Granderson on a one-year contract is probably a good deal for Toronto. Should safely remove them from the JDM discussion.
Why in the world would it? At this stage, he's a fourth outfielder and it's a one-year deal. Toronto would be looking at Martinez as a Bautista replacement.

Teoscar Hernandez, who put up a .371 wOBA in 95 PAs down the stretch, is their Bautista replacement. He's not a sure bet, but they seem invested in giving him a shot, and they should.

Pearce/Pillar/Hernandez/Granderson/Carrera in the outfield, Smoak at first, and Morales at DH. Looks pretty set.

Per Morosi, Blue Jays acquire yet another outfielder, Randal Grichuk, from the Cards.

Grichuk has yet to put it all together, but he’s shown elite batted ball rates when he makes contact and is kind of a sleeper. He’d been complaining about being a 4th outfielder in STL; I imagine Toronto gives him a chance to start.

Probably more moves coming for them, as their outfield depth now includes Pearce, Pillar, Hernandez, Granderson, Carrera, Grichuk, Alford and Pompey.

Strange that they signed a pretty cooked Granderson, maybe they didn’t know they could get Grichuk then.

I’d bet Granderson’s worth $5M next year if they play him enough and protect him against lefties. Figure they’d pin him to Pearce for a sneaky cheap .850 OPS platoon. His awful two months with the Dodgers was deflated by a .153 BABIP. Still hit the ball pretty hard and his walk rate’s well above average.

Did not think he’d earn that 4/$60M with the Mets, but alas.

I suspect they are planning a trade. Also Granderson had a decent year lastbyear until traded. Being back in the AL East and its hitter friendly parks, not to mention Orioles pitching, should help him

He provided 87.6 million value per FG. More surplus than JD gave us in 5 years. So I guess he did

Edit-misread your comment. I guess we agree

Giants sign Austin Jackson.

It really is stunning how little movement there has been on the FA market. When does the dam break? Feb. 1? There has to be a breaking point.

Cubs sign Chris Gimenez.

Who cares? Well, he was Yu Darvish's personal catcher in Texas, and they're reportedly still tight. So: maybe something will happen now!

full deal:
The #Brewers have acquired OF Christian Yelich from Miami in exchange for OF Lewis Brinson, OF Monte Harrison, INF Isan Diaz and RHP Jordan Yamamoto.

Brinson OF BA #18
Harrison OF BA #75

Brewers still have
Hiura 2B BA #47
Woodruff RHP BA #61
Burnes RHP BA #74
Phillips OF BA #80

Pretty fair deal overall. Brinson being a bust or living up to his potential is the big question.

No, and they have Thames. They need to trade a couple of outfielders, they have six or seven now.

Don't sleep on Diaz. The Marlins did well here.

Castro has to be next on the list to go. There's only 5 guys now making $7M or more. Chen is virtually untradeable, Prado has little value, and Ziegler and Tazawa are decent MR and might have some value. Castro is the next best chip. Realmuto, Bour and Straily are all Arb-1 and are estimated (collectively) at almost $10M between the three, so no rush to deal any of them.

Not sure who is going to trade for him unless MIA picks up some of his deal, he has 2/24 left on his deal (including a $1M buyout in 2020) and was the worst defensive 2B in the AL last year (http://sabr.org/sdi/2017-final), he's averaged 1.3 bWAR in the last three seasons.

They wouldnt have to eat much. His value is in his bat and he has averaged 1.5 WAR the past 2 years. Basically playing to his salary at 8 million/WAR. Also his AAV is lower which is important to teams having LT concerns

He wont get much in return

Frankly the Red Sox should be interested given Pedroias health concerns and the need for a back up SS with power and a guy whose bat would be oK at DH. He could also play 3B if needed and spell Devers against tough LHPers

Cain's deal with the Brewers is for 5 years and $80 million.
Backloaded with deferred money. I would think a 4-5 WAR player could do better

$13MM in 2018, $14MM in 2019, $15MM in 2020, $16MM in 2021 and $17MM in 2022 And 1 million a year from 2023-2027

I estimate the NPV at 14.5 million per year

Just saw this, Castro has barely played SS since the Cubs bumped him for Addison Russell in Aug 2015, he played 20 innings there in two seasons with NY. He has never played an inning at 3B and he is not good at 2B as I mentioned above, Nunez seems like a better and cheaper idea in this role for BOS but I welcome a Castro regime in BOS. :)

Nah, spring training doesn't really matter for hitters, they need like, what, a couple weeks to get their timing down? Pitchers can throw on their own programs for awhile before they ramp up to needing to throw to actual hitters. These guys can hold out until March, I'm sure.

But the question is, will they get more money in March than they will right now?

Is Moustakas all of a sudden going to get a five year offer? I just don’t see it.

While unlikely, any sort of injury immediately kills their ability to get any long term deal, especially at an increased rate.
