The script will be that regular season games are not to be celebrated. They will harp on the Red Sox struggles in the post season recently and the fact that the Red Sox did nothing to improve their chances in the post season (no bullpen additions).

It's garbage radio.
Which also ignores the fact that by getting Evoldi you do improve your bullpen, especially in round 1 because 1 or 2 out of Evoldi, Price, Porcello and E Rod are going to be pitching out of the pen in that series. (in addition to Pomerantz and Johnson if you value them at all)

Exactly right. A caller brought this up a few days ago. They agreed in the moment and then immediately pushed the idea aside because it didn't fit with the narrative.

And that they're 5th in mlb in bullpen era, so they must be doing something right in the pen this year

But they stayed away from the bullpen all weekend, and when they did, Kimbrel almost crapped himself and Hembree DID crap himself!

Callers: But Mazz... Kimbrel hadn’t pitched for an extended period of time, and Hembree would have had runner-on-third-two-outs instead of one-run-in-runners-on-the-corners-no-outs if Bogaerts hadn’t booted the grounder. Plus... the Yankees bullpen crapped their pants in two of the four games, especially Chapman.

Mazz: Bogaerts can’t boot that ground ball there. And Cora was still afraid of the bullpen. The Yankees lost focus.

Felger: yeah... there’s something “off” about the Yankees.

Some brilliant analysis there.

*sigh*

yes the yankees will not win the div but if boston does not win the worlds series by 2019 they are sit up for 3-4 years of 500 ball while the Yankees are sit up for a 5-6 year run after-this season

and with the Yankees having 68 mil to burn after this year if they wanted to oh and they still have fraizer and Sheffield to use or trade for a ace the yankees rotanion for 2019 is 1 luis s 2 tanska 3 happ/lynn/adams i am sure fraizer will fill a spot all the yankees need for 2019 is 1 ace and a backup C or 2 num 2 starters that can eat innings i think since chris archer is in pittburgh the yanks couild make a play for him and rick porcello

so if i ran the yanks this what the 2019 rotation wouilb be 1 archer 2 luis s 3 tanska 4 poroello 5 happ/lynn/frazier

F&M are now trolling the Pats and Brady on DFG (AGAIN) , I can't listen to these jerks anynore.
I had to go across town yesterday so I thought that I'd listen to what F&M had to say after a weekend of Red Sox domination. It was all Pats talk and Felger said, "Hey, tomorrow I have some Deflategate takes that I want to talk about." I think that Jim Murray audibly groaned and Felger asked what his problem was. Murray explained that Deflategate is boring bullshit to talk about and Felger went on and on about how it was the greatest thing that ever happened to him (from a content perspective) and that he couldn't wait to dredge it up again.

This got me thinking. You're Jim Murray. Your job is to talk on the radio for four hours. Imagine if your boss said, "I know it's two years old but we're going to spend most of the day rehashing Deflategate", wouldn't you shove a gun in your mouth and pull the trigger this morning? It's easy for us, there are off switches on our radios, but that guy has to sit there and listen to Felger (who bragged he knows more about Deflategate than anyone) drone on and on and on and on and on and on about something that was complete horseshit the day it broke.

BTW, I'm not sure why I heard this but Adam Jones had his take on the Sox last night: "Wins in August mean nothing, prove it to me in October."

Of all of the crutches that sports radio hosts use, "Prove it to me" is the most obnoxiously aggressive sentence starter in their arsenal. Fuck you, Adam Jones. Prove to me you're nothing more than a Felger-lite with luke-warm takes.

Apparently the story about Brady refusing to thrown the ball-guys under the bus for something he thought them innocent of, was enough to get Felger wet and in the mood.

For all the interesting and timely topics they are fortunate enough to choose from they insist on maintaining a 2-man circle jerk.

