Not here
That's a damn shame. It's my fault he stopped winning, of course.

He burned his hand putting out a fire caused by some candles his wife lit in the hotel bathroom. When asked why, he said, "Why do women do anything?"

And Boggs hurt himself putting on his boots
And arachnophobe Glenallen Hill woke up from a nightmare about being chased by spiders and in a frightened semi-comscious state fell through a glass table.

Eshelman Will Stay In Rotation

Boston Red Sox notes

May 08, 1995|By PAUL DOYLE; Courant Staff Writer

DETROIT — In two games, Vaughn Eshelman has gone from a questionable Double A pitcher to the Red Sox's best starter.

Eshelman, a lefthander, had his second scoreless outing Sunday, allowing four hits in seven innings as the Red Sox beat Detroit, 12-1. In his major league debut Tuesday, Eshelman allowed three hits in six innings at Yankee Stadium.

His performance will keep him in the rotation. Eshelman (2-0) will start Friday night against the Yankees at Fenway Park.

``Once again, he had total command,'' manager Kevin Kennedy said. ``He changes speeds on all his pitches and mixes it up. He seems to have a real feel for throwing off hitters' timing.''

Eshelman, 25, pitched for Double A Bowie, Md., last season, but was not added to the Orioles' 40-man roster and was a Rule V selection in the off-season. If the Red Sox had elected not to keep him after spring training, they would have sent him back to the Orioles.

But Kennedy liked Eshelman's arm and figured he could use him as a middle reliever all season.

When Kennedy was forced to start Eshelman in New York, he said it was a short-term move. Now, Eshelman will stay in the rotation.

Eshelman's success is due most to his level-headed approach.

``You just envision all the time, when you're pitching in the minor leagues, of how you're going to get this guy or Cecil Fielder out,'' Eshelman said. ``And the things that I had in my visions are happening. It's just great.''

Injury report

Jose Canseco, John Valentin (sore left leg) and Mark Whiten (strained left hamstring) will not play in the Red Sox's exhibition game tonight in Pawtucket, R.I. Lefthander Zane Smith, who is on the disabled list with sore ribs, and righthander Tim VanEgmond, out with a strained right groin muscle, will pitch for the Red Sox. Smith is scheduled to come off the DL this week and will probably start Saturday against the Yankees. VanEgmond also could be activated this week. . . . Pitching rotation for the Red Sox-Orioles series: lefthander Rheal Cormier (1-0, 4.35) vs. righthander Ben McDonald (0-0, 1.50) Tuesday (7:05 p.m., NESN); righthander Erik Hanson (1-0, 0.79) vs. lefthander Sid Fernandez (0-0, 4.50) Wednesday (7:05, NESN); and righthander Aaron Sele (2-0, 3.00) vs. righthander Kevin Brown (2-0, 4.73) Thursday (7:05, Ch. 38).
Guy was just a couple of months younger than me and my height and weight (my weight in 1995 anyways). Sad story - sympathies to his family.

And former Sox phenom Andy Yount really cut up his hand when he unknowingly smashed a glass in it while visiting the cemetery.

He signed for me at Tiger Stadium when I was standing next to the bullpen on the RF foul line. It was right after he came up and had a couple of quick, impressive wins....I remember he started out hotter than hell with the Sox. He didn't want to sign, but I said something like "C'mon, who else here knows who Vaughn Eshelman is?"....I said the same thing to Joe Hudson that day, too.....

Very sad that he's gone that young.....RIP, Vaughn. I still have the ball....

I also remember looking a few months ago, seeing that there is someone named Eshelman playing in the minors for someone, I think out West. Was wondering if he was Vaughn's son.....and found out from where he was from that he couldn't have been.

I remember Eshelman's first two starts as mentioned in the Hartford Courant article. It was probably that third start against the Yankees that was the beginning of the end. He went down suddenly and completely. He was one of a bunch of players that Duquette - who seemed to be a genius then - rotated in and out of Boston that year. Off the top of my head I seem to remember a Jeff Florence and a Craig Shepard. One pitcher who came and put together a brilliant streak for most of that season was Tim Wakefield. They were so desperate for pitching that spring that they started Wakefield on two days rest. He went deep into both games and won them, I think.

Sorry to hear.
