I realize this could go in the media forum, but given the related video games land here I figured we're in our own little world.

I wanted to give my personal snapshot of the current state of soccer broadcasting in the States. It's come a long way from watching VHS tapes in the 80's to having a virtual nonstop barrage of matches from an amazing array of leagues every in-season weekend. We're spoiled rotten and I love it. I'd appreciate any tidbits of knowledge or opinions of those who share the passion for the game.

I'll also preface by mentioning I have the absolutely awful Frontier Communications providing my television service. Frontier bought AT&T Uverse in my area, which had been doing very well by comparison.

NBC Sports- This is the gold standard, in my opinion. The Premier League coverage has been absolutely second to none since NBC took over a few years ago. Native broadcasters cover every match every weekend. As many matches as possible are broadcast live and everything is available through their NBC Sports Live Extra app. The picture quality is on par with ESPN.

In-game commentary is covered by UK-based teams. Play-by-play is generally excellent. The color commentary can be hit or miss but is generally less objectionable than most.

The studio shows are rather vanilla but seem to be modeled off the England-based counterparts. The additional content is fairly excellent (Premier League Download, Goal Zone). Men in Blazers lives here. It's a watered-down quickie version of their podcast but can be a welcome addition.

The app is the best in the business. It's not far off MLB At Bat. Realtime data is available for the match you're watching with simple access to replays or other major events. Stats are updated. Live scores are available or can be hidden to avoid spoilers. Tactical cameras with ambient crowd noise are available for the headlining matches and they're a neat treat.

ESPN- In game presentation is where it really counts and ESPN still does very well. They have some good names in commentary, but also some significant duds.

They've done fantastic work in bringing nice analysis to the Euro studio shows. The rotation of big names with thoughtful commentary has been a nice touch. The ESPN FC broadcast has been similarly good, at least during the tournament. It's been rather bland otherwise.

The WatchESPN app is competent. It doesn't seem to work with Chrome right now. It doesn't have any additional content outside of the broadcast itself and it's significantly (minutes) behind the live telecast.

Fox Sports- Fox is an unmitigated disaster. Good news- they have the World Cup!

They bury games on obscure channels (one area where Frontier shines, coincidentally). The picture quality can range from passable to "1990's RealMedia" with compression blocks measuring inches wide on a decently sized television.

The commentary teams range from borderline to simply unlistenable. With the Gus Johnson experiment officially dead they've done little to reinforce their stable. Alexi Lalas should never be in a booth doing color commentary.

The studio shows are a rehash of their NFL pre- and postgame broadcasts with groups of folks yelling at each other and arguing inane and often irrelevant minutia.

I haven't used the streaming app.

beIN- These guys have quietly put together some nice content. As a Serie A fan it's nice to get at least a couple of games per week. Their 90 in 30 broadcast is a nice extended highlights show. There really aren't any significant pre- or postgame shows to speak of. You'll also always know when the next El Clasico is on, even if it's hundreds of days away.

Quality through Frontier is slightly above or at Fox's level, unfortunately. Frontier doesn't pay beIN for the rights to use their streaming app so, again, I can't comment on it.

The elephant in the beIN room is Ray Hudson. He gets all of their big games and he has no business in a broadcast booth. The character he plays is clearly more important to beIN than the game he's broadcasting. It's odd because his other work (podcasts, studio guest appearances, etc) really isn't bad and can be insightful.

Others- I don't have access to GolTV. I haven't tried Univision, mainly because the "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOL" call is fingernails on a chalkboard to me. What else am I missing?

Weird about Chrome, I use it for WatchESPN, because oddly on my home laptop Firefox comes up miniaturized. YMMV

One thing I've enjoyed with Univision is the graphics on replays. They highlight players and show their movement by moving them around while the video itself is still, much like with NBA or NFL. They do the same on free kicks. Of course, knowing a little Spanish goes a long way. You also get the dulcet baritone of Enrique Bermudez for a few matches. I'm going to probably watch more matches this season because I really want to see William Yarbrough who plays goal for Lèon.

beIn apparently has 1-2 Championship matches per season. I wonder if they have 90 in 30 for that, since I'll probably be watching Newcastle. I have SlingTV with the sports package, which includes beIN but also does not include the beIN Sports app. I don't think I've ever watched anything on beIN but at least it sounds better than Fox.

