It's a mark against Burke, Gase, the whole coaching staff and at least some players (who are the "leaders" among them? Or rather, where are they?). It's even more disappointing/frustrating than this stretch of injury hell. Despite a near-miraculous 5 - 4 record (thank you, Albert Wilson, and special teams unit!), Gase seems to be on the precipice of losing this team. For the first time (when taking the injury situation into consideration), I'm feeling like anything short of qualifying for the playoffs should put Gase's job in jeopardy. And this team, as it is currently functioning, is not qualifying for the playoffs.
I actually think that Gase responded to it correctly today. He spoke with Reshad directly and found out there was an issue. He largely defended Jones and said he was going to be more involved with the defense. I’m sure there are a lot of players in the locker room that agreed with those actions today.

My takeaway is Burke is on thin ice. There are other issues that don’t look great, however, I would say that Gase has handled this particular incident about as well as possible.

That it got to that point, though, is what concerns me.

Agreed. I think part of that is Gase maybe trusting Burke too much to handle the defense. He has largely focused on the offense for obvious reasons.

Gase is probably learning that he needs to focus more on both sides of the ball, maybe giving a little more responsibility to Dowell Loggains to coordinate the offense so that Gase can oversee things a bit more.

Also, another reason LA works well is they have McVay to coach and oversee the offense and Phillips is about as sure a bet on defense as there is. Gase started with Vance Joseph, but Burke has looked like he’s been in over his head the last two years. I hope they consider making a change if things don’t dramatically improve.

Welp, I had low expectations going in to this game. With James, Tunsil and Larsen our, I mean wtf.

Jakeem Grant looks like he might be down for the rest of the year. Parker hurt again. Branch hurt.

We’ll see what happens over they bye week. Tannehill is going to try and get back for the game vs Indy. I personally think he’s going to be out for the season. The labrum tear can heal with rest, but it won’t heal in time for Indy or the rest of the season IMO.

Do we officially get to blame this lost season on injuries yet? I mean sure, coaching has been questionable at times, and good teams embrace and thrive on "next man up," but what the Dolphins have endured this year is fucking absurd.

I thought there was no way it could get worse than last year. This year is neck and neck with last year.

Adam Beasley exported that there is optimism that Grant may not have ruptured his Achilles. Still might be done for the year, but possibly avoided a catastrophic injury.

I’ll give Miami credit. They should not be a .500 team. This team has been held together with duct tape and glue and is ready to burst at any moment, but they keep fighting. That speaks to Adam Gase. One year he’s going to have his starting QB the entire season, and gave even average injury luck, and Miami will be good.

I have to think Steve Ross knows this. I would expect Gase remains Miami’s coach, but I’m hoping Ross demands action regarding the QB position.

Ryan Tannehill will start for Miami against Indy on Sunday.

Say what you want about Tannehill, but the offense clearly operated at a lower gear while he was out. Osweiler missed several shot plays that were easy TDS that a Tannehill has become adept at hitting. Brock also seemed to regress each week.

Miami is still very much in the crowded 5-5 hunt for a wild card spot, and Indy is lumped in that group. Will be interesting to see Tannehill run the offense with the new, restricted skill group and see if the defense cleans up the glaring issues coming off the bye.

The loss of Wilson, Grant, and Stills for a time, combined with the disappearance of Kenyan Drake factored significantly into this, no? Anyway, the Dolphins will struggle with Luck, who is on fire, and unless Miami brought in a miracle healer during the bye, they are still thin at multiple positions. I'd be close to shocked if Indy didn't put us all out of our misery on Sunday.

This is partly true, but Osweiler has missed some wide open homeruns while Tannehill was out. The entire oline was essentially missing vs GB, so I don’t think we can glean too much from that, but Brock was essentially backup QB level.

They appear to be recovering some. Tunsil and James should return. Parker should play. Tannehill will play. Charles Harris should play. They’re still missing Wilson, Grant, and others, but the bye came at a good time for them.

