Wow, he seemed like a young Roger Clemens a few years ago. What a flame out. Tough to be a Mets fan lately, that's for sure.

DFA question on whether he's 100% done with the Mets.

If you're Matt Harvey and you get DFA'd, and no team trades for or claims you, would it not then be wise (or at least worth a thought) of accepting a minor league reassignment for the chance to show improvement over the next couple months? So he could get a deal for next year. Otherwise, you're a free agent that no team wanted for about $4 million, which presumably means you're out of baseball for the rest of the year?
Answering in this thread. Of Matt Harvey refuses an assignment and becomes an FA, any team can sign him for the prorated league minimum (with the Mets paying the difference). There is a team out there willing to take that risk on Matt Harvey.

Right. Of course. Thanks.

I saw Harvey pitch a rehab stint for the Single-A New York-Penn League Brooklyn Cyclones last year. Went 3-4 innings and gave up a run on a couple of hits, IIRC - but did not look good in the process, either in terms of motion or body language. I was right behind the plate, and had a good view. He never seemed comfortable in his delivery and was in a high state of piss-off the whole time.

This would be a pretty serious reclamation project. Good for him and whomever takes him on if he pulls it off. Smells like a headcase though.

Chris O'Leary had been sounding the alarm about Harvey for years. His mechanics degenerated significantly from high school to the pros, and Harvey getting injured was the least surprising development ever. I wouldn't be surprised if his arm is toast at this point - he's been following the Mark Prior track for a long time.

At the league minimum; he will have more than a few to pick from. Low risk, high reward potential.

Some of this was already addressed, but the reason he likely passes through waivers is the ~$4.5 million still owed to him. I don't see any reason to presume he'd be out of baseball for the rest of the year, because once he passes through waivers the financial burden is then on the Mets. A rebuilding team can risk giving him the innings, but won't want to pay him several million to potentially win some meaningless games, and then watch him sign with a better team this winter. Once the Mets become responsible for all but the prorated minimum though, multiple teams would take the shot they can fix him and resign him.

It's really a disadvantage for him to accept reassignment with the Mets. Aside from the turmoil, hurt feelings, etc., he'd have to work things out in the minors for awhile before they'd consider putting him back on the 40-man roster. If a rebuilding team thinks their MLB pitching coach is the one who can fix him, he may avoid the minors altogether.

If you're team rebuilding you sign Harvey and hope he rebounds to something respectable so you can flip him for something at the trade deadline

Edit:. Typo

I guess we all overlooked the "trade your overpaid problem for someone else's overpaid problem" angle. I didn't even realize Mesoraco was still in the league.

Perfect trade IMO. The Mets have Red Sox level suck at catching, and the Reds have the worst starting staff in baseball. And Mesoraco's contract expires after this season.

I'd love to know how much cash went the Mets way. Mesoraco might have the worst contract in baseball; he signed a 4/$28 million deal after the 2014 season, and he's hit .194/.290/.317 in just 114 games since the signing. He's making $13 million this year.

The Reds agreed to pay the Mets $5,788,978 as part of the trade, which made the deal come out nearly even financially. Harvey is making $5,625,000 on a one-year contract. Mesoraco gets $13 million in the final season of a four-year, $28 million deal.

Thanks.

So instead of having Mesoraco taking up space on the bench, the Reds will have Harvey doing that for the same price. Worth a shot, I guess - they can flip him at the deadline if he manages to pull off a FIP mirage.

Not saying this is a bad deal for either team, but I was just amused to learn that Mesoraco's teams are now 0-20 this year when he plays.

Harvey with 4 exceedingly strong innings so far against the Dodgers, topping out at 95.8, only 2 Ks but the only baserunner a fly ball that should have been caught, 4 1 0 0 0 2 on 55 pitches.

If he is somehow magically immediately fixed, we might have a new frontrunner for Metsiest thing ever.

That was it for Harvey this time, he is not really stretched out.

And would possibly become a Yankees trade target, infuriating Queens.

It would be the Mets-iest thing ever, and I would love to see him come all the way back -- he was a ton of fun to watch pitch when he was right.

Unfortunately, I think he looked a lot better last night than the advanced numbers say he was. Although his velocity was better, he only got 2 swinging strikes (3.6% of his pitches -- and none on his fastball) and his .091 BABIP and 27% ground ball rate are not good long-term omens.

Last time Harvey was one of the best pitchers in baseball, in 2015, his fastball sat at 96/97 while getting 10% whiffs, and he paired it with an excellent slider (16% whiffs), changeup (17%), and curve (16%). This year, the pitch that's generating the most whiffs is his slider -- with just 8.53%. From everything I can tell, the Dark Knight is now Harvey Dent.

Injuries suck.

Good call, he is getting Belted today early on, SF is 7-12 against him so far and Brandon Belt just went deep, 2 7 3 3 0 0 as of now.
