Nook Color: sneaky Android tablet

I'm using that kernel and will check out Mad Murdock's tweaks.

The tablet tweaks have been merged into the CM7 release (I assume... I installed nightly 37 (or 38?) and it was there).

I'm pretty sure the stable CM7 release has the tablet tweaks (settings>cyangen settings>tablet tweaks).

Can I just upgrade from my current version of CM7 or do I have to do another full install?

You have to do a new install, the tweaks are rolled into cm7. But I have installed a few cm7 versions so far without clearing cache or data and have been fine. The only weird thing that happened to me was I lost WiFi (just did a hard reset) and my widgets (which are the desktop visualiser ones in my screen grab up thread).

This should work for MLB at Bat. In fact it should work for any non-white-listed device, so I should've posted this in the MLB At Bat thread, but fuck it.

http://forum.xda-dev...99#post12732499

Of course because of the Fox-based blackout, I haven't been able to test it yet myself
I've got the option to stream, but am getting stuck with a white screen. I saw a few others with this issue, but no fix.

The only thing I can think of is that I haven't seen anyone with CM7 Stable saying it is working, only Nightly 37. It seems odd that it would work in a nightly released two days earlier, but not the Stable, but I may try that when I get home.

Still, progress! Hopefully there will still be a season worth watching by the time I get it working...

Just wanted to say I am generally incompetent with technology and I followed the Huskermania CM7 video and did it without a lot of issue. So far the biggest issue is the firefix browser isn't all that great with the touchscreen but everything else is fantastic so far.

Dolphin mini is the best browser for the Nook imo. Firefox is awful.

I use CM7 with the Tablet Tweaks now. Its great and was even easier to install than Nookie Froyo.
Finally got around to installing this and it's pretty amazing. Tablet tweaks are great and I picked up about 400 points on my Quadrant score. This thing keeps getting better and better.

I'm running CM7 Nightly 41 (which includes the Tablet Tweaks) and Dalingrin's OC Kernel 18C and getting ~2600 on Quadrant now. I don't know how they keep doing it but I couldn't be happier with a $250 device.

Apparently the official upgrade to Froyo is available on B&N's website. This will probably break root.

I've only read one review, and it wasn't glowing. .apk's are blocked (not sure if that's standard for a non-rooted NC), and there's about 130 or so apps available, with some of them being for sale, although the review said they were pricey.

I'm hoping the database change I made blocks the update from installing automatically, but if someone updates, I'd like to hear what's what with it (including if you did any of the auto-update blocking stuff).

Anyone know if there is a Kindle app in the B&N store? Also if I bought books for the Nook and I have to erase the device how do I recover books I bought?

The books save to your account. You can buy a book and then log in and it will download the book to whatever device you are using. I have the same books on my phone and my Nook.

I finally gave in and bought one. Had the CM7 ROM and dalingrin kernel on within a couple of hours. I've been having a bit of trouble with the wireless being flaky, otherwise everything is running great.

There's some discussion here about the causes of flaky WiFi but no definitive answers yet. I'm running the 4/24 kernel at 1300 MHz and have not had any WiFi issues.

Later in that same thread people have extracted the the flash player out of the B&N Froyo update that apparently has HW acceleration for those interested. It's too much effort for me but if you watch a lot of YouTube it is apparently much better than 10.2 from the Market.

I understand the highly unlikely nature it would be there but before I go an unroot I want to make sure it would support it. I may keep my Nook rooted because I use it for both ereaders.

You're going to have to wait until 1.2 gets rooted to be able to install the kindle app on the stock ROM.

Alternatively, you could install a custom ROM (like CM7) that you can then download both the nook and kindle apps. You lose some functionality with the nook app (children's books and magazine subscriptions) over the stock reader.

1.2 is rooted, and the kindle app does work in it. The rooting process is described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051235

Not everything works yet. I'd wait for an updated autonooter.

As of yesterday's Nook for Android update you can now get magazines and children's book. That's one bit of functionality you now won't lose by going to a custom ROM.