Great points all around. I agree with basically everything here except for the coverage on FS1 which belongs to Fox. I actually like it. First, they have the Bundesliga, which is fun to watch and loaded with Yanks. Plus I like that they don't dull sound of the crowd. You get a better sense of the environment in the stadium, which I love. Otherwise though, yeah Fox sucks.

BeIN has a championship game of the week, but will sometimes pick up a midweek match too.

First two televised are Villa at Wednesday then Wednesday at Norwich.

Yeah, I found out Gol TV still existed the hard way, when I tried to watch the Coppa Italia final. Surprisingly, Fios offers it, but not in HD and not in my package.

NBC is obviously the gold standard. Now, they have some advantages because all the games are produced in English already, but they deserve a lot of credit for making sure they are all available to anyone with a cable subscription. The games NBC produces are very good too and Arlo White has grown on me a lot. I miss him on MLS games. They have very few American voices, but they have no American soccer rights, so I can look past that.

ESPN is a close second. Their coverage for big tournaments is second to none, as evidenced by Euro 2016. Taylor Twellman is probably the best American color commentary voice at the moment. He and Adrian Healy do a great job on Soccer Sunday. ESPN FC is one of the few highlight shows that acknowledge MLS and Liga MX exist.

Fox Sports hired Alexi Lalas who seemingly only exists to agitate the viewing audience. I'll give them partial credit for abandoning the Johnson experiment and just piping in the British abnouncers for Champions League and the FA Cup. Like NBC with the EPL, Fox does a good job in getting all Champions League games on the Internet or television. Strong and Keller have grown on me for Soccer Sunday. I don't watch much German soccer, so I can't comment on their Bundesliga coverage.

BeIn isn't in the same league as the rest. They are calling games off monitors and often times there is no color commentary. There is just one channel for three major leagues, so if you like Atalanta, you'd better hope they're playing Juventus and Real Madrid and Barcelona have a late kickoff. I like the dude who seemingly calls every Serie A game by himself. He needs a raise.

Copa Libertadores is on Fox Sports 2 for the first time right now. Nobody gets FS2, but at least it's moving closer to an English-language format that is more widely available.

DirecTV has FS2 in HD.

I've been thinking of getting Fubo.tv. $10/month for BeIn, GolTV, and Univision Deportes would cover Spain, Italy, France, Brazil, and Portugal. I think I'd have to buy both the sports pack and the Spanish sports pack on DirecTV to get the same thing. Anyone try it?

You must hate fun. Something that only occurs once or twice a game and you want, what, Casey Keller to continue his story about his toe fungus? Give me the over the top exuberance any day of the week.

With that said, Univision is the gold standard. Their coverage of Liga MX and major international tournaments is vastly superior to anything else available. NBC may be the best coverage in English but it's still inferior to Univision.

Yeah, I don't understand much Spanish but it doesn't matter when I'm watching Univision. Infinitely better than the understatement competition that is NBCSN's broadcasts.

Give me the fun, please.

Another vote for Univision here. Their style is more fun and energizes the game.

They've been trying to crossover the style into English on the SAP feed that they use for their new MLS deal, but the guy they hired is so bad that it's hard to tell if the style doesn't work as well in English or if it's just Ramses Sandoval's suckage.

I think this is Jorge Perez-Navarro:

Funny you point those two announcers out. Perez-Navarro is by far my least favorite Univision guy and I've never really liked Andres Cantor. Perez-Navarro's use of every single name every player possesses and the shitty nicknames he sometimes uses is irritating. His style is otherwise harmless and I love his "MAMITA QUERIDA" call but I just can't get past the name thing. It's the voice with Cantor. Its pitch and nasal quality just don't sound good to me.

