Jaylen at AEBL. Looks like his handle is better, which is good. If I had a time machine, I'd fast forward to preseason.

Looks like he's just starting to get a bit comfortable with some more advanced dribbling. Probably not game-ready yet, but the trajectory is good, and I wouldn't bet against the guy in any aspect of his game at this point.

Meh. He'll never qualify as a renaissance man until he can play Beethoven's Fur Elise-- at least the part that every beginning piano student plays.

The operative word here for any discussion of Jaylen qualifying at anything is "until." ;)

around the way
Somehow my bach joke made things worse. Actually that's not really a huge surprise. My decision not to capitalize his name--ironically--was a poor one

I wish these non-Celtics legends would stop trying to corrupt our young players by trying to teach them to shoot 3-15 footers. I just looked at a few random T-Mac seasons and he shot less than 40% from that distance. It's not 2006 anymore. Mid-range shots should be a last resort.

If you want to tutor Jaylen properly, teach him how to get to the rim with more strength and power.

I'd agree if we were talking about 20 foot jumpers, but 3-15 feet has a lot of utility if a player gets good at it.

The percentage you shoot from a given distance is less important than the volume you shoot, and the percentage you'd shoot from there uncovered.

The more spots on the floor that Brown and Tatum are threats from, the more drives and playmaking opportunities open up.

It's TMac, I doubt he has much to teach in the ways of strength and power. The one thing he was exceptionally good at is one of Jaylen's biggest weaknesses though. If TMac wants to tutor JB, tutor him in the art of play making please.

The skill is shooting off the dribble. There is no mystical ability to shoot from 15’. Unless you’re one of those guys that can only shoot from a few spots on the floor (like Shawn Marion) it’s just a matter of creating space to get off a shot.

To shoot mid range jumpers the relevant skill is his handle and footwork to get the defender moving in the wrong direction (see Pierce’s infamous step back jumper from the elbow or Tatum’s growing ability to hit that same shot). If McGrady can help Brown improve those items, then it’s all to the good.

The shots Jaylen gets will come in flow of Celtics offense, it doesn’t matter what T-Mac shows him in an open gym.

I think we're violently agreeing and I should have left off the "20 footer" part. Basically if Jaylen improves the skillset needed to get that mid-range shot off, a lot opens up in his game beyond the shot itself, both in terms of skills, and the need to overplay him in all parts of the court.

Yes, tremendous.

Two peak athletes from different sports side by side on drills and sprints. Spoilers, but that second race was close. I wonder if there is a distance where Jaylen would win.