Children's books: I tried downloading a couple I have to the new nook app on CM7, and I got a dialog box saying something like "format not supported". I'll try again.

There's a beta CM7 with a new kernal floating around that is trying to address the Sleep Of Death issue (I'm not 100% sure what the sleep of death issue is... something like it doesn't wake back up after going into deep sleep... so deep sleep is turned off so there's a bit more battery drain with CM7 than stock).

Nothing that runs on the stock Nook app that comes with the Nook color will run in the Nook for Android app as far as I know. I think you need to get the directly from the Nook for Android app to get the correct format. It's one of the reasons several people on XDA site for running Stock on internal and CM7 on SD; they don't want to lose all of the books they have already purchased.

If you want to know more about the CM7 beta the XDA forum on the topic is here.

I am one of those people (cm7 on sd card, stock on internal, dual boot menu to choose internal or sdcard rom when booting). You can still download previously purchased books to the nook for android app.

I tried to download preivously purchased children's books in CM7 with the Nook for Android app for children's books I've already purchased (and can see in the Nook for Android app), but they will not download . I can download to Nook for Android app on CM7 other non-children's books I've purchased via the stock Nook app and my desktop on B&N.com. Are you able to download children's books to the nook for android app?

Also... It looks like I didn't finish my thought about the beta cm7.... Until the SOD is fixed, I'll probably keep CM7 on the sdcard and not internal. I do have it on my to-do list to try and reverse where each is saved when the new CM7 kernal gets implemented into the nightlies/stable releases.

I don't have children so I never tried with the children's books. Maybe I misread the press release and it's only magazines that they enabled and not yet children's books. I'll see if I can find a free one to try on my Nook when I get home.

I wasn't able to get this to work with Froyo, but this did (courtesy of phiredrop):

Edit your build.prop (/system/build.prop) as follows

ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.brand=tmobile
ro.product.name=vision
ro.product.device=vision
ro.product.board=vision
ro.product.manufacturer=HTC

Reboot
Enjoy Netflix!

I finally got around to installing CM7 and now just added the Netflix and Hulu functionality following the Huskermania videos. This is pretty awesome. But I'm realizing that I probably should have overclocked it, but haven't yet. Is there a way to do that now that CM7 is already installed or would I have to go back to the stock ROM and then reload CM7?

For $1.50 or so this gave me a significant volume boost. Not sure how good it is for the device to max out the volume like this, but I don't really care. Needless to say Netflix is night and day better now that I can actually hear it without headphones. Setting it as loud as it will allow makes the sound level about par with an iPad. Not too fuzzy either.

No you don't have to do any of that. Once you have found the kernel you want to use to overclock just:

save it to your SD card
reboot the device into recovery
go to install zip and find the kernel on the SD card
install it
reboot

Done.

I use a program called SetCPU that lets me set the speed and manage the overclocking. It's a few bucks and well worth it imo.

I installed CM7 Tuesday night and its miles better than Froyo. I didn't realize Netflix was possible though I just figured it wasn't supported on this, I should have known better. Considering I'm posting from the plane right now, that would have been awesome. I'll definitely use the Huskermania videos, they are ridiculously easy to follow.

Regardless it makes travelling a breeze.

More awesomeness! Just a few dumb questions:

How should I determine what kernel I want to use? Is there one you recommend for a dummy? And I assume once I figure that out, it's something I could find on XDA?

I apologize because I don't have my nook with me at work to experiment, but how do I reboot into recovery? Is that an option when holding down the power button?

How would I go about managing the overclocking? Are there certain instances or certain apps where it should run slower?

And finally, one more unrelated question. I can't seem to get the nook app to access the books (epub format) that I have stored on my SD card. Is there some trick to get it to recognize these?

Thanks again for all the help and advice Foulkey!

