I assure you it's more my playing partners being pansies. I've got layers, hand warmers and winter hats. I've literally played in the snow before, I just don't particularly feel like playing alone and everyone is coming up crying. It's supposed to warm up again next week I think, hopefully we can get another round or two in. Either way, I'll probably get them reshafted over the winter.
Was on mobile and thought Phragle posted this.

PP (and anyone else interested) -

Anyone up for a round of golf at Portsmouth CC late next week (assuming no rain)? I'll play in cold weather but not cold rain.

If I wasn’t out of town next week I’d definitely be up for that.

Could you be a little more specific? Let's think about Friday next week. Either AM (say, 8AM) or PM (say, 1PM) would work for me. What about you?

Layers? I can do a sweater. Beyond that and I can't swing. It's also now dark at 4pm because we follow stupid traditions and old people vote too much.
The thing with layers is that you just need to make sure your core has layers and your extremities are warm. This is really important since if you stick with layers of something like a thin thermal long sleeve shirt, a thin tee-style thermal shirt, a regular long-sleeve pullover made for golf and then something like a fleece vest you'll really never be cold. Throw hand-warmers in the pockets of the vest and wear a winter had and you won't feel like you can't swing. It won't be quite as free as shorts and short sleeves but it's not very restricting at all. I live in Co now and lived in Oregon for 10 years before that. Playing in the cold is required if you want to play more than a few months of the year.

Sun Mountain makes gloves w Velcro to attach to your push cart that have a slot for hand warmers. Just ordered those along with a thermal hat and an under armor. I have plenty of pullovers as well. Now that I’ve joined somewhere barring attic temps I’ll be out there at least for 9 a week to keep my swing solid this winter.

Sorry, didn’t mean to be vague. Friday’s suck for me. I’m at work Thursday night until about 2 AM and have the be back in by 4 PM. So afternoons are out and mornings mean I’m a zombie.

Phragle, it’s only semi private, but they have cracked down this year on non members playing before noon without a member in the group. I’m not sure if that applies to Friday’s or not though.

Hmmm that I may be able to do. I’ll shoot you a pm later after checking with the future Mrs, we got engaged recently and I’m unknowingly booked for about a million appointments in the planning phase. I’ll hit you up tomorrow when I get the latest update.

Yeah I know, my concern is the price. I'm not playing well enough to spend 125. I'm usually with a member or I know the guy at the desk which both make it way cheaper

Yeah that’s a very good point I didn’t consider. I forgot how much it is rack rate, I also usually play with a member. And I’m also rusty so should consider it. Nothing worse than dropping coin to go shoot a 110.

Guys I don’t know if you listen to any golf podcasts, that’s about all listen to now is podcasts, but check out No Laying Up.. it’s always a great listen but they did one with Twitter legend ClubProGuy that is piss your pants funny.

On layers, I found a Under Armour cold gear Golf mock shirt that is great, wicked warm. I’ll wear that with a fleece and my $450 North Face vest. Why $450? I bought it up at Joe Jones in No Conway up skiing years ago since Widows is right on the water. Gore Tex vest was about $125... wife had to have a No Face Parka that was about $325... she wore the fucking thing maybe 10 times (she doesn’t ski or thank god play golf)

I'm going to do a swing analysis tomorrow at Golf and Ski Warehouse to start the process of getting new irons.
Right now I'm looking at AP1s, Ping G and G400 and 790s but that could change once I start hitting.
As a note they charge $100 for an hour and if you end up getting clubs with them they take $50 off of that price.

In case anyone cares I ended up purchasing the Mizuno JPX 900 Hot Metal Irons. I'm an 11 so I was in between the typical "game improvement" irons and the "players" irons. I hit the Ping G400 and I200, the Callaway Steelhead and both the Hot Metal and JPX900 Forged clubs.
I tend to hit the ball pretty low so one thing that we ended up doing was to weaken all the clubs 2 degrees so I should hit the short irons about the same distance(as my current not so "hot" clubs) but higher and softer while the mid-irons should go higher and hopefully a bit further. That's the plan anyway we'll have to see how it works out.
I just got the 5 - PW, I'll stick with my hybrids for now but if I like the irons I'll pick up the 4 iron next year.
The only other changes in the setup from stock was to get them 1 degree upright and a stiff shaft.

I'm still interested in getting out on a day that is over 45 degrees. I walk rather than ride, so for me Portsmouth is $100, but I'll play less toney courses. My home course is Black Swan, which is a real bargain. If anyone wants to play on Wednesday, my calendar looks OK for that day, for now at least. I will likely be around all weekend and might be able to get out Friday or Saturday. Things are in flux so I'm not sure how available I will be those days, but it's likely I will be.

I got out today and I absolutely love playing in the cold, but the course was still full mid-summer price which felt a little ridiculous. It was 35 degrees when we teed off and the greens were aerated and could've passed for bunkers with all the sand.

I’m in the market for a new iron set that’s somewhere between a game improvement iron a blade/players.

I hit the Callaway Steelhead XR Pros and Mizuno JPX900s And 850s today. The Mizuno felt really nice w a 105g stiff shaft on them.

Are there any other Tweener irons I should look into? Didn’t like the Ping200s or the Titlelist AP3s.

Check out Mizuon MP18's. They can be configured in a bunch of different ways (blade to CB) and they are beautiful.

Well the rain squelched me today. Next week Wed - Fri looks good both in terms of schedule and weather. Black Swan is still open. Just sayin'.

I have to give @jercra a shout out. He said Bombtech makes some good stuff, and while I only hit a fairway wood I can confirm -- one of the best woods I've hit.

Gonna be great tomorrow says the weather apps. You down for 9 at the swan?

