False modesty doesn't suit you. I'd say the Dodgers, Cubs and Yankees -- as it stands -- are the only teams with a chance to win the WS
Come on, you know better than this. If I was a betting man (I am not, I vowed to never again do it long ago and have held to that), I would take the field right now against those three.

I love ya E5, but you’re overly maudlin about this. You just said the AL is done and dusted for next 5 years?
Never said 5 five years. I specifically said "as it stands." And, as it stands, there is no reason to believe that any team other than NY will be the AL team in the WS

I hope he under-reacts.

Barring injury, this substantially nails the season for NY (I'm curious how Las Vegas will treat this). The 2017 Yankees were one game away from the WS. The 2018 Yankees are substantially better.
Wasn't this the consensus opinion of the the 2016 Red Sox offseason too? How'd that work out? I guess I just don't understand why everyone just assumes that all of the MFY kids will repeat or improve on their seasons. Sox had dropoffs from nearly every player last year for not very explicable reasons. Why isn't that just as likely for Judge, Bird, etc.? Sure, it's a big move, but it's not the death knell for the AL East that everyone is making out to be.

Edit: Yeah, what EE said, but in way more words.

The same Bird who had a whopping 147 ABs last year?

There are more playoff teams now, still a shorter first round, harder for the same team to win year in and year out. The Yankees can win 100 games next season, they’d still have to face a hot wild card team in a short five game series. See: Cleveland, NY last October.

17 months ago (July 2016), it looked like NY was literally years behind BOS and they were fucked until at least 2019. Things have changed shockingly fast, and they can change fast again in the other direction just as easily.

I mean, I'm betting against the Yankees there, but since it is close to nothing, sure, you're on.

So, I have you on the record as hoping the Yankees don't win the World Series ... sweet!

Jose Devers and Jorge Guzman are the prospects.
Cashman is trolling Dombrowski with this, right?

I don’t know. Lots of Sox folks around here seemed to have more fun when Yankees were not just good but *seemed* to be invincible.

Bring it on.

Can’t wait for Sale vs. MFYs and a Kimbrel vs Judge, Stanton, Sanchez 9th inning in a 2-1 game this summer. It’s why we watch guys/gals.
Yeah, this is where I ended up after an hour or so of moping around. Betts, Benintendi and Devers driving a late rally in a 1-0 game to take a lead for Sale who just finished the 8th inning with Kimbrel warming is where it's at.

In retrospect people talk about the Red Sox as the clearly superior team in 2004, but at the time it certainly felt like the Yankees were a juggernaut that couldn't be stopped.

If the Red Sox land a big bat like Martinez, all the better. But let's get the season started. I'm fucking amped up.

Tanaka and Gray in my mind remain questions for different reasons.
Severino seems legit.
CC is CC.

IMO the rotation is neither deep nor overwhelming.

In my mind its their Achilles heel.

YMMV
It's definitely weaker than their bullpen or lineup, but they also have a bunch of guys potentially ready to step in if needed. Anyway, Cashman isn't done now, this deal I think will push him into some other moves he wasn't planning on making before it happened.

The team who started Jon Lieber in game 2 and had a 89-73 Pythagorean record?

Man, if NY brought back CC, traded for another SP and started Montgomery in AAA as the 6th guy, their rotation would be as loaded as their lineup and bullpen.

So what your saying is that you agree with me that the starting rotation is the weakness on the Yankees as currently constituted, and you expect Cashman to address that weakness.

Good for the Yanks.
.083 = What Judge batted at Fenway last year. Having Stanton and Sanchez should help Aaron get better there.

Also, I'd like to see Miami and Tampa contracted.

Kind of, I think he was always going to bring back CC, but I think this deal will make dumping Ellsbury (NY's 6th OF currently, behind Judge/Stanton/Hicks/Gardner/Frazier) even more of a priority.

Also it frees up Frazier for a deal for a cost-controlled SP if needed (Florial is only a year or two away), but with CC back, NY would be returning pretty much the same exact pitching staff that held CLE/HOU to 14 total runs in a 8 game playoff stretch last year, so maybe a relative weakness compared to the other area of the team, but not an actual weakness in the bigger picture.

I agree that Martinez would be someone they should go hard after. But it DOES mean a glut in the OF, unless they either move Martinez to 1b or DH, the latter of which would force Hanley to 1b or get traded for a bucket of balls.