From what I've read, SetCPU doesn't really play nice with CM7. But, CM7 has an overclocking option built in if your kernal is built for it: go into the settings and find the performance menu (a dialog box will pop up about dragons), and you can overclock there. I'd suggest not clicking "set on boot" until you're sure that overclocking works.... but once you're sure, set it and then it'll overclock on reboot.

BBA: go onto XDA and find dalingrin's kernal thread, the original post will have all his kernals. just make sure to pick the one for CM7... and read through the thread because there's a bunch of changes going on now with the kernals and CM7 (some of the nightlies lately have been broke).

Which CM7 did you install? and where... internal or on the sdcard?

I think you can boot into recovery via Rom Manager app... I think the option to boot into recovery via the power button menu doesn't work.

Edit: before flashing the new kernal... backup!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction on the kernel.
I installed CM7 following the instructions on the Huskermania youtube vid. The link for the download is here. It says the version is "update-cm-7.0.2-encore"
I installed it on the internal.

Edit: What are you guys using to backup? Titanium looks like it should be good. Just want to make sure there's not something else I should be using.

I'm pretty sure Titanium only backs up apps and app data (I'm not 100% sure though, they might have changed that... but for some reason I really think it's just apps+data).

What you want to do is a nandroid backup. when you get into recovery (clockworkmod), you'll see an option for backup. this will take a snapshot of all the OS and app+data of your nook, including kernal. so if something goofs up when trying to install a new kernal... just restore the previous nandroid backup (through clockworkmod recovery) and your nook will look exactly like it did when you backed it up.

I have titanium backup as well, and it does periodic (2 times a week) backups of my apps+data. there's even a way to sync it with a dropbox account so all the backup files get saved to the cloud automatically. I turned this off because I tired of having all this on my work and home computers. In addition to the scheduled TI backups, I also created a task in google calendar to do a nandroid backup once a month. I then copy and paste these backups onto an external drive on my home computer (for both my Incredible and my Nook). Either keep a log of what you backed up and the backup folder name (clockworkmod gives it a time/date name) or just rename the backup folder to something so you can figure out what that backup was.

Use this kernel (the emmc one). Just load it from ROM Manager, reboot and then go into settings -> Cyanagenmod Settings -> Performance -> CPU. I use 1200 and On Demand and set on boot checked and I couldn't be happier. Be sure not to use any kernel later than the 5/13 one. It's for newer bootloaders and CM7 versions that are still in beta.

I just realized MLB.TV is working. Under the video tab on the app, there is a bar that says "watch live game" or something like that. Tap it and it works! The resolution isn't great, but it's certainly watchable.

Bah! I bricked it. Not sure wtf I did wrong. After my success with MLB.TV, I decided to give the overclocking a go. Downloaded the emmc kernel that jerca linked to above, direct to the sd card. Went into ROM manager and created a backup. Once that was done, I rebooted into recovery from ROM manager and unzipped the kernel. Installed it and then rebooted. I got the "touch the future of reading" screen, it flashed, then only displayed a dimly backlit black screen, waited several minutes and nothing happened. Hard shut down holding the power button, then turned back on and the same thing happened with the black screen. Is my only recourse to unroot back to the original stock ROM and then re-route/install CM7 etc.? Fortunately there's a huskermania video for that... but it looks like it's going to take some time. I've got a bunch of stuff to do tomorrow so probably won't get to this until tomorrow evening at the earliest. I'd appreciate any advice or ideas in the meantime. Thanks.

BBA, I had the same thing happen. I flashed one of the older kernels (I think I grabbed the last April one) and it recovered fine, didn't have to reinstall the os at all. Just pull out the SD card and copy the kernel zip to it, then put it back in and boot into recovery (hold down both the power and "n" button when powering it on). Run the kernel zip and reboot, everything should be fine.

EDIT: Here's the link to the kernel that worked for me (use the emmc one).

If not, just copy the cm7 and google apps zips to your SD card (if they aren't already there), boot to recovery, and run the 2 zips, it will reinstall the cm7 os and kernel without wiping your apps or settings. I did this a couple of times before finding the kernel that would work for me.