We’re on to 2019.

Up 10 in the 4th quarter Miami goes 3 and out in their final two possessions and essentially punted the season away when they kicked it to Indy with 4 minutes to go and 2 timeouts.

The play call on third down was inexcusable for Miami. Running it on third and ten backed up against your own goal and then punting is the epitome of the Dolphins the last 10 years or so.

If Tannenbaum and the Front Office aren’t going to be included in that as well, then you mine as well keep Tannehill and Gase.
I can’t take any more half measures.
This franchise has never actually had a true reset this past decade, because somehow, someway, somebody becomes Ross’ Wormtail and inexplicably stays on unscathed while everyone else is being thrown under the bus.
Not really a defense for those guys, but if they are going to make major changes it better be across the board.

Agreed. Tannenbaum is a joke.

Thing is, I’m not sure is gase is good or bad. He clearly has zero confidence in tannehill (nor should he) yet has to support him publicly.

If you’re Ross, with an unlimited checkbook, who do you hire to run the organization?

“Consistency”

Gase values Gore’s ability to consistently churn out 4-5 yards and keep the chains manageable. Anyone with eyeballs can tell you Drake is the more dynamic, explosive option, but he at times will try and bounce runs for no gain instead of taking the 3-4 yards he should.

Gase has consistently and repeatedly taken the ball out of Tannehill’s hands on third and longs, opting to run the ball. It’s worked maybe twice this season. Miami has one of, if not the worst, third down offenses in the league.

Gase will say that it’s first and second down failures that set up a low percentage third down situation, but teams convert third and longs. It actually happens. When you opt to run it, you’re making a low percentage play even lower.

If Gase can’t trust Tannehill to execute on third down, then there isn’t a reason for him to be on the roster. Guys like Wilson and Grant, and yesterday Amendola, being out certainly hurts. Those guys can create separation and win 1 on 1 man co wage situations. Colts were blitzing and Miami’s receivers weren’t winning their individual battles.

At this point it’s obvious Tannehill isn’t the long term answer. My only question is does Miami go all in 2019 or 2020 for a QB?

Edit; just to add to the desolate QB situation, if Miami cuts Tannehill, he’s probably the best free agent available and walks into a starting job with Jacksonville or Tampa pretty much immediately.

The best case scenario IMO for 2019 would be keeping Tannehill and drafting a guy like Haskins in the first and letting him simmer for a year like Mahomes.

A lot of disappointing things with this team at the moment, and for me one of the biggest frustrations is that this team still doesn’t have a Tight End.
And I say this is one of the biggest, because unlike many of the other issues, this one can’t be traced back to injuries or bad luck. Plus they used two relatively high picks this past draft in an attempt to resolve the issue.
If you add Ballage to that, the team took 3 offensive players in the first 4 rounds and not one of them has seen the end zone. I’m not counting these guys out forever just 10 games into their career, but I do think it’s fair to point out that they’ve gotten shit production from spots where you expect/need to get meaningful production sooner than later if you’re a team with as many holes as the Dolphins had coming into this season.

Yea I’m willing to give the TEs a pass this season. TE is a notoriously difficult position for rookies to transition to. Gesicki obviously has his limitations blocking. I think the combination of Gray going down and the offensive line breaking down has forced them to use the TEs as blockers more than they had originally anticipated.

I do think that Nick O’Leary is a genuine find for them and I would expect them to bring him back next season.

I’m not sure what to make of Ballage one way of the other. Gase clearly favors Frank Gore’s reliability to the detriment of Drake and, to an extent, Ballage. It smells like the rookie treatment of Ballage not being good enough at pass protection to see the field with any consistency.