If neither of those is going to happen, it means the Sox would then have to make a trade, and JBJ is the most likely candidate. Then trade JBJ for a 1b with some power. Or go the platoon route and trade JBJ for prospects and sign Matt Adams to platoon with Travis.

Adams vs RHP (career): .286/.333/.495/.828
Travis vs LHP: .381/.458/.500/.958 (SSS)

That could be a fairly potent 1b combination if you platoon them, though the defense would be shaky.

Lineup:
SS Bogaerts
CF Benintendi
RF Betts
LF Martinez
1b Adams/Travis
DH Hanley
3b Devers
C Vazquez
2b Pedroia when he returns; until then, whomever

That's not as good as the Yankee lineup, but that's a lot more power for not a crazy amount more cost compared to 2017. Your defense is weakened some, but you also add the prospect(s) you get for JBJ.
Cora said this week pretty definitely that Mookie would bat first. Likened what Mookie can do leading off to what Springer did leading off in October. He mentioned Benintendi second as a guy that can give you a quick 1 - 0 or 2 - 0 lead. So, Mookie, Beni...

Guys - we land JD Martinez, our team top to bottom is every bit as potent as the MFY. Their lineup is nutso, yes, but that hardly guarantees a WS berth. Especially with a somewhat questionable rotation with high injury risk.

Lots of shit happens in baseball...it's why we have an annual Tommy John Surgery contest. And juggernauts are very capable of losing in the playoffs, unlike the NBA.

Relax.

Guzman is a very legit prospect.
The highest level he's pitched at is the New York-Penn League, and he's nine months older than Rafael Devers. I can't imagine they were too heartbroken to give him up.

Just say it John, its ok to admit the rotation as currently constituted, is the Ys Achilles heel.

If Tanaka's shoulder starts barking again, or CC feels a year older, or Severino was a flash in the pan,or Gray is really just a 4/5, the rotation that carried the Ys to ALCS, may not get that far in '18.

That said, the Ys will score 1000 runs and may buy a prosthetic foot to get them through the post-season.

Man, I hope the Marlin fan riots over this.

I'm pretty irritated about this. I really wish I had more to contribute, but maybe later.

Fuck Derek Jeter for buying a Major League farm team for the Yankees. And yes, I refuse to think rationally about this.

I think the list of extremely loaded teams is a lot more than that, even if you don't want to include Boston, which you should. HOU, LAD, CLE, CHC, WAS plus the wild-card Angels with Trout and Ohtani, plus the two AL East teams.
Houston, LAD, and Cle all won 100+ games last year. The Cubs are terrific. Washington never wins in the playoffs but they are pretty great as well. The Red Sox, honestly, should be a 95-win team (as always, assuming good health). But the Yankees just took a major step forward. Now they can deal Frazier+ and pick up better starting pitching - probably inexpensive quality starting pitching at that. They are now (if they weren't already, and their pythag suggested they already were) an elite team.

Crap.

I've always said that MLB is better when the Yankees are good, but I didn't mean juggernaut.

I wish I was living back on the east coast and could see some games in person again. The pre-game HR derby batting practice is going to be really fun.

Yeah, the team that had a slightly higher OPS+ on the year and still had Mo and Tom Gordon in the bullpen. That team.
Jon Lieber was an above average pitcher, even in 2004. I mean, not a great pitcher but a respectable 3rd/4th starter on most teams.

I'm all for being positive about the Red Sox chances next year, but ERod had knee surgery this winter, Wright is fighting to come back from both a shoulder and a knee injury, Price missed most of last year and had to finish up in the bullpen because of an elbow issue... I don't think the Red Sox have much of an advantage in the health of their rotation going forward.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not getting too upset about NY trading for a guy who's missed as much time as Stanton has and will make about 30m per year until he's 38. If he was a FA and Boston signed him today for 10/300 would we be happy?

The Red Sox' lineup doesn't have to be as good as NY's in order to be a better team. They were nearly a half-run a game worse than NY last year and still won the division. You can be better elsewhere to make up for it.

I think the Sox add one big bat, and I would wager that even the guys they have this year coming back will, on the whole, perform better than in 2017. The offense should be improved. Defensively, the Red Sox are tremendous. And their overall pitching staff should be excellent. I expect 95+ wins from Boston this year, maybe more if Price is healthy.