Wait, I don't like fun because I don't enjoy that?

Okay, guys.
I'll take responsibility for the "anti-fun" thing. I made that comment tongue firmly planted in cheek. Come on, no one wants to hear about Casey Keller's toe fungus.

I won't apologize for the rest of the post, though. You're dead wrong with your statement about NBC being the gold standard - style preferences be damned. Univision's coverage is more comprehensive and contains far more substance. I will grant, however, that they lose points for their advertising (one of the ads that ran repeatedly during Copa America was ironically an ad about athlete's foot), pimping of shitty pop stars and the ever-presence of the same damn song throughout an entire tournament.

Turner has pretty good streaming options, so I'm good with this. Fox Sports Go is garbage, and having a bunch of games on a channel that barely anyone has (Fox Sports 2) sucked.

Turner Sports announced their plans for UEFA Champions League and Europa League.

https://www.turner.com/pressroom/turner-acquires-exclusive-multi-platform-rights-uefa-champions-league-uefa-europa-league

Currently, there are six lives telecasts per week during the group stage: two per week on each of FS1, FS2, and ESPN2 (not sure if ESPN's sublicense is continuing in 17-18). During the knockout round, all matches are televised on FS1 or FS2.

Turner will show just four matches per week during the group stage and only two per week during the knockout round. Also, match start times have changed to allow Turner to show doubleheaders. The remaining games will be on their subscription service.
Turner’s UEFA Champions League coverage will include four live telecasts each week throughout the Group Stage (September through early December) – Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. ET – and two televised matches per week during the Knockout Phase (beginning in February) – Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 3 p.m. ET. All other matches will be available live through Turner’s new OTT sports platform launching in 2018, including direct access to the premium streaming service via Bleacher Report.

All semifinal matches, along with the UEFA Champions League final, will be nationally televised on TBS or TNT.
Excepting the final, all Europa League games will be subscription only. Currently, Fox Sports is showing at least one match per week.
UEFA Europa League matches will be available through Turner’s premium OTT sports platform – including access via Bleacher Report – with the UEFA Europa League final to be televised on TBS or TNT.
The Super Cup will be on TBS or TNT if you care about that sort of thing.
Turner will also televise the UEFA Super Cup on TBS or TNT, an exhibition match showcasing the winner from the previous year’s UEFA Champions League against the winner of that same year’s UEFA Europa League, beginning in 2018.

Also, if you're a cord-cutter, Univision has said it will air games on free over-the-air stations Univision and Unimas, in addition to cable channel Univision Deportes. They haven't yet detailed how many games will be on each platform.

Celtics/Roma owner James Pallotta says Serie A matches will be on ESPN and subscription service DAZN (CP has done work for them) this upcoming season. Although it is not confirmed, it had been reported IMG was selling Serie A and the FA Cup as package.

I just signed up for DAZN’s free trial .. first month free that is .. to check it out .. the International Champions Cup games are featured. Lots of choice it appears (including NFL) but I was less impressed with the streaming quality. Kind of reminded me of BeIN Sports streaming service.

i do have to say that I do not like what the Turner sports streaming model portends. People complain about paying for useless channels with their cable subscription. But for me it was convenient because I paid one amount getting everything I wanted without worrying about streaming quality.

Now, with every media company offering their own subscription service, they are asking us to pay 4-5, at some point even 10 different platforms, while maintaining usernames and passwords for each one. Maybe I am an old fart, but I don't find it convenient. Let me watch as many games as possible on my TV please.

Pricing is out, no Europa league games on TV except for the final, overall way less games on TV than on the streaming pay service. This sucks.
Turner Sports has announced pricing details and more coverage plans for its B/R Live streaming service, which will be broadcasting every single game of the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League and Europa League competitions to viewers in the United States.

The pricing plans range from individual matches ($2.99 per game), a monthly subscription ($9.99) or an annual plan ($79.99).