Everything on Callaway Preowned is 30% off right now. Damn good deal.
I'm not sure that's better than 20% off at 3balls

Tee time reserved at BS for 12:54 under my name, Tom Carey. There will be someone else joining us. I'll be there at around 12:30 wearing a yellow baseball cal cap with purple "LSU" lettering. Look forward to meeting you.

There's room for one more. Who wants to play?

Been mid 60s to 70s in Colorado since Wednesday and continuing tomorrow. The courses that punched early or not at all are in mid summer shape. Played on perfect 11-ish greens yesterday but due to Thanksgiving based hangover shit a terrible for me 80. Ugly on the greens with many a 3 putt but that will happen when you can't keep your eyes open. I did, however, have a GPS measured, wind aided, 355 drive on a part 5. 8 iron into the green. Easy 3 putt par.

Playing tomorrow with a late punched course so I have low experience but pulled off a 74 last time out there without my new driver and 2 weeks less healing time.

Ok, so, who won all the long drives between @Phragle and @Koufax?

Phragle is by far the longer hitter. It's a miracle for me to hit my driver 220. Phragle hits his hybrid up to 250. His direction may be a little on the erratic side, but he's got a powerful swing. We paid to play 9; stopped in at the pro shop making the turn, offered to pay more to play the back nine, and they said "Nah, don't bother, it'll be dark soon, you'll be luck to get in 3 holes. We got in 9. Phragle had never walked more than 9 holes until today, when he completed 18 on foot. He'll be sore tomorrow. I shot 98. I can't speak for him.

Played at Red Tail today. Had a very erratic front, couldn’t putt to save my life, made the turn in 47 and started the back double, double. At this point I chalked it up to a bad round and tried to enjoy the beautiful day. Then proceeded to the play the next 7 holes in 1 under with a bogey and 2 birdies. Also left a birdie putt on the lip and lipped out another one. Ended up with a 47-39-86. Golf is a weird game.

I think that’s my last round up here for the year. Heading to Nashville next weekend and will likely play there and that will be it for the year overall. I’ve carded 48 eighteen hole rounds on The Grint with 23 rounds in the 80s. Big improvement from last year.

Managed an 83 today with FORTY putts. I didn’t think it was possible to almost have a 1 to 1 ratio
Ok, well then I won't ask how the new putter went.

Yeah I stopped counting after I lost the perfect drive on 16. I'm actually feeling fine right now. What I needed after nine was a break, but we didn't have time, so we nearly ran the back nine. Took us only and hour and 20 minutes to finish the back.

I always play better on the back nine. How is red tail?

Wondering if anyone could recommend cold weather golf gear? Either lined pants or warm pants for walking, a good long sleeved shirt or layers that could be worn under a fleece vest. Any help appreciated esp while sales are going on.

Well, how cold do you get and how cold is it out?

Not this year, but i generally play until snow makes it an issue in NH, so usually in 40 and below weather. But, I also run hot. So I wear normal pants and then usually wear a thermal long sleeve shirt (I have one from UA, one Nike and one from Adidas, they’re all pretty much the same) or if it’s a crap shoot on it being a little warmer will wear tear off biking sleeves. I pack a thinner quarter zip from UA if I need a little more or I have a Footjoy shell that’s great. If I assume it to be really cold I’ll actually just wear my FJ rain jacket - those things let less heat out than they let water in. I usually don’t make it to the fifth hole before I swap that off.

I don’t think there’s a ton of difference between brands, go with the one you like or are most accustomed to. And unless you weigh like 120 pounds, skip lined pants. Wear a pair of thick khakis or even cords. If your hands are cold, FJ WinterSof are where you want to be.

Some good sales RN. Dicks is 25% off and 3Balls, Global Golf, Rock Bottom, TGW, PGA superstore, and Golf Galaxy are all 20%. Ogio is 30% off. That's about all I can think of for stores. I checked every site I could think of to find a sun mountain bag on a discount.

Not sure which bag you're looking for but 2nd Swing has a couple SM bags on sale right now, amongst a ton of other stuff.

Anyone want to do some simulator golf in middleton? It'd be fun if we could get a foursome together.

I've been a couple of times. It's pretty fun for what it is but it's really geared towards people who don't play so expect you'll do pretty well. Bring your own clubs. The stuff they provide is terrible.

Went to the one in Vegas and it was a good time, though the range maxed out at ~200 so it was just irons - not sure if the Orlando one is different / has more room. For Vegas, the prices were pretty reasonable too - they build in some $5 initiation fee per person that gives you a 'lifetime membership' but it's really just a starting fee. The games they have programmed into each terminal are pretty fun as well, even if your group is of varying skill levels - and the tracking on each ball is surprisingly reliable. One of those on the waterfront in Boston would absolutely kill, for about 6 months out of the year.

Agreed that the clubs aren't great, the one we went to had a whitelabeled version of the Big Bertha cavity-back irons, but if you're just messing around they aren't the worst clubs on the planet.

Yeah I used to go to (and almost took the GM job) at the one in the DC burbs and it’s what you make of it. If you want to go have fun, drink a few beers and eat some wings while you’re having a glorified chipping contest, it’s a lot of fun. I wouldn’t recommend using it for a driving range, however. I tried to use the tracking device to dial in yardages and I found it to be somewhat inconsistent. They may have improved that by now, this was probably 8-10 years ago.

Oh, well, in that case, it will be fine using their shitty clubs. You'll have fun. The food and drink selection was surprisingly good last time I was there. Just drinking and fucking around every 15 minutes when it's your turn is a good time.

From what I understand top golf is more of a bar that has a golf thing than it is a golf thing that has a bar, and you're a hardo if you bring your own clubs. Makes sense that was Jercra's advice.
