Holy crap, I flipped this on and Jim Murray is apparently going full on Sideshow Bob with slide whistles and bike horns and Mazz was making fun of Brady for being fat. The show has fallen so far from where it started.

Flipped it on for 3 minutes today and caught these two doozies: 1) DD hasn't done much in Boston. All they have to show for his trades are Sale and Kimbrel. 2) Is anyone else shocked the Sox have the best record in baseball but don't have prospects or payroll flexibility to make a big deal at the deadline?

Maz is like Constanza during his opposite phase

These guys are absolutely joyless. It’s like the Sports Hub decided to put on a sports talk show with hosts that hate sports.

I don’t need cheerleading, but the endless hatred of everything is exhausting. I often listen for a few minutes in the afternoon and always regret it.

Agreed. Yesterday they were discussing the recent Bedard article regarding the alleged unresolved Belichick/Brady/Kraft tensions, and Murray said something along the lines of “I hope Brady half-asses it all year and burns the place to the ground.” So, they’ve progressed from merely being absurdly critical of possibly the greatest local sports franchise of all time, to actively rooting for it to fail/collapse.

It is something else. Boston teams are doing well right now. Boston is on an historic stretch and they act like they are just fucked. It is surreal. Whole segments about how bad things are. If you were in a coma, did not know the Sox record and saw the show, you would think Boston was 10 games out or worse. Yes, they have to be critical at times, but the Sox and DD have found a winning roster/manager. We should be comparing this team to other great teams. Instead an hour on "Should we have traded for Stanton even though JD is a triple crown possibility." Does Murray think the asterick bit is funny? Because of a weak 162 game schedule? How are they so popular!!!!

The Celtics look to be great too after the kids grew up in the playoffs. And they are like, "is Kyrie Irving even worth anything in a trade"

Jim Murray literally said, "I know this is hard for fans to hear, but he has no trade value." What the hell? They had a great team with Irving and they have this amazing team, and tons of assets, and Lebron went to the Lakers. So much to talk about besides assessing Irving's trade value.

I've stopped listening to all sports radio at this point. I miss it, but the manufactured garbage they all put out there got out of control a long time ago.

I'm between jobs now (as much voluntary as involuntary at this point) and one of the fringe benefits of having no commute is not listening to these assholes as much as I would if I were working.

I rarely ever listen anymore, but am I correct in saying a few years ago that it seemed Murray was a lot more rational and tolerable?

If that’s the case, I wonder if being around all the negativity has just made him miserable. Or maybe it’s just all an act. Either way, it’s insufferable.

Murray came in as the Boston fanboy, I don't listen to him at this point either but I assume it's an act.
You would think they would want a fanboy to act as a counter balance to the other nattering nabobs but they've just gone full out negative.

Everyone gets old (stale) and harder to listen to after a few years. Christian Archand is going to get a lot of good reviews on here for a few years, and they will eventually turn sour. It's the nature of the beast. Bertrand was popular for awhile too, and then he wasn't.

In his Saturday show Murray openly declared that he hates baseball. Should make for great radio the next few months as it's the only major sport in regular season !

Training camp starts this week. That station will be all Brady/Belichick/Gronk/Kraft soap opera drama from 6am until midnight every day until February. It the Red Sox lose in the playoffs, they will take a day to rip them. If they win the whole thing, they will take a half a day to attempt to diminish the accomplishment before getting back to the regularly scheduled Patriots soap opera.

Bertrand was awesome in the 3rd chair and then he didn't get the night time gig that went to Jones and I think he gave up trying to be the voice of reason against both Felger and Mazz.

Bertrand is great with Zo and I love their chemistry when I have a chance to listen to them.

Arcand is going to be fine and it's nice to see him get his shot and more air time.

The problem is they move the goalposts every time.

In April it was, "These guys aren't for real. Every team starts out hot, let's see where they are in June!"
June comes, the Sox are still kicking ass. "Well, it's just because they haven't hit the dog days yet. Let's see what happens in July and August!"