I understand that it could take Gesicki a while to develop, but I think (and I think the team would agree if you have them some truth serum) the expectation was that he was an athletic playmaker that would contribute in the Red Zone/3rd down as he works toward becoming a complete player. That was certainly the impression I had and it seemed t be echoed by most everyone surrounding the team. Maybe I just haven’t watched enough of this years team, but I haven’t even see flashes which is why I’ve been disappointed.

And yeah, I guess I shouldn’t have said all the TE’s because I’ve liked O’leary Since his days at FSU (well didn’t like him, because I hate FSU, but respected his game) and he has played well.

A win is a win is a win.

It felt like Allen ran for 300 yards against Miami. Kiko embarrassed himself a few times trying to spy him. Allen is definitely a slippery dude and that TD pass he made where Cam Wake blasted him was genuinely impressive.

Offense was meh. Struggled for most of the game. Tannehill made two great throws for TDs to both Parker and Stills. He was under siege most of the game. Ted Larsen is trash. Jesse Davis is younger trash.

Xavien Howard is a bonafide star. The dude leads the league in INTs and this was his third game this year with 2 picks. He and Minkah are great young players for Miami’s D to build around.

shocking that the o-line again sucks and they cannot protect the passer. injuries, whatever. it always sucks. they can't evaluate talent on the line or cannot coach it, one or both of these is true.

the team was outgained 450 - 175?

Well to be fair, Josh Sitton was supposed to be the left guard and Dan Kilgore was supposed to be the center. Swanson was the center the last few weeks, but he got injured, so Jake Brendel, who had been at LG the last few weeks, was at center and Larsen was back in the lineup.

All of that is a long winded way of saying the O Line has been hit hard by injuries. Hopefully Swanson can go this week, because Larsen is awful.

NE has been more of a run heavy team this year than any in recent memory. Miami is bad at defending the run. My guess is we see NE try and pound it out more than the spread everyone out that we’ve grown accustomed to.

On offense, Miami has to protect better. I’m sure NE is going to bring pressure and different looks to try and exploit Miami’s OLine. Get Drake the ball out of the backfield and let him make plays against NE’s LBs.

Just a few game thoughts:

- Love Stills, but the, "I can't throw the ball to myself," type comments won't fly today. His decision to give himself up shy of the 1st-down marker, QB style, was a soft football play at a crucial juncture in the game. His drop on the next series on and 3rd and change was just as big.

- Obviously, missing Howard today was huge. That PI call on Minkah to all but end the game wasn't incorrect call, but it was a tough one to take. Those usually get ignored, especially late in the 4th in the game.

- Say what you want about Tannehill, but he's really tough. And the physical tools are still impressive. If his career profile ends up reading, "Just a Guy," it'll be due to a mix of bad luck, injury, and never quite developing an above average football IQ.

And as I type this, the Dolphins pull off the miracle. The curse of the "in Miami game" continues for New England!

Weird game. Tom taking the sack at the end of the 1st Half was helpful, but he otherwise played incredibly well. Gostkowski's missed kicks and Belichick's decision to kick for 3 at the end likely deserve most of the criticism. It was also strange to see Gronk on the field on that final play. There was no way Tannehill was reaching pay-dirt for a jump ball. There has to be at least a dozen other NE players you'd trust more to make an open-field tackle to save a TD in that situation.

Ah. I actually enjoy them and think they’re generally the best analysis on a weekly basis.
They’re fantastic and it gives another angle to him when most outside fans only see him as a curmudgeon. The man breathes football, ask the right question and you’ll get a fifteen minute lesson of the I formation (or whatever). Ask a dumb one and expect to be blown off.

I mean, what can you say? Probably the grittiest win of Tannehill's career when you factor in his injuries.

As Dolphins fans celebrate, I know Pats fans can (rightfully) point out the irrelevance of Miami for the last 20 years and the ultimate irrelevance of this game, but whatever. I'm gonna savor it. Call it pathetic if you wish, but this is our Super Bowl.** There are also the nice consolations that 1) Hard Rock Stadium in New England's head has become a real thing and 2) Miami gets to keep playing meaningful games in December.

