Incredible. The Manti Teo story was bizarre a few years back but how did this go on for as long as it did? There are some very gullible and stupid people out there. Quite sad actually.
When I read about something like this, I get around to wondering just how many people are behind all of SoSH's posters. A dozen?

Volin continues to befuddle. Gronk's incentive-laden contract is bad for the team. The only way this makes sense is if Gronkowski is deciding how much he plays:

https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/patriots/2017/12/05/rob-gronkowski-contract-runs-counter-patriots-needs/h9HFpOV0cZSJ5XG0NZ5fkK/story.html

Yeah, Ben, he was demonstratively pleading for the TD because of the incentives, not because he really did catch the ball. Absent incentives, he wouldv'e just walked away and said "touchdown smutchdown, who cares?"

I sorta get what he's saying here: would you rather go to nine Super Bowls or six. But he's so dense, it's not funny.

Since you dont get to decide before the game if you're going to win or lose, I'd guess most pro football players would rather be 0-10 in Super Bowls than 0-0.

Saying 5-1 is better than 5-4 is like saying you’d rather finish 3rd (or worse) than 2nd.

Yup, it’s the same as saying that Montana never losing a SB and winning four is superior to winning five and losing two. It completely ignores the fact that it’s more impressive to lose in the SB than to lose in the playoffs, or worse not make the playoffs at all. The only way that statement makes any sense is if your entire knowledge of the NFL consists of who played in the SB every year.

Whatever, he’s a troll that likely has plenty of people on Twitter ready to react.

Montana played for the Niners 12 years, started for the most part the last 10; won the SB 4 times, so let's compare the 6 years he was the full time starter to the 12 years Brady has been (I'm excluding 79 and 80 in the case of Montana; 00 and 08 in the case of Brady).

In those 6 years Montana missed the playoffs once and won two (yes, two) playoff games. In two of the losses his team was held to a single field goal.

In Brady's 12 years he missed the playoffs once, won 8 playoff games (pro rated to Montana's number of years that's still twice as many) and made the Super Bowl twice. I think all of us can come up with a list of who we think are/were pretty good quarterbacks who haven't done as well as that. He had a few bad games in there, but nothing as bad as Montana pair of 3's.

I think this proves what an idiot Volin is.

Hurley with another great article.

The other major difference in the Cassel-Garoppolo situations is that the Patriots didn’t go into the 2008 season with Cassel’s contract on their mind at all. They probably figured they’d re-sign him for peanuts after his rookie contract expired following the 2008 season, during which Brady would probably tickle that record of 50 touchdown passes once again.

If Belichick had used his cheatin’ crystal ball that summer to foresee that Brady would have suffered a complete tear of his left knee just seven minutes into the season, then Belichick surely would have signed Cassel to a contract extension which would have fetched him great offers from around the league following the 2008 season. But the world doesn’t work like that; you work with reality.

And reality, in that case, meant the Patriots had to apply the franchise tag on Cassel in order to salvage some of his value as an asset on the market. And that huge, wondrous, great return that the Patriots got? It was … a second-round pick. And that’s after also including Mike Vrabel, a defensive starter of 14 games in ’08, a three-time Super Bowl winner with the team, and a key veteran leader in the locker room.

So … a straight-up trade of eight weeks of the rights of Garoppolo fetched the Patriots a second-round pick.

And a trade of Cassel making franchise money plus Vrabel fetched the Patriots … a second-round pick.

I got like 3 minutes in and just thought, "if the guys filming this don't give a shit, why should I?" Between the content and the unskippable ad before it, I think that'll be the last time I click on a Deadspin video for a while.
Interesting, I didn't get an ad. I did get terrible content though. Which is a shame because with the right talent (and more than 5 cents of production value) that is a great concept.

Gary Tanguay says he has received info on the Pats gameplan from multiple sources. Tanguay has revealed that James White is going to see increased playing time early in the game with Dion Lewis being on the field less than we have come to expect.

I started writing a reply to that, but all it boiled down to was "Is Tanguay an idiot?". And I think that there is overwhelming evidence, even prior to this, to support that

No idea, but I do legitimately feel bad for him. He seems to truly enjoy it and his interviews get me pretty hyped for the upcoming season

The Athletic feels like The National all over again. They're putting together a stellar roster of writers, but it's hard to believe paying all those high-level writers and editors is going to be sustainable.

I don't know, this is a way different media environment than 1990. Wasn't the National's ultimate failing that they weren't really offering something the audience wanted, that is local sports coverage better than the local paper? They're pretty close to doing that now, with newspapers being on their knees.

Plus the clean web experience and subscription costs make it different than Grantland, which was also an attempt to recreate The National.

Emma Span and James Mirtle are pretty big gets for baseball and hockey coverage.

Roche is literally the *only* sideline/stands/dugout "reporter" that ever brought anything to any broadcast Ive watched in the last 20 years or so, when he had the Sox gig on one of their broadcast channels. Maybe he had more freedom, but now its little more than rehashing everything you missed on the pregame show. Even if that's discussing the segment where today's starting pitcher talks about his good health, even if that pitcher dropped dead the inning before.
Roche knows how to do interviews.