If the Sox pass all of these tests and October comes around and they win the World Series the conversation turns into, "Well, yeah, they won this year. Who cares? Let's see what they do in December when it's the Winter Meetings or next year when a whole bunch of guys become free agents. Then you'll see!"

I don't know, man. I don't understand how you could work so hard to be something that you've dreamed about (talking sports for a living!) and just be so constantly and consistently negative. I wonder what fucked them up?
They did this exact thing in 2013. It’s a carbon copy. Mazz especially will do this like he did in 2013. I think it wasn’t until after game five of the World Series when he finally relented. They’ve become what they supposedly disliked about EEI and I’m disappointed.

Mazz is just as brutal on Twitter.

If the Red Sox do something well, he’s mostly nowhere to be found.

Anything that he perceives as a negative? His Twitter mysteriously works again.

He was all over the Yankees trading for Britton last night.

No they still crap on the 2013 team. It was a complete fluke, a lucky season, etc Even though they were wire to wire the best team in baseball...they make it seem like we backed into the playoffs and needed a miracle playoff run to win

I'm not fond of defending these two, but I think that when they call the 2013 team a "fluke" they mean in the grand sense. Like in 2011, they blew that big September lead. In 2012 and 2014, they were last place teams. In 2013, they won it all after Cherington hit jackpot on ALL of his free agent acquisitions. Don't get me wrong, I love that club and it was an awesome story, but if you look at it in the larger context, the 2013 team was pretty much the definition of a fluke.

It wasn't like the 2007 team where you could see young guys like Pedroia, Papelbon and Lester and think, "Hey, these guys are young and good and they're set up for the future" (like this 2018 team) or the 2004 which felt like a culmination of a lot of near misses. The 2013 team was a patch-work team where everything came together for a great year. And that's okay, different teams elicit different emotions, but I think a lot of people were having fun with the 2013 but were quietly waiting for the wheels to fall off.

I listened to a lot of F&M in 2013 and Felger and Bertrand used to give Mazz a lot of shit for him being down on the Red Sox that year. I think by July, he was playing a character though. Like he realized that this might be a special Sox team, but he had dug his heals in so deep that he couldn't do an about face. Which is something completely different.

Murray is the absolute worst....I get frustrated listening to Felger, but he's good at his job so I generally enjoy listening to the show until he goes on and on and on about something that's already been beaten to death (ie yesterday with butler), but I find Murray to be so intolerable, that I almost instinctively change the station as soon as I hear his grating voice.

Woof, I haven't listened much at all lately but caught them in the car today around 2 and Murray is trying to dish the hottest of hot takes. He's worse than Tanguay win his prime. BB is done after this year so who cares? BB is giving a middle finger to the fans. The Patriots are the worst. God is he insufferable. I like when the Pats and BB are challenged and they get away with a lot but F&M and Murray are awful. They're literally just making up hot takez like BB is done, Brady hates everyone with nothing to go off on but let's just start talking about it. At least J-Stew has some Celtics info during the winter.

The fact they can draw 14+ ratings is awful, it just breeds awful radio. I'm going full on Keefe & Dale podcasts once they go middays if they're posted in time. As a one time big fan of F&M, it is radio at almost it's worst. K&C is the absolute bottom and by far the worst, but F&M is the level above that.

And who's this Adam Jones guy that people keep retweeting on twitter (I may have to start following new people). Took a stroll through his timeline last night, and holy shit. What a miserable prick. Is his shtick to just hate the Red Sox (and other Boston teams, I suppose)?

edit.....I did search this thread and it appears that others have noticed the same. I don't get 98.5 where I live, but I had at least heard of most of the personalities. Not this dude.

