It's always hard to guess a 25 man roster for a single game 'series' especially in these days of more aggressive and adventurous pitching staff usage, but I will give it a shot.

Definite:

Sanchez, Romine (2)
Voit, Torres, Didi, Andujar (4)
Judge, Hicks, Stanton, McCutchen, Gardner (5)
Walker (1)

1 SP (Happ or Tanaka or Severino, I'm guessing Happ as of now) (1)
Betances, Britton, Robertson, Chapman, Green, Holder (6)

So that is 19, 6 to go. Add a second SP from the above group of three (I'll say Severino), Lynn, Hechavarria as a 3B defensive replacement, and that leaves three more relief spots, I will guess Loaisiga, Tarpley (a third lefty) and maybe Kahnle. Those last three seem wide wide open though, anyone who impresses this next week could jump in.

Gardner can do that, he won’t be starting, but sure, throw Tyler Wade in as a possibility.

What have Loaisiga or Tarpley done to suggest they should be on any kind of postseason roster this year? They both have very little experience, and their numbers are poor. I'd rather have Sabathia, Tanaka, or even Gray if the game is in Oakland.

Didi seems to think he can maybe play through it, we’ll see.

There is a lengthy article about it on the Athletic, neither DIdi nor Boone really know now. He got a cortisone shot today and said it felt better already, they will reevaluate in a few days.

Usually I am good at this but this is hard, even with just two games left. I will take a shot, but there are a lot of candidates for the last few pitchers and results the next two games could change this:

Definite:

Sanchez, Romine (2)
Voit, Torres, Didi, Andujar (4)
Judge, Hicks, Stanton, McCutchen, Gardner (5)
Walker (1)

2 SP (Happ and Severino, I'm guessing) (2)
Betances, Britton, Robertson, Chapman, Green, Holder (6)

So that is 20, 5 to go. Add Lynn, Hechavarria as a 3B defensive replacement, and that leaves three more relief spots, I will guess Loaisiga, Tarpley (a third lefty) and maybe Kahnle. Tyler Wade could replace Loaisiga also, lots of positional flexibility as well as pinch-running.

Other pitching candidates: German, Tanaka, Sabathia, Cole (no), Gray (please no), Cessa (no god no), and Sheffield/Adams (haven't gotten almost any chances to prove themselves so very unlikely)..

For some reason I can’t start a new thread but shouldn’t we be discussing Wednesday’s SP matchups?

I strongly feel that it should be Severino or Happ. With Happ being a lefty against the righty dominant Oak, I’m siding with starting Sev, having Happ back him up and in a best case scenario, we don’t need Happ and he can start game 1 against Boston.

I think it’s going to be Severino even though the A’s hammered him a month ago while Happ shut them down. The goal is probably 12 outs or so, and Severino will be on 7 days rest, so I can see the thinking.

The nine guys NY will likely be starting only started four games together, all in late September obviously. One was against the Orioles, the other three were against Boston and they won 10-1, lost 11-6 and won 11-6, 27 runs in 3 games.

Anyone check out this article on the Yankees bullpen, Analytics, and Boone’s approach?

The Yankees have paired the best bullpen ever with cutting-edge tools to optimize its usage. Will it be enough in the playoffs? https://theathletic.com/552336/2018/09/27/the-yankees-have-paired-the-best-bullpen-ever-with-cutting-edge-tools-to-optimize-its-usage-will-it-be-enough-in-the-playoffs/

To paraphrase, the bullpen roles are changeable by the day, by the team, by the opposing lineup, and it’s been that way almost all year.

I read that a few days ago, it read to me a bit like a PR puff piece. Yes, NY broke the record for bullpen WAR but they should, they have five freaking closers plus Holder. Whoever wants to take credit for bullpen management day to day, it certainly could have been better and needs to be next year.

Bit fluff but also helps me understand that Boone does have a logic and strategy.

OK, this wasn't too far off, the 20 I said were definite plus Lynn, Hechavarria, a third catcher in Higashioka, another SP in Tanaka, and Wade. Tarpley didn't make it as OAK only really uses one lefty hitter, he will be on the team if NY makes the ALDS.

Two changes for the ALDS roster, CC and Tarpley replace Wade and Higashioka.

Congrats to Tarpley, who didn't come up until Sept 1 but has carved out a role for himself in a loaded bullpen as a third lefty.

Bird can’t feel too great about himself but he deserves to be left off. There was a point in August where I recall him acting very entitled to the first base position and there was a small amount of brief backlash. He never established himself on either end of the ball and I’m not sure that he’ll have an opportunity in spring training if Voit has a strong postseason. Crazy how quickly the “first baseman of the future” can become obsolete.

Well, his initial hot streak was the end of 2015, then he showed signs at the end of last year but that's still less than half a season of solid play in 3 1/2 years. I agree that his window with NY is close to totally shut and what's even worse is that since he has minimal trade value, he will likely be the everyday 1B in Scranton next year (I assume he has options left but not positive).

Nothing personal against the Bronx Bombers (I'd do it too if I could get away with it) but it's not good for the sport when a catcher pitches in a playoff game

No way I'd waste a viable starter or reliever once that shitshow got out of hand knowing it's all hands on deck for Game 4. I'd have gone to a position player to pitch even earlier.

I root against the Yankees with all my might, but even I cannot muster any objection to them trying to save their bullpen a little. It’s a smart move, and it’s employed regularly as part of baseball strategy now.

As you note, you’d do it if it was your team
