On his throwing shoulder, ARGH:

"Didi Gregorius will have Tommy John surgery on his throwing arm. “Realistic chance he plays the bulk of the season with us,” Aaron Boone said."

On the bright side, you can now promise Machado shortstop, at least for the first half of the season.
On the dark side, Machado isn't very good at shortstop, although SSS, I guess. Gleyber is a natural SS also, but both are decided defensive downgrades from Didi (alliteration!!).

Yeah, it was a tongue in cheek response. I'm sure Machado at 3B is the long term plan and I'l be fairly surprised if it doesn't happen.

Kudos to Gregorius for playing through both the wrist and the elbow in the ALDS. He didn't hit much but he made some nice plays in the field for a guy that banged up.

Cashman has already said "next summer". timeline once again murky on a big injury.

Gregorius has 1 year of arbitration left. I'm not saying he'll get non-tendered, but wonder how depressed the salary will be.

Actually I wonder if they non-tender him because of this and simultaneously work out a short extension, something like 3/40 including 2019. That might work for both sides.

I know position players don't need as much recovery time as pitchers but is it really realistic that he's back in time to play most of the season? Wasn't Crawford out for about 9 months?

Joe Sheehan is saying that's indeed not realistic, it seems like late summer at best.

Especially at the shortstop position, which regularly requires making tough off-balance throws that rely heavily on pure arm talent. I'm no DRS, but I imagine a functional elbow is necessary to do that.

In light of the Didi Gregorius Tommy John Surgery news, here's a table I prepared for when Corey Seager went down. Average return time for infielder undergoing TJS is just under 10 months. Note 6-9 month range for players who had TJS in the fall (offseason isn't delaying return)

Notably, not on the list is TJ Rivera. Had the surgery last offseason, missed the entirety of 2018.

Gleyber to SS. Neil Walker in the loop again. They need a lefty bat somewhere in the infield. They need a lefty bat in the OF too, besides Hicks.

Sad to hear this. Never want to see injuries, and other than him being a Yankee, I have no problems with Didi.

I was surprised to see him, on a couple of plays, bounce throws, both of which Voit scooped. Obviously now we know he was hurting.

A lot of people are saying this, I don't really see why. Lefty hitters can be shifted on, righty hitters are much harder to shift on.

It's just my anti-Stanton bias plus the lengthy Yankee history of loading up on lefty hitters to take advantage of the short porch in right. That plan goes back to 1923. This year's team was too righthanded, IMO.

They didn't have shifts in 1923 like they do now, it's harder for left-handed hitters these days. That Bryce guy is a lefty though... :)

I think Bryce Harper brings an intensity that would play well in this group, especially if the Dodgers would take Stanton away. Need LA to fall short in the playoffs for them to even think about Stanton.

Interesting to see that Furcal had a 15 month window in 2013. Would assume that technology with this type of surgery may have progressed and shortened that. The rest on that chart are from the previous decade. Wonder how similar the rehab period for Ohtani and the Angels is compared for Didi?

This sucks, I'm a bit of a Didi fan from his time in Arizona.

Do you think they would offer 3/40, or do a 1 year, show everyone you can play deal?

You mean for 2020? I think 3/40 should maybe work for both sides, Didi gets his $12M or so in 2019 that he would get in arb even though he won't be able to play most of the season, and NY gets 2+ seasons from him for $40M. That seems pretty fair both ways to me, but it's an unusual situation. When pitchers have Tommy John and their teams don't want to waste the 40 man roster spot on them all year, other teams generally sign them to two year deals but that's not just a new team, it's generally that they can't play at all in year 1 (like Eovaldi last year/this year).

I’d say this makes the Yankees more interested in Manny Machado.

When Didi comes back Manny can move to 3B and Andujar to DH .

Of course, there are cheaper options. I dont see Cashman spending more than 30+ million AAV for Machado but the early exit from the post season might motivate them to do more.

Or just non tender him and save that 12 million for 2 months of Didi and use it to offset some of Manny’s 30 million in 2019

Some team likely grabs Didi on a multi year deal though but Boegarts is available as a FA after 2019 if they want to move Manny to 3B in 2020

My idea has Didi on a 2/27 deal for 2020/2021, Bogaerts will get way way more than that if he has another season like this.

It seems like Machado is inevitable, no? I have talked to my good yanks friends who dont want to dedicate that much to him(I live in Denver and one is a huge Arenado fan and hopes you guys end up with him eventually) but with the money coming off the books it just seems like a natural fit, right? They also threw out the Stanton to LA possibility but were the Dodgers all that interested last year? And with the no trade clause that forces you to trade him only to LA basically, what kind of trade could you even work out?

edit: Is Andujar at 2b a non starter? would he be any worse there than he is at 3b?

Andujar is horrible at 3B. It definitely would be a non-starter.

Yea, that is what I was thinking. My friend threw out a potential Addison Russel deal, throw him at SS/2b(whichever one Torres doesn't play) with Machado at 3b, and Corbin in the rotation and the Yanks "win" the offseason. Glad we pulled out the ALDS win, the Yanks will be formidable the next few years. Hopefully one of Chavis/Dalbec turns into a star for us, we need some prospects to emerge ASAP

They should just let Torres play SS or re-sign Hecheverria to play for a half-season. Signing Machado because of a 3-4 month hole at a position is not needed. The Yankees don't need any more offense. They need pitching.

Andujar's future on a contending team is at 1B, LF or DH, and he has never played the first two. Edgar Martinez started as a 3B too, no reason Stanton can't move to LF and Andujar be the primary DH (and some backup 1B/3B).

An OF with Stanton and Judge at the corners would require them to meld the DNA of JBJ and Tris Speaker to make up for the presumed lack of range around him.

Huh? Not that UZR is definitive, but Stanton had a 17.7 UZR/150 this year and Judge had a 14.1.

Judge is a beast in RF with a cannon. People misjudge him because of his size but he moves quickly and covers a lot of ground.

I know it is human nature after you watch your team eliminate their arch-rivals to believe you are an expert on the deficiencies of said rival, but I am begging Sox fans to make better posts here or hold off on posting. Thanks.
