We traded minor league second baseman Esteban Quiroz to the Padres for reliever Colton Brewer:

Brewer is a 26-year-old 6'4" righty reliever who pitched a few ineffective innings for SD last year, but was solid in the hitter-happy PCL. He has 2 options left, so expect him to ride the Pawtucket shuttle this year and next.

Quiroz was old for AA but looks like he has the potential to be a solid hitter for a middle infielder at some point.

We picked up Quiroz for nothing out of the Mexican league when we needed more 2B depth options with Pedroia out. He hit well in the minors until he got hurt, and picked it back up in the AFL: he looks like a useful player. But with Pedroia's impending return moving him pretty far down our depth chart, we've cashed him in for a need — a viable middle reliever with options remaining — and San Diego gets to see if Quiroz can actually hit as well as his early Stateside returns suggest.

That's good GMing right there. Dombrowski is doing work.

For the record, Brewer was signed by the Padres as a minor league FA (after NY let him go) literally one day before BOS signed Quiroz, both in late Nov 2017, so I don't know if either team should really be credited with 'good GMing' here.

He has really upper echelon spin rate numbers. The list of MPH cutters speaks to itself.

Really interested in seeing what the Red Sox can do with him.

Quiroz is a guy I thought was a real sleeper. If he hadn't gotten hurt, I think he would have been in the majors at some point in 2018, and I was looking forward to him making a bid in 2019.

I hope Brewer is good, and it sounds like he's a worthwhile gamble. But I think this

But with Pedroia's impending return
is wildly optimistic. If you're the Sox, I don't think you can make any plans that include Pedroia playing. Obviously with Holt, Nunez and Lin, they think they should be covered, and I would love to see Pedroia back, but I don't know if it will happen.
