Daisuke is currently nursing a sore back but expects to return for the NPB All-Star Game, where he very well may start, since he is leading vote getter. That's right. Daisuke Matsuzaka might start the Japanese ASG.
Context please.

Which one sucks?
So, this didn't go so hot. He started the first ASG (of two), and threw 30 pitches in his 1 IP. 4 H including 2 HR, for 5 ER. And he hit a guy. Oh well.

In other Japanese ex-Sox news, Yomiuri Giants RP Koji Uehara is two holds away from putting up 100 Wins, 100 Saves, 100 Holds combined across his combined NPB/MLB career. He'd be the first Japanese pitcher to reach all of those milestones (I have no idea if non-Japanese pitchers have done so). Here's a video the Giants put together, with some horrible music:

Only Tom Gordon. Fitting for this thread.

Thanks so much for posting that.

So, at this point, what are the odds that Ells never plays another game in the MLB? 10%? 25%? 50%? He's 34 going on 35 and good things rarely happen to chronically injured guys at that age.
I assume you mean other than cash $1.8M cheques every month...for two more seasons :)

Jalen Beeks with the win yesterday for the Red Hot (at least at home where they are 20-4 over the past 24 games) Tampa Bay Rays.

5 innings (in relief) with 2 hits and 2 runs. Dropped his ERA to the mid 11's.

Bartolo Colon won his 246th game, more than any other player born in Latin America. There are only 50 players in history with more career wins than Bartolo Colon.

Here's a blast from the past -- Casey Kelly, now 28 years old, got called up by the Giants today. He's going to start for them tmw night.

And Pomeranz won’t cost anything next season.

Sadly, there’s no way Price is opting out, and we still have to pay $31 million a year for 4 more years of declining velocity and a calcifying elbow ligament.
If what we're seeing out of Price this year is him starting to re-invent himself, I'm fine with it. I mean, sure I wish it was less money, but I like having him on my team.

Clay Buchholz now at 5-2, 2.67 era, 1.141 whip for the D-Backs.
Looks like another Tommy John success story in the making. I’m happy to see him having good succcess. Always seemed like a good candidate to improve more than average as a result of the shift to the NL. The big innings he was prone to would be more limited in the NL, where you get to face a nonentity every time around the order.

Price seems to be a terrific candidate to reinvent himself while maintaining decent velocity. I saw that he’s 3rd in MLB at Cutter percent and 10th in Changeup percent. Then they showed video and the motion for both pitches looks the same. Love to see him pitching wily with the stuff he has.

I agree. Price may be a lot of things, but stupid ain't one of them.

Koji accomplished the feat a few games later, though I noticed he got his 100th Hold by pitching in a tie game, and it turns out the rules for holds in the two leagues are actually slightly different, and you can get a Hold in NPB by keeping a game tied. Interesting tidbit which I would never have known if he'd pitched with a lead.

His signed jersey from the game will be on display in the NPB HoF museum at the Tokyo Dome until August 19th, when it will go on auction, with proceeds going to victims of the recent flooding in Western Japan.

Buchholz with a gem this week as well.

Color me unsurprised that Beeks is having success in Tampa. His dominance at AAA was just too significant that it wouldn’t translate.

Michael Kopech got the call from the White Sox and will be making his ML debut tomorrow vs. the Twins. He has a 3.70 ERA in AAA this season with a 12.11 K/9 and 4.27 BB/9. He has been great over the past month.

haven't seen it mentioned but Ty Buttrey was called up to the Angels a week ago and has pitched 2 times, each scoreless innings. 2 hits, 1bb, 0k.

If you missed Kopech's (rain shortened) MLB debut, check out this GIF Breakdown by Nick Pollack.

His stuff is absolutely electric. If Kopech can get more consistency out of his change-up, he's an ace.

He can also be added to the list of players with some shitty tweets in their past. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/24457381/michael-kopech-chicago-white-sox-says-offensive-tweets-were-immature-inappropriate

I can't say I'm shocked, given what a meathead he was while in The System.

Heard this stat on MLB radio this morning:

Leader for most games in which you pitched at least 5 innings and gave up 1 run or less, 2016-2018 (or maybe it was 2015-2017, they said, “last three years”):

John Lester- 41 times.

He was also 17 and gay bashing is a thing in High School. Not really excusing his behavior but I'm willing to give him a pass. I'm glad social media didn't exist when I was in HS. Everything was Jewish in 1995.

Of course there's also a difference between being an ignorant HS kid trying to be trendy and/or cool and actually hating groups of people. Is he John Rocker or was he just a dumb 17 year old kid?