The thing your missing is Jim Murray sold his soul and is part of the problem. He's a character at this point, much like the rest. He's on the Felger train, much like Adam Jones, and is looking to make a career on being a contrarian. I don't listen to F&M much at all any more, maybe 10-20 min a week but it's painful.

I know the top guys in radio make a lot and Murray is trying to claw his way up to get one of those salaries and is content being awful doing it, like Jones. What else is he going to do in his late 30's, become a financial analyst? He has a cake job in a great market and sees his awful co-hosts making a boat load. Go look across the street who thinks that K&C and OMF are drive time material.

And we also know from this thread, and others like it, that someone arguing on media that they are using a crutch to make money, others will defend their right to use that crutch and say there is nothing wrong with using the crutch, because it makes sense for them to use the crutch, so there's no reason, apparently, not to keep listening to the crutch, so...

I know and I completely agree with this statement, but there has to be some part of him that's like, "Fucccccck. I have to talk about this bullshit for another four hours?", it just seems like torture. And I think any self-reflecting person would wonder if it is all worth it?

I almost feel bad for Adam Jones at this point. This guy is trying so hard to be outrageous that to me it’s not even annoying — it’s just downright laughable at this point.

Even Skip Bayless would probably tell him to tone it down.

I have to kind of defend Deflategate being brought up. It's timely again because a book was written on it and the story about Brady being offered $1M fine to throw the guys under the bus is newsworthy. They didn't decide to randomly bring it up....it's back in the news because of the book.

I understand that, and Felger mentioned the book, but who gives a shit anymore? Are we any closer to figuring out what really happened? Does anyone really care? It's just a rehash of the same old shit that we talked about two years ago.

They are railing against Brady because Bedard thinks he has an arm injury due to him shaking his arm out. Do these asinine idiots know that every QB(much like a pitcher) goes through a dead arm period in camp?

Or maybe he has arm cancer. But Brady "shaking his arm out" isn't an indication of anything.

In Felger and Mazz world, Brady has arm fatigue because he is a lazy diva who just wants to coast because Jimmy isn't there to push him anymore.

Tony won't stop talking about what a "bad win" the Red Sox had last night. The only thing that matters is the bullpen sucked. Mazz isn't going to be fooled by all this winning in the regular season. He does not think winning like this is sustainable in October.

In the five minutes I listened yesterday Felger was talking about how he was going to bet hard on the Redskins tonight. He admits he has no clue what the Redskins have done in the off-season to improve, and doesn't think that preseason games mean anything, but Bill has been soft this preseason and the Pats have barely practiced, so they are going to get crushed. This is because Bill is teaching the team a lesson about what happens when coaches let the team have fun.

Agree 100%. I can’t remember the last time I had EEI or TSH on and I used to be a sports radio junkie. Podcasts with reputable people and a less hot take-y format are the way to go...

What are the good Boston sports podcasts that you’d recommend? I listen to plenty of national ones...but as an out of towner I still want something Boston centric.

Now that you mention it, I guess I don’t listen to any? The BS podcast is always Boston-centric even though it’s a national podcast. Other than that I find that the good national ones (Russillo, Lowe, the Ringer feed) do an excellent job when Boston sports is the national news (a lot).

I don't know if this is true, but a friend told me Felger said on-air he bet between $10-15k on the game.

He's full of shit, married real well, or is banking a shit ton dough trolling.

Who the hell bets $10k+ on a game you can't handicap?

As I mentioned up thread, I happened to hear the segment when he was talking about betting on the Redskins. I didn't hear him give a number, but I only listened for about 5 minutes. Regardless, I didn't take him seriously that he was going to bet on the Redskins, it was just schtick. I expect that today he'll say he wasn't seriously talking about betting on a pre-season game, and regardless he was right because the starters looked like dogshit in the first half.

Yeah... I heard it too, including the $10-$15k comment. I wouldn't believe it for a second. He knows absolutely nothing about either team at present. As in zero. It was just a comment that provided an exclamation point on his hot take that the Patriots haven't even practiced so far in training camp.

