Just got the bluray for this movie in the mail. Unfortunately, it looks like a departure from previous championship dvds/blurays. For '04, '07, and '13 about half the time was spent on the ebbs and flows of the season, from the offseason through spring training, big games during the year, etc. Then a decent chunk of time was spent on the first two rounds of the playoffs.

In this case, they basically spent one minute on the story of Alex Cora's office pictures. Then straight WS Game 1. Not a single word about the Yankees or Astros series.

The bonus features have some scattered highlights and a 4 minute "how they got there" segment taken from the MLB Network that very quickly covers the whole season.

Extremely disappointing. The WS was great, but there was so much more to the season they just completely ignored.

Is this the NESN release?

Faith Rewarded was always a great one.

Even though the ending was a bummer, I always loved Still, We Believe.

The official MLB movie is usually just the WS, isn't it? I seem to recall other productions that had more of the season. But I certainly haven't bought them all, so I could be off.

(I still wish they shot the MLB WS movie with film like they did up through the 70s, rather than using lots of TV video intercut with interviews.)

"Still, We Believe" wasn't the nesn release for that year, was it? I thought that was the independent one that set out to make fun of how Sox fans are hopeless only to have it ruined by winning the WS. Maybe I'm getting them mixed up. But I agree in general that the NESN dvd's are the only ones worth getting. The World Series DVD's are always World Series-centric and lack soul.

Edit: Yeah, I think it might be "Cowboy Up" that you're thinking of. Despite the ending, that was one of the best ones ever.

Edit 2: Oh, hey, lookie there, it's up on youtube:

Edit 3: This is totally gonna refresh my Jack Mckeon and Gump hate.

Isn’t that SOP for the MLB created one?

For 2013 there was the MLB film and the NESN (band of bearded brothers) film.

I believe nesn was more in-depth on the regular season.

No, Still We Believe. It was following a handful of Sox fans through the 2003 season. It’s just so in-depth on a season that was one of my favorites (until the end of course).

Cowboy Up was the NESN 2004 release, yeah. I have the DVD somewhere. Which year was Faith Rewarded? 2007?

Edit:

Wait Faith Rewarded was 2004 from NESN.

Cowboy Up was 2003.

Faith Rewarded was 2004. Cowboy Up was 2003. Even though they didn't win, they did the DVD anyway.

I remember Still We Believe as being pretty depressing throughout, personally. But it's been a while. 99% that wasn't NESN, though.

It wasn’t. I didn’t mean to imply it was, that was a non sequiter.

It was hella depressing, but after 2004 it became a great relic of a time and place that doesn’t exist anymore.

Ahh, I misread. :)

I'm just glad I found a reason to remember Cowboy Up. It's about the most positive Red Sox thing from before 2004. That 2003 was a really special, memorable season.

Yep. I was only 18 but remember that season incredibly clearly still. Technology had caught up and Gameday was becoming a viable way to follow baseball.

Does anyone remember the old redsox.com that had text updates every 5-10 mins? That was so next level back then.

I remember watching gameday when Trot has his big game against the Phillies and was so impressed how quickly I could follow the game.

Edit:

Sorry y’all I’m in too deep. Here’s the old Red Sox site. A snapshot from 1997.

Chad says no NESN DVD this year.
December 2018 has been a major disappointment.

Christmas at Fenway on Hanukkah, axed
NESN DVD, axed
Ticket prices for following year, increased
2 Fenway Yankees games axed (well, earlier) and moved to England, with high prices and 5AM presale

I’m honestly shocked. It’s an easy moneymaker for NESN.

The previous MLB videos spent a chunk of time on the rest of the season and playoffs in the past. 2004 had about 30 minutes of season + playoffs, 2007 had about 15-20 minutes. Don't have 2013 handy to check, but I know they spent some time on the season and playoffs as well.

This movie is into the World Series in about 1 minute. There's just so many other fun parts of the season to remember, it stinks that not a single one of them even gets a mention here, doubly so with no NESN version to fall back to.

Do we think MLB productions or MLBAM put the kibosh on the NESN version at this stage in time? I agree with all above - the Series was cool but there is so much more to the story.

FWIW I rewatched 2013 recently and it really took some time to cover the Marathon tragedy, the Tigers series, etc. Didn't jump right to the Series, that's for sure.

Just got back from this. Didn't even see the thread ahead of time. It was... eh, I wouldn't run out and buy it. Think 15 minute clip shows for each game with really not much new footage. Almost nothing outside ot the World Series is covered, which seems to be the norm with these films. Some good commentary from Cora, Sale, and Pearce. Otherwise, I have a feeling some folks on here could do a better job than MLB in putting together a movie just with the clips found online.

Sort of a shame how MLB Productions is nowhere near NFL Films.

This is one thing the NFL does right. Every team (I think, still) has an NFL Films-made highlight movie. Even the shitty ones would have a title like "the browns: marching toward the future" with some not John Facenda somehow making losing every game look and sound dramatic and hopeful.

As much as the 2003 season ending still makes me sick, I greatly enjoyed "Still We Believe" because, as a Red Sox fan, and someone who runs his / their summer lives around Red Sox games, I could identify with most of the individuals in that presentation.

Which made it good - for me, and probably other Red Sox fans. Non-Red Sox fans might not find it interesting.

I don't remember much about it, to be honest. I remember enjoying it at the time, when I was in the pre-2003 to post 2004 era mindset. I still to this day use that "D-E-D, dead" line, too, lol.

But, I just remember looking back on it and seeing how the makers of the film were trying to really show how much of hopeless losers Sox fans are, and that the Sox winning the Series kind of ruined that whole angle. That could be a bit revisionist on my part, though.

I don’t think this is true. I’m pretty sure it set out to luck into capturing the year they won it all. But it ended up being the last season before they broke the curse so it’s kind of an interesting time capsule.

I just watched the DVD and in the bonus section they had a special moments feature. It had Mookies 3 home run game, Pearce's 3hr game, Sales 12k one hitter, etc.

It was on FS1 Sunday afternoon at 3. Although I would have had a nicer Sunday afternoon if I watched it then, I watched it last night. It was good. I was wrong about production quality. MLB obviously had independent camera work. I cant hear Charley Steiner's voice without thinking of him holding the lantern and shouting "follow me to freedom!"

Added bonus......during Eovaldi's first interview, my wife looked up and asked why they were interviewing Jake Gyllenhall.