**I think this kind of sheds light on @sodenj going off the deep end in the game thread. Obviously he deserves the suspension, but there is a LOT pent up within us Dolphins fans.

Being a Miami fan in New England has been tough over the last 15+ years, but I thoroughly enjoy following BB's pressers and interviews. It's about the only reason I tune into WEEI. Knowing how special of a HC he is, I was shocked to see ANY Patriot fan side with Brady over BB in the "off-season fiasco". To me, another 10+ years of Bill over a handful more from Tom is a complete no-brainer.

Two punt blocks by NE today. When's the last time Rizzi was owned like that?

Shoot, I'd almost forgotten about those. And that led to those bizarre running kicks by Haack. Fascinating game. How about the 3 TDs for the Dolphins by guys who came into the game with 5 touches, combined?

I tread lightly in Patriots threads for a few reasons:

1) Know your environment. If you're going to cheer on the Dolphins in a Patriots' bar, you have to be smart about it. As Mos Def might say, don't profile and front.
2) The SoSH mods have been terrific in keeping the trolling to a minimum in this thread. Returning the favor is the decent thing to do.
3) Any little joy you may have getting in a jab just isn't worth the inevitable gang response.

THAT SAID, the game thread always seemed to be the one spot that was "fair game," as the rules for quality posting in those type of threads tend to be a bit looser. If you have fans from both teams participating, there's bound to be a little trash talking.

I loved the formation creativity in the 1st Half and have always felt as though Bolden was a little underrated as a ball carrier. You have to feel good for a guy who takes advantage of an opportunity to essentially tell a former employer, "Hey, you made a mistake letting me go."

Totally agree. As have most of the non Dolphin-fan posters. Like I mentioned, I understand the sheer release of emotion, but sodenj knows better. I mean, "Suck it Patriots fans!" kind of goes without saying, doesn't it? ;)

Yet another thing that stood out to me from this game was Gase persistently (stubbornly?) sticking with Gore as the feature back. He was rewarded today as Gore looked great and Drake played his role to perfection.

You know who isn't getting enough credit for this victory? Minkah Fitzpatrick. If he doesn't reach into Gordon on the play he was called for DPI (on a soft call, personally), that's all but assuredly a touchdown, which puts New England up 8, probably 9 given the extra point, making the remaining seconds an even more probable formality. Better to give up the yards than the six, right?

Congrats on the persistence, a Hollywood ending, and a great game to the Dolphins fans here. Best of luck the rest of the way.

Thank you, and great point. At best, he gets away with it. (And that usually happens on a play like that with minutes to go in a 1 possession game.) At worst, you extend the game, because as you mentioned, that was going to be a TD. Overall, though, Minkah did seem to struggle in this one more so than any other game. NE receivers looked to get quite a bit of separation 1:1 with him.

Enjoy watching the playoffs.

It's fair to say the Mods on this board have let Sodjen get away with trolling for a full decade. And then KFP says one thing, 1/10th as obnoxious as what occurred in the game thread, and he gets a warning. And Sodjen only gets a suspension when he should absolutely be out of here, because it wasn't just today,(which was egregious, but not out of character) it's been a FULL decade.

Something is wrong with that. Everyone should be treated the same and just because Sodjen roots for a team that hasn't won a playoff game since the Clinton administration and has made the playoffs only twice in the past 17 years doesn't mean he should be treated differently.

I don't know about a pattern since I rarely venture outside of this thread for football-related matters, but I agree that that was way out of line. I just think let the mods mod.

Would this be a good time to remind folks that at the end of the day and most importantly, we're ALL Red Sox fans here. Therefore, I love you all despite your glaring flaw of being Patriots fans.

As a lifelong Phin fan, (and I am old as dirt), this has to be the worst 7-6 team in memory. We are -55 for the season, yet lurking in the playoff race. Weird, injury-wracked season for the Phins.