With a subscription to the streaming service, you’ll have access to more than 340 live Champions League and Europa League games per season including everything from the Group Stage (beginning in September) through to the finals (in late May and early June). B/R Live also streams select matches from the Scottish Premiership, Belgium Jupiler League, Polish Cup and Swiss Cup. Bleacher Report Live is available online, as well as by downloading the B/R Live app through iTunes or Google Play, and/or via Apple TV, the Roku platform and Amazon Fire TV.

In a seismic shift in how consumers are offered UEFA Champions League and Europa League matches in the United States, the only Europa League game featured on television will be the final (on TNT and B/R Live on May 29). Meanwhile, TNT will televise 46 UEFA Champions League games throughout the season. That’s in stark contrast to FOX Sports’ coverage of the Champions League where they showed 146 games per season on television. For the Europa League, FOX Sports had 205 Europa League matches on TV compared to TNT’s one.

Great news! I wonder what role Ronaldo played in that. Poor Ray Hudson- he can only ejaculate over and ruin Messi's Barca matches now.

Of course, TNT's pickup of CL and Europa will offset that to some degree.

The "double dip" approach that rights holders are taking these days can't possibly be sustainable. They can't squash illegal streaming, but they're pushing more and more folks in that direction.

BeIN is in contract disputes with several cable providers. It's been pulled from Comcast and will likely be pulled from Verizon soon.

http://www.philly.com/philly/business/comcast/bein-sports-off-comcast-soccer-la-liga-20180801.html
So I'm moving into a house on Friday. If my priority is Barca and Spurs/EPL matches (including UCL), what's my best bet? I've been thinking of going cordless and opting for a Firestick or Roku (would appreciate opinions here or directions to a thread regarding that discussion). FuboTV seems pretty legit, although it doesn't generate quite the savings I was hoping for. I will almost certainly go this route in the end. Moreover, I have a Netflix account (so I'd like to be able to use that thru the hardware I go with) and I'd also like to have DVR capabilities. My carrier options are Frontier (acquired Verizon Fios) and Spectrum (which everyone here hates).

That br/live post game show is bad. Seems choppy and disjointed, announcers seem to lack chemistry. Good to see Steve Nash though, Kate Abso is a pro, but so far it isn't working.

Is there any word on when the TNT app will allow YouTube TV subscribers to sign in?

I try to watch Bundesliga matches on the Fox channels but their production is miles behind NBC. The announcers aren’t as good and the lack of crowd noise makes it feel like I’m watching a friendly.

I know ESPN wants to rotate teams for the network game but I don’t get putting Juventus-Napoli on ESPN+. It’s the seventh match of the season so people that have bought + probably have already bought it.

Yes, I’m just mad because there are a number of things to watch at that noon time slot on Saturday and the local bar won’t carry espn+.

Matchday 2 or 3? Sure. That could drive subscriptions.

However, it’s past that point and to the point of trying to promote matches and get more outsiders interested. Although now that I think about it, college football is on all their networks on noon Saturday. I bet if the match was Sunday, it would be the featured match on ESPN2.

I went through the upcoming schedule to see if there is any pattern to how ESPN selects it matches for its linear networks.

Sun 9/30 9:00
Torino at Chievo
ESPNEWS

Sun 10/7 6:30
Parma at Genoa
ESPN2

(international break)

Sun 10/21 6:30
Empoli at Frosinone
ESPN2

Sun 10/28 1:00
Sampdoria at AC Milan
ESPN

That's a pretty bad fixture list. It looks like they are avoiding Saturdays for the near future, which is unfortunate because the early matches on Sunday are not typically high quality. 10/28 has a decent match. That is the one Sunday in the fall during which the United States is still on daylight saving time, while Italy is not, allowing the kickoff to occur right as ESPN's NFL shows are ending.

Does anyone know how to watch the Copa Libertadores match tomorrow at 8:45pm EST between River and Gremio? I have BeIn Sports, FS1, and FS2 but I don't see it listed.