I couldn't find a thread on Steve Buckley exclusively, so I'll post this here (mods feel free to move it if I'm just an idiot), but I am very disappointed with this article from Steve today.

http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/columnists/steve_buckley/2018/02/buckley_david_price_is_the_wrong_person_to_teach_jd_martinez

I am aware of the story from last year with Price and Buckley, but this is the type of negative article that makes the Boston media look terrible. It was just last week that Price stood up in front of reporters and finally took some responsibility for his actions. Rather than giving him a chance to let his actions live up to his words, or even maybe, I don't know, writing an article about JD Martinez, we get this drivel about Price and his problems here.

We couldn't even go 48 hours after the Martinez deal without getting a negatively slanted article about the Red Sox. This time after signing a big ticket Free Agent to a reasonable deal, that should improve the team.

I'm not usually one for coddling highly paid grown men, but stuff like this really makes me see their side clearer.

NFL just put out a release: NFL Net & Fox will team up to simulcast live coverage of Rounds 1-3 of 2018 NFL Draft. ESPN2 will supplement ESPN's Round 1 coverage with a separate college-themed production, plus there will be a simulcast of ESPN's coverage of Rounds 4-7 on ABC.

I understand the draft is a big thing in the NFL off-season schedule, but does it really warrant five network saturation coverage? Holy shit.

I don't care as much about the NFL as I used to and I rarely watch college football, so I'm not the target audience here, but this is nothing but overkill. It's typical of the league to find something that people like and super size it to such a degree that they suck all of the enjoyment out of it.

You like football? Well here's five days worth of football every week!
You like the draft? Well we're expanding it to to four days over five channels!
You like the offseason? Well guess what friend, it never stops to take a breath!

But it makes them money so what the fuck do I know?

Not to turn this into another NFL ratings thread, but I think this hits home for a lot of us. It was cool having a couple extra Saturday games in December once the college season was over... and it was cool having the traditional Thanksgiving games... and it was cool having a special Thursday night opener... but then TNF every week became too much.

And the draft was always fun on Saturday for rounds 1-3... and they cut down on time to pick which was a great move... but then making it prime time over two days was overkill.

As you said, the league doesn't know when to pull back, and I think it has impacted viewership.

+1.

NFL has irresistible impulse to big foot every other sport. By claiming every possible day in the week, then by trying to claim weeks and months during which it was traditionally pretty dormant. That backfired with traditionalists like me. A game has to be pretty special to get my attention on Monday and Thursday nights — and often on Sunday night. One reaches a point where less is more. I’m well beyond it.

Trollin Volin:

https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/patriots/2018/04/27/newonfoot/tjEshkR0mmLZS5IwaTuSfJ/amp.html?__twitter_impression=true

The cynical explanation is that Belichick is trying to obscure the return for Garoppolo because he knows how lopsided of a deal it was against the Patriots. Instead of taking a player with the 43rd pick, or even two players after a trade, Belichick keeps kicking the can down the road, trying to confuse us as to the real return on Garoppolo. No. 43 became Nos. 51 and 117. No. 51 became No. 105 and a future second-rounder. No. 117 and 63 were used to draft Dawson. Confusing, right? Just how Belichick and the Patriots want it.

What neither Volin nor almost anyone else seems to understand is that to Belichick, "the return for JG" is not a thing. JG is gone. It stopped being "the return for JG" once the ink was dry on the trade. The stuff they got in the trade became "stuff the Patriots have." Then they traded that stuff for other stuff. Is there anyone with a functioning brain who actually thinks that BB cares whether the stuff he trades away cam from a trade, or whether they fell from Scott Zolak's ass.

Volin's supposition isn't "cynical." Its moronic. It is fitting though, that "supposition" and "suppository" come from the same Latin root.

Agree that Volin's argument is utterly moronic for the reasons stated above, but, also - it's not "confusing." It's actually very easy to track, which Volin himself proved. It took all of three short sentences to describe exactly what the current status of picks derived from the JG trade is.

Edited to add: Also, there's this gem:

And how about that young quarterback they need to groom behind a 41-year-old Tom Brady? As of now it’s still just Brady and Brian Hoyer on the roster, and Brady’s clock is ticking ever faster.
I don't think Volin understands how clocks work.

"sunk costs" are one of the things in economics that so many people get wrong.

Belichick, of course, has a degree in economics.

Not local, but I couldn't find an "angry media type shakes fist at cloud" thread.

Braves announcers Joe Simpson and Chip Caray made a huge point last night of criticizing the Dodgers batting practice attire. And this wasn't a situation where they had thrown to their version of Guerin Austin for a cute report about something that happened during BP (a fan hit with Matt Kemp or something) and they made an off-the-cuff comment about what they saw. This was, in the middle of the fifth inning, a rant about how "unprofessional" it was for Chase Utley to hit in a tee shirt, no socks, and his pant legs hiked up to his knees. A rant complete with accompanying video so clearly they had planned for it.

There's a video and transcript in this article.

Joe Maddon napalmed A-Rod on his Yu Darvish take from Sunday Night Baseball. This is from a couple of hours ago.
https://670thescore.radio.com/cubs-joe-maddon-blasts-alex-rodriguez-yu-darvish-criticism

"I was really shocked by the whole diatribe, in a sense a soliloquy," Maddon said on the Bernstein & McKnight Show on 670 The Score on Tuesday afternoon. "It really came off to me as plastic and probably rehearsed in advance. It was definitely a contrived situation.
"What I just said to you illustrates exactly how I feel about this. It's one of those situations that a guy like him (Rodriguez) has to be careful, because now he can really sully his reputation in other clubhouses based on this irresponsible moment."
It's about as angry as Hippie-Joe gets.
