Just signed a 5 year deal...

Details in a minute.

The 49ers and QB Jimmy Garoppolo have agreed to a five-year, $137.5 million contract, source says. The biggest deal in NFL history on a average-per-year basis.

Jesus Christ. Insane.

272 career attempts.

Of course the $137.5 million is a nonsense number. Need to figure out how much he's actually going to earn instead of have restructured 3 years from now.

I hope he has a shrine to Bill Belichick in his closet, right next to the elaborate apparatus he used to secretly deflate some footballs, get Brady suspended and get his chance to start.

If it’s that big, the guaranteed has to essentially be in the 75 million dollar range, otherwise he ain’t signing it.

No pressure, kid.

Wow. Just wow. Seems like an overpay.
But then I like at the deals given to Flacco and Stafford and become even more grateful the Pats have Brady.

Every QB contract for an established or high ceiling player will break a record. And we’ll sit here and issue smug denunciations — and wait for the next one.

Some day we’ll be in this boat. Hopefully. Because it will mean we have somebody good.

People are going to be really pissed if JG succeeds, aren’t they?

Cap has been exploding(28%higher than 201)and will keep rising throughout the deal Smart move to get it done and not let it get to the open market

My post was more about how great it is to have Brady and how lucky the Pats are to never have had to break the bank for him.

Yeah, I mean it’s a move they had to make. I sure bet they regret playing him those last 5 games, though. They probably feel more confident, but you gotta figure they were gonna take this approach and could have gotten it done for significantly less. Plus the draft equity.

Define succeeds. My wife loves the 49ers so I will be happy for her.
I hope Jimmy has a nice long career and never wins against the Pats.
I still don’t get how any Pats fan could have wanted Jimmy over Brady or thought both could have been kept (especially after seeing this deal).
I trust BB.

Tom has one last pay day coming, and now he's got a benchmark how much his back-up is worth.
I could definitely be wrong but I doubt Brady would ask for more than Jimmy just because that was his backup especially if it hurt the Pats. Just going on Brady’s past negotiations; don’t know why he would change now.

As long as he doesn’t Foles the Pats, I wish him all the best. I am happy with SF winning SBs that we are not playing in. He was an inspired draft choice (despite some grousing here), worked hard, kept his mouth shut and was an exemplary Patriot. He reflects well on this franchise.

Why would they? Their rebuilding project went forward by a full 12 months by playing him.

Not gonna happen. He’s going to get something like 3/50 added on to his existing deal. He’s always taken less and it’ll take him through age 44-45.

Why? They were always going to treat him like their QB of the future. Unless you think more FA will be attracted there because of him over more money, I don’t see it. They have less cap space now because they played him. Of course, they’re still in fantastic shape overall.

SSS but all he did in a few weeks was digest the playbook, go out there and kick ass. That’s impressive.

I think John Lynch really gets it, and Kyle is a good coach.

It might have been worth it given the way its juiced the fanbase in SF. His jersey was the 25th best selling of the year despite being there only 2 months.

Thank God. As a Niners fan I was borderline legit worried about the conspiracy theory re: him going back to the Pats once Brady retires. They have the cap space and it's not my money.

The conspiracy theory was bs, floated by Bill Polian among others, which is kind of appropriate. SF always had the leverage. They simply could have tagged him. This is better outcome for you.

Goes the Peyton route, to hell with your cap space.
SF has plenty of cap space. They can afford it. Seems a pretty even deal although lot of risk for SF.

Can't wait to see what Cousins gets.

Edit: 74 is less guarantee than I would have guessed. Need to see more of the details though.

My only worry is that I think some of the winning at the end of the year could be fools’ gold.
It isn’t my money, but I would have preferred a deal around $20M per and take the savings and get more offensive talent.
The defense is really solid. Could use some more pieces on the offensive side of the ball.

It would be good to see him play a full season without getting hurt first before wringing one's hands. He was the starter for 1 1/2 games for the Pat before he got hurt, else he would have gotten 4 starts. He played 5 games last year due to the timing of the trade. He looked GREAT and they won but this is far from a slam dunk for anyone.

I'm a niners fan too. I was worried we would franchise tag him. I don't think franchise tags work out in the long term. Look at the Cousins situation. I'm glad he's signed and can move forward with football without dealing with future contract worries. Lynch is looking like a fine hire. I was in Atlanta for the NFCCG and that seems like a century ago. I remember thinking how the future was so bright for the harbaugh era. Then it went dark and pitiful quick. It's nice to see some light

And showed absolutely zero signs that what transpired in SF was a fluke, while the Patriots hope that Brady is the first quarterback in history to be good past 40. Thankfully 2001 Belichick didn't look at Tommy No Quarters and start Huard, or 24 Quarters Brady and go back to Bledsoe.

Hopefully, though, Brady can have a few age-defying seasons while that 2nd round pick develops.

Do you know enough about the media that regularly covers the 49ers to suggest that "if"?
No, why?

At least two "ifs" here: one if source is legitimate (apparently it is) and two since K is not finalized, perhaps his information is incomplete.

At any rate, I saw it on the web and thought people might be interested.

Because unless you know the validity of the source, there's no reason for you to doubt it in a post. It would have taken you less than a minute to find out who the reporter was.

Good for them, they got their guy, but man, things literally couldn't have broken better for Jimmy if it were a movie. He gets dealt before the season ends to a team in an awesome city, with a massive amount of cap room, and nowhere to go but up. And instead of riding the pine for the rest of the year, SF gives him a chance, and while he wasn't some Canton-Bound prodigy IMO, he was pretty good, and of course, he piled up some wins. The end result? The richest contract in NFL history. Not too bad for a 2nd round kid from Eastern Illinois who two months ago had played a total of 6 quarters of NFL football. That's the shit dreams are made of.

Doesn't San Fran still have like 4 billion dollars left on the cap? So if Jimmy does end up being a legit stud, they are actually in a great position to load up the roster with the help he needs. Gonna be interesting to see what they do in free agency, draft time, etc. They have to be one of the most active organizations between now and opening day.

The bigger doubt was whether the had the contract details correct, particularly given how complex these deals are and the reporting that the contract hadn't been finalized yet.

And given that Schefter is reporting a $90MM guaranteed amount, perhaps the "if" was correct?

His play in San Francisco has not surprised most. Who didn't do a double take when they announced they were dealing him for a second? Breaking news. Potential franchise QBs are hard to find. Ask the Jets, Browns, Dolphins, Bears, etc etc
