against SEA last night, Cousins had a 100% success rate in the first half when passing to WRs or TEs on early downs. Yet Zim wanted to be run heavy so that's what the OC called.
On early downs in the 1H: •
9 RB runs: 33% success, 4.3 YPC •
3 WR/TE passes: 100% success, 10.3 YPA

It makes my head spin. 3 passes? And he's touting that as a 100% success rate, as if it has any predictive value? What?
The entire thread is based on the premise that because they are 1-5 in games in which they go run heavy in the 1st quarter, it means they should run less? He doesn't even mention the 5 losses were against New Orleans, New England, Rams, Bears and Seattle? Umm yea, you're probably going to lose to good teams when you're not that good. If he wants to blame those losses on running the ball 45% of the time on early downs in the 1st quarter, so be it, but I don't see the causation there. The Vikings were running all over the Patriots early in the game, and they just stopped running. I talked about in the game thread at the time. The Pats defense was basically giving them the run, and not allowing them to beat the defense with Diggs and Thielen, but Flip has no patience, and he's incapable of sticking with the run, even if it's working.

I will grant that their offensive line had some issues this year, and Latavius Murray is not a good back (I refer to him as LeGarrette Blount 2.0, Mr. Minimum), but Dalvin Cook is electrifying and he's been healthy for a few weeks now. They need to work him into the offense, and yet, almost every time it's an obvious running down like third and short or goal line, here comes Murray, waddling in from the sideline, so he can get stuffed by the first defender that gets through. That's why they struggle on obvious running downs, because they're using the wrong guy, or when they use the right guy, they try to run out of shotgun or call a slow developing stretch run to the outside that takes too long in short yardage situations.

Anyway, I've watched a ton of Vikings football this year. I'm very, very curious to see how this change affects their approach going forward.

So, 2 drives in today after firing their OC.

Dalvin Cook has 5 carries for 61 yards and his first rushing td of the year, plus 1 catch for 27 yards. They've marched down the field twice, and lead Miami 14-0.

Like I said, one of the more deserving firings of the year. If it happened sooner, the Vikings might actually have a shot at the playoffs.
