Any NL teams need a MIF PH bat that also has excess relievers? Nunez is now expendable.

And the defensive replacement at 3rd when Devers returns. Sox are set for the playoffs now, unless a good reliever becomes available.

1B: Moreland/Pearce (Swihart)
2B: Kinsler/Holt
3B: Devers/Nunez
SS: Bogaerts/Holt

OF: 3B's plus Martinez (Pearce, Swihart)

C: Leon/Swihart (Vazquez)

12 pitchers

Nick likes Shane Greene. I can't figure out why. He's been ineffective in 1 of every 4 appearances this season and his velocity has dropped in the last month.

Love the Kinsler pick up. As others have said, DD has done a masterful job dumpster diving and finding real upgrades in Pearce, Eovaldi, and now Kinsler. Still think they need a reliever.

Do we see the BrockStar in the OF before Pearce or Swihart?

Soria and Giles were also traded. I don't think Leclerc was.

I'd add Avilan, Greene, Madson, Kelley, Iglesias, D. Hernandez, Romo, Givens, Taylor Rogers, Belisle, Clippard, and Tepera to the list of availables.

Apparently Ziegler has been dealt but no word on to who yet. I know the Cubs are in on him too but I’d really like to have him back in Boston.

Ziegler worries me a bit. His ERA isn't very good, and his FIP is worse. Walks a fair amount, doesn't strike out very many. K/BB is terrible. WHIP isn't very good either. Seems a bit HR prone.

I'd prefer we stay away.

He’s always been a guy who outperformed his peripherals though. And he’s got an incredible ground ball rate which, as I believe someone pointed out in last night’s GT, could play well with the acquisition of Kinsler and his glove.

Well, that's this year. Last year, he was fairly bad in a different way.

I don't see how Ziegler helps this team at all. He's the 5th best arm in the bullpen. 6th once Eovaldi goes to the pen in the playoffs.

I will say his freakish GB% does make him kind of exciting in a OOTP kind of way (this is the guy I'm gonna use when I really need a double play!). But I doubt there's much there there IRL.

^ are you sure Eovaldi is going to the pen? I could see him surpassing Rick come October, at least for two times around the batting order.

A quick look at the other arms in the Miami bullpen and I think I’d prefer Steckenrider to Barraclough. Barraclough has serious BB/9 issues and looks to be getting some real help from BABIP this year. Steckenrider has better peripherals, a slightly harder fastball, and two more years of control.

Maybe. I have vague feelings that Eovaldi's top rate stuff will play up better in relief than Porcello, and Porcello hasn't done anything to lose the job.

But anyways, even if true Ziegler just becomes 6th best guy after Porcello. Seventh once Pom joins them!

Porcello has a 4.53 FIP since May 9, which ranks 91st out of 141 qualified starting pitchers. He's fine to have on the team, but he should be eminently bump-able from a playoff rotation.

Source w/ knowledge of talks between Marlins/Red Sox re: Ziegler suggests Sox are "more interested in a power arm" if they add bullpen piece
Seems to fit DD’s MO. I see them not making a move today but being active in August in trying to find that power arm.

After watching last year's post season, I think that it matters relatively little who starts and who comes out of the pen. With the exception of Sale, the expectation for the starters will likely be that they get through the lineup once/get into the 3rd or 4th, and then they'll be pulled at the first sign of trouble, and a mix of other starters and relievers will piece it together. And I expect pretty much every starter to pitch in relief at some point unless things have gone exceptionally well.

This is what I think, as well. Kinsler, Eovaldi, and Pearce were exactly what this team needed for the next month, covering over the holes left by specific injuries that happened to the roster as built over the offseason.

Deciding what reliever to get, if any, will be a decision looking ahead to October, and will be informed by what Barnes, Kelly, and Thornburg show over the next 2-3 weeks.

Except that the blocking of decent relievers in August will work against the team with the best record

D-Backs just got Ziegler.

I want Yates the most. Kimbrel insurance.
Not sure how Yates happens unless we take back salary.

Spitballing dumbly here, but maybe DD can facilitate some absurd three-way deal that gets Archer to San Diego and brings us Yates, taking back Phil Hughes/Hechavarria/Carlos Gomez or something.

Yates's 250 OPS vs RHBs is appetizing.

EDIT: and I see he's a 2005 Sox draftee. 26th round (along with Arrieta by Milw.)

And lets not forget Durbin Feltman, currently sporting a -0.10 FIP in Single A.

And this is why I don’t really expect DDski to get one at all.

I actually think the team doesn’t need one for the rest of the season. And in the postseason, Cora can bolster the pen with starters.

Getting Eovaldi was a major score.

If they want to block the Sox, they’ll actually have to execute the trade, no? Considering many of those teams have already made trades for relievers, I’m not sure how big of a worry this really is.

No ... they just get the claiming rights. If no trade is made, the player remains with team that tried to pass him thru waivers.

Plus, Astros, Mariners and A's could all be looking for relievers anyway

Yikes. Weren’t there rumblings that Feltman might progress quickly enough to pitch in the bigs this year when we drafted him?
Yep. 99 mph with a nasty slider doesn't take a lot of seasoning in the minors to make into a thing.

I bet we see him in September, and if he pitches well in September...

Trying to remember the rules like every year with these waivers. The claiming team can work out a trade, but if they don’t (i.e. a straight block effort) does the waiver pass on to the next claiming team? Also cant the waiving team can just say “ok, he’s yours” and the claiming team would have to add him to their 40?

Edit: here’s the text from mlb:

The player's original club has three options when a waiver claim is placed: It can either work out a standard trade with the claiming club (the two sides have 48 hours to agree to a deal), allow the player -- and all money remaining on his contract -- to go to the claiming club with no return or pull the player back off waivers. A player who is pulled back off waivers can be placed on trade waivers a second time, but at that point the waiver request becomes irrevocable. If a player passes through waivers unclaimed, he can then be traded to any club, free of restriction (though all 40-man-roster players in the trade must clear waivers before being dealt).
A blocking team runs a risk of having to take on the player. They can’t just negotiate in bad faith and wash their hands of it.

Edit 2: reading that the claiming team can also rescind their claim? What happens then?

I just want him, like I'd want 10 minutes with Derek Jeter's wife. Maybe not that much. It's probably not happening.