That worked. Thank you very much SFiC, you rock!

Edit: Found that I couldn't get into the market after flashing this kernel and that AtBat and a few other apps weren't working. Did a bit of searching through the xda thread and found that I needed to reflash google apps. That did the trick. Only problem I'm having now that the Netflix tweak was undone. When I try to redo it (change build.prop fields to Nexus S and samsung), it won't let me save. Oh well, I'll see if I can figure out that one tomorrow ...

Edit 2: Has anyone changed the u-boot settings to try flashing later kernels? Is it worth messing with?

Sorry about what happened to you. I've been running that kernel for some time without issues and it's really the only stable OC kernel out there. Dalingrin is one of the prime devs for the Nook on CM7. I've also been running the new bootloader without issues but it doesn't give you anything unless you want to upgrade to the newest beta CM7 and OC kernel. It does get you a "Read Forever" instead of a "Touch the future of reading" message at boot but doesn't add any functionality. Either way, it creates a backup of the current bootloader when you flash it using CWM so you can always revert back. Also, due to the ability to boot from SD it's nearly impossible to brick your Nook. Unless you screw up the recovery you can just hold power and the Nook button together until it reboots and you'll be taken to recovery where you can flash/format whatever you need to get back to a functional system. I've used this a lot as I have one of the units where WiFi won't work on the the new nightly's with the new kernel.

I've got the Netflix workaround working again. Simply had to uninstall and reinstall es file explorer and then the changes to builld.prop took. The best part is that this spoof also allows MLB.TV to work. This thing is flying now and everything is working as I had it before overclocking. Pretty sweet.

Edit: quadrant score = 2217

Nope, and there likely won't ever be. Google hasn't released the source code for HC and likely won't until Ice Cream Sandwich is released this fall in which case everyone will just use the ICS source. That being said, there are versions of HC build off of the SDK but all reports are that they are pretty buggy and are missing some things (like Video playback and flash). That being said, here are links to the two HC build being developed by the CM7 devs.

HC SDK
HC Preview

And here's a link to the discussion about 3.1

I just picked up a used Nook Color to root and make it into a tablet, and noticed it is 1.2 version. I've read everywhere and all through this thread and now I think I have confused myself overall since I see you have to do a CMW card, etc. etc. Where is the best place to follow step-by-step instructions so I can turn this into a nice little Android table?

I have found these: Are these recommended? http://forum.xda-dev...50&postcount=19

It confuses me since it is 1.2. Anyone want some beer money? I can ship it to them.

Thanks!

If you PM me I'll give an address to ship to and I'll do it for you (I've done 5 so far myself). Alternately, you could follow the instructions here. You don't even have to worry about rooting the stock software if you're not worried about being able to easily go back to it. If you just want to go to CM7 (or some other ROM) you can just insert a properly imaged SD card and install the ROM from that. It's a bit more tricky but if you're pretty computer savvy then it's not that hard to figure out. Also, it's pretty impossible to brick a Nook if you know how to build a bootable SD card (instructions to do so are in the link above).

Now you can get bootable Android loaded on an SD card for the Nook:

Nook2Android:

Available in three sizes and prices ($34.99 for 8 gigabytes, $49.99 for 16 GB, and $89.99 for 32 GB), the SD card plugs directly into the Nook, letting the device boot into Android mode. A boot menu gives users the choice of loading Android or the Nook operating system, while removing the card will automatically transform the Nook back into its normal e-reader state.

In Android mode, Nook owners can use the built-in Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n to surf the Web and run various preinstalled apps, such as Gmail, Facebook, and Pandora, according to Nook2Android. Apps can be downloaded and installed directly from the Android Market. The company also promises that using the cards won't affect the Nook's internal memory or void the warranty from B&N.
It could be an interesting and/or easy way to make the Nook a tablet.

Anyone tried upgrading to CM 7.1.0-RC yet on their nook. I'm seeing the option to update, but not sure if I want to go from a stable version to a release candidate.