P.S. But I thought Coach Bill's comment that the Pats played "38 seconds of situational football" in response to one of Burton's inane halftime questions was hilarious.

My 2 scents: Felger owns it, takes the grief (it would be much worse if he says it was BS, and there was no bet). He now can turn it into a season meme "Can Felger get even?" and he gives his Pats lock of the week, or some marketing/betting schtick.

He’s backed off a bit this afternoon. He definitely laid money on the skins but now it’s “do you really think I’d bet $10,000 on a football game? I hate paying $35 a year for Bedards website (Boston Sports Journal)”

And btw, I think his proclamation yesterday about $10-$15k had a non negligible effect on last night’s ratings

Isn't 10K about 1% of Felger's salary? Ordway was making 7 figures when he got canned by EEI the first time. Preseason is silly to bet on, but I'd believer Felger can go low 5 figures on a single bet.

Don't kid yourself, he's loving it. Feeds his ego that his opinions somehow matter.
I agree that he is loving it and he receives a fairly sizable paycheck that reiniforces that ego.

Someone in the gamethread last night said that despite Price’s recent good performances, the Price haters were on mute until game two of the ALDS. Made me think of Massarotti. Man, I can’t stand that guy’s radio personality.

In light of the result of today's Sox game, Mazz just caved on air, "This is their year." Felger rightfully knocked him for sounding so depressed when he said it. It was a funny moment.

Felger and Mazz: This game doesn't count because the Texans suck.

Felger: They GAVE YOU THE BALL. Can we at least have a team that doesn't just GIVE YOU THE BALL ON THE FIRST PLAY?Can We cool it about saying the off-season drama doesn't matter?"

they are just going to bash every opponent and say every game is worthless. They aren't tested etc...

I just wish they would discuss the game and not how accurate the "media narrative is."

They do this every week in football. They do this after every big game in the NBA, NHL and MLB. The other teams sucks, the home teams are always lucky. Unless the home teams lose in which case the other teams are always much better and you're dumb for ever believing in the home team and this game (no matter if it's a baseball game in May or a hoops game in December) is 100% proof positive that the home team absolutely blows.

deep inside Guido territory
Felger ripped Kyle Van Noy this week but not only for his on the field play but attacked his character. It was a low point even for him. Here is what he said.

While discussing Van Noy’s recent play Wednesday, Felger starting hurling personal insults at the linebacker. “I don’t like him,” Felger said, as transcribed by Barstool Sports’ Jerry Thornton. “To me, it’s personal. I’ve never met him, but every time he opens his mouth I’m like ‘You are a tool!’ You are an ass. Every time I hear him talk I’m like, ‘Where did that attitude come from? You suck. And if it wasn’t for this team you’d be covering punts in Detroit. You suck! Where do you get that attitude from?’”

Van Noy's response was very classy.
“Me, honestly, I don’t really care if anybody ever says I’m a bad player, because everyone’s entitled to their opinion,” Van Noy told NESN.com. “But once you come at my character, that’s what I got an issue with. Especially when I’ve never met you. Because it’s like, I know those two guys wouldn’t say that to my face because then they wouldn’t like what would be coming for them-type-of-deal. “It’s just, people don’t like you and that’s OK. I’m OK with that, but since those guys are on a national, or more importantly in the Boston area, you would think they would want to be more appreciative of the guys that play football for the Patriots instead of being negative. I’m going to extend an invitation for them to come to my fundraiser coming up and see what I’m really about

The linebacker reiterated that he’s not bothered by criticism of his play. “That’s OK,” Van Noy. “I don’t care. I’ve been dealing with that since I’ve been young. And that’s OK. I’ve learned to accept that. I’ve just got a problem with you coming at my character, especially when you’ve never talked to me. I feel like any of you guys have been able to come over, and I haven’t been rude or any of that. It was kind of disappointing.”
