If this happens he fills the Dorsett role from last year running posts and flys and if he gets a step he gets the ball and if not he opens up the underneath stuff right?

And...I'm also shocked we made the best offer, whatever it happens to be.
I don't think that is a given yet, the deal isn't done and leaking this could very well be the Browns letting people know the Pats are in on it in order to get a better offer.

The Patriots didn't have $8 million to pay Cooks. It would have been nice to keep him but they couldn't. He was a luxury they couldn't afford. I'm not sure why this point seems to get lost so often.
Because it's easy.

I, for one, am excited about this but also tempering my expectations. The only way a team in the Patriots' position can acquire talent is to:

1) Draft it (unlikely because they pick so low)
2) Pay for it in FA (unlikely because they try to balance the roster more than most teams)
3) Pick busts up off the scrap heap or other guys cut loose (low success rate -- most flame out for a reason)

#3 has been where they've gotten most guys -- from Phifer and Harrison early on to Moss, Welker and Hogan more recently. And certainly, Gordon falls into that category.

I think the real question with him is whether his problem is weed or mental illness (which if I had to guess, a lot of players suffer from). If the former, there's a chance the player is salvageable. If the latter, I'd be surprised if he sticks.

Do they sign Britt too? Or is it one guy or the other?

I don't see how anyone could not like this move. I mean, unless they gave up something ridiculous, it seems more than worth the shot. Yeah, he has had issues for sure. Yeah, it has been years since he put up any great numbers, or even played a season. He has also never had a real QB throw him the ball.

Well, based on the game thread comments this year, a lot of folks here would be happy if we shipped out Hightower.

Peter King hates this move, BTW:

And here's the relevant passage from his column (which he should have linked because I literally had no idea where he worked until I googled around):

1. I think it’s crazy and sad that the first thought among so many in our business and so many fans once Josh Gordon’s looming release became public Saturday was this: Should our team sign him? Gordon, one of the most troubled substance-abusers in recent NFL annals, on Saturday gave the Browns concern “that perhaps he was struggling again with his sobriety or on the verge of relapsing,” according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. To refresh memories:

• Gordon was suspended two games for substance-abuse in September 2013.

• He was suspended 10 games for substance-abuse in August 2014.

• He was suspended for the final game of 2014 by the Browns for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

• He was suspended for the full season in 2015 for substance abuse.

• After being reinstated for the 2016 season, he was suspended for the first four games of the season.

• Before finishing his 2016 suspension, he entered an in-patient substance-abuse facility. He missed all 16 games in 2016.

• He was reinstated midway through 2017 and played five games for the Browns.

• He missed much of training camp this season “as part of my overall health and treatment plan,” he said in July.

• He played the first game this season, against Pittsburgh, and reported to the team facility Saturday with a hamstring injury the team believed did not happen at practice during the week.

• He has played in six games since Christmas Day 2014, a total of six games out of the Browns’ last 51.

Jay Glazer reported Sunday that Browns GM John Dorsey had received feelers from three teams about dealing Gordon, with the likelihood he will be traded Monday.

Two questions: Can we let a 27-year-old man try to conquer his addictive demons first? And what is the rush to do this—have the teams drooling over Gordon taken time to consider that, since entering the league six years ago, he has been suspended five times and at least once was self-admitted to a rehab facility? I’m not suggesting Gordon be banned from football for life. I am suggesting that there is evidence—circumstantial evidence, but there’s some heavy smoke here—that there’s something amiss with Gordon. And this is moving way too fast for any team to satisfactorily examine Gordon.

The shock I feel with this move, if it happens officially, is that they are taking a chance on a guy with extreme issues. It's not just a little weed here and there. He's on record saying he's done opioids and even cocaine in his past. It's just shocking that Bill would do something like this.
Maybe Bill is looking for a hookup to get some of this stuff to take the edge off of watching this defense all season.

Officially official.

Trade now agreed to: Patriots are sending Cleveland a 5th-round pick and if Gordon isn't active for 10 games, Patriots get back a late-round pick from Browns, sources tell ESPN.

As @rapsheet reported, Patriots were closing in on trade for Gordon.
Trade now official.

This is the classic low-risk, high-reward move that this team needed. LOVE it. Giddy-up.

You're right, you would have think BB would have learned his lesson with Lawrence Taylor.

Think Brady will give up #12? I really hope Josh asks though.

Surprised Howie Roseman & the Eagles didn't get this done. Carson Wentz comes back on Sunday but his #1, #2 & #4 WR are out.

So if the Schefter report is true and he's indeed healthy - he's going to play on Sunday, right? I know that WRs on this team take time to learn the playbook but there's no history of a guy this talented joining in the middle of the season.

I just think back to what a monster Gordon was in that game in Foxboro 5 years ago. Obviously a lot of things can go wrong here, but what a talent the guy is.

I mean, why not? They desperately need an immediate infusion of talent and, more importantly, a potential long-term piece at receiver after, justifiably, trading Cooks in the off-season.

Probably won’t work out, but if it’s going to come together for him anywhere this is as good of a place as any.

Talent wise, well worth a chance. He's got his behavior/addiction hurdle, but also a new system hurdle so tempered expectations seems wise. Not to mention being removed from the game for a while.

They don't need him to put up 1500 yards though. He's a great potential complement to the existing talent.

I would guess that he is on the field for a handful of snaps, maybe Brady has a few designed 'go' route plays for him, but that's about it and he is mainly a decoy. Even if he knows more routes in the playbook, he hasn't practiced with the team, and it's unlikely that he knows the blocking schemes for plays when he isn't getting the ball. No one wants Brady to get creamed or a RB to get tackled for a loss because Gordon didn't know what to do in the event of a corner blitz.

In wonder if Belichick asked Hoyer for some inside-the-locker-room feedback about Gordon from the 2014 season.