Jones' nom de guerre on the station is The Sports Vulture and The Dark Knight. He specializes in particularly antagonistic hot takes, which is why Felger loves him. It's not about reporting or objective evaluation with them, it's about whether there's a potential "story" that will provoke the carrion represented by callers to their programs. There is no such thing as "good sports talk" anymore with F&M (or Jones), it's about contrived storylines and outlasting rational participants by sticking with a point of view that they defend (and beat) to the death, irrespective of its veracity.

Good lord, "The Dark Knight"? An adult man who is a professional broadcaster on a sports radio station thinks it's cool that he's known as "The Dark Knight"?

We live in a country full of imbeciles.

Hearing sports radio guys under the age of 45 or so makes me cringe. They're so...dweeby, for lack of a better word.

It's a medium that is decidedly pompous despite being one of the easiest forms of media to parody effectively. Put on a goombah accent, call yourself something ethnic like Sal from Bay Ridge, and make up a dumb trade idea. You have basically parodied real WFAN callers and everyone knows it.

So to see guys who unironically buy into those tropes is really strange. Sports talk radio should be more like the Deadcast or Chapo, at least if it's being hosted by people who aren't AARP members. Calling yourself the Dark Night and firing off lame-o hot takes is basically saying "I'm not cool even by sportsball fan standards." C'mon.

You're 100% right.

I wonder how much Murray gets paid and if it's worth it. I don't think anyone goes into their dream job hoping to piss people off, not be truthful and just be a dick. I don't know, maybe people do. It seems like an incredibly sad existence to me.

I saw an ad the other day that Murray was appearing at the Grand Opening of a new Planet Fitness in Merrimack, NH - so he's not getting paid enough to not have to do shit like that, at least.

I'm not sure what's worse for Planet Fitness, Jim Murray there or the one in Plaistow with the Naked Guy getting arrested and claiming he thought it was a Judgement Free Zone https://patch.com/new-hampshire/salem-nh/man-doing-yoga-naked-nh-gym-arrested-police

Also for clarification The Dark Knight is Adam Jones, Jim Murray is just the miserable hipster doofus who wears scally caps slurping up Felger and Mazz's hot takez.

I dont listen to Adam Jones as much because I'm not driving a lot at night, but he now RELISHES the dark night moniker now like Ortiz did Big Papi.

Before it was like a little throw away but now that IS their show. Their lead in with F&M openly embrace it, all the other hosts play clips of his more outrageous takes ("LOL A TRIPLE PLAY?? Cute. No one cares")

And after his lead in music he spends a solid minute introducing himself/the show..
...It's the dark knight
..THE most negative show in Boston
....4 hours of misery

Today 3 mins into the show tonight, Zo called in to talk about Jones complaining about the Sox complaining about the rain out

His other take was "the Yankees didn't work the count...only 86 pitches!".
Of course that contradicts his "hittable pitches" take..if the pitches were so hittable why would the Yankees NOT swing at them.

He has since tweeted that the RS are in the driver’s seat and that the RS have an edge over NYY insofar as managers are concerned.

But make no mistake — half way into this weekend series, he is deeply disappointed, as is his sidekick.

I imagine he was doubly pissed that the game was over in less than two and a half hours, so he couldn't harp on the endlessly long games that these two teams play. After all, he made a point of actually watching the game last night. It was over by 9:25...he didn't even have to push back his bedtime.

12 of the 18 batted balls against Porcello had an exit velocity of 95 mph or higher. That was his worst percentage in a start all season. His stuff certainly appeared hittable.

I wouldn’t be shocked if the hosts at 98.5 actually flipped the script going forward, completely ignoring they’ve mocked the Red Sox the whole season.

I could see them setting them up to fail, talking about how they are vastly superior to everyone else in baseball and how anything short of an easy World Series win is a disaster.

The script will be that regular season games are not to be celebrated. They will harp on the Red Sox struggles in the post season recently and the fact that the Red Sox did nothing to improve their chances in the post season (no bullpen additions).

It's garbage radio.
