I had a similar problem this year. Only got in about seven rounds and couldn’t get off the tee to save my life. Everything was a snap hook and my normal miss is usually a high fade/slice. I realized that for my driver, my stance had become way too wide and closed. I moved my feet closer together, squared up and moved the ball back about an inch and presto. Fairways and hybrids I simply narrowed the stance and moved it back a little, I hadn’t crept into being so closed.Im so sad about golf. Life has thrown some curveballs but Ive tried to keep playing, and at some point I got the complete yips off the tee. iron play is great. Putting and chipping is good. But I can't do anything but snaphook balls off the tee. Whether with driver or 3 wood or even 7wood or hybrid at this point. My practice swing is perfect but once I get onto the ball it goes to hell.
Part of me wants to just stop playing for the winter and see if I get it out of my system but I love to play and I got pretty good this year, until this yip thing happened.
I'm am RIGHT there with you. I was actually just going to post today about how depressed I've gotten with golf.Im so sad about golf. I appreciate that. I literally shot 79-97-98-83-94-86-98 the last 7 rounds. I feel like I'm an Alzheimers patient who gains consciousness when my driver is on. And I do appreciate the advice, I'm sure there is a fix in there somewhere.I'm am RIGHT there with you. I was actually just going to post today about how depressed I've gotten with golf.
I'd gotten myself down to an 11.7, had been consistently in the high 80s, including like 10-11 straight orunds in the 80s. Just playing solid, consistent golf. Then about 1.5 months ago something happened and I've fallen apart. I'm either coming from way outside in and cutting across the ball or keeping the club face WIDE open at impact and not releasing the clubhead through. Or both. This is leading to hard slices, super high flared iron shots (I hit an 80 yard 9 iron that felt like I hit perfect the other day), super high ball flight in general, and more often than I'd like to admit - hard shanks. Yesterday I shot a 106 at ButterBrook and it was even worse than the score indicated.
It's all in my head at this point, but I don't know how to fix it. I've tried the range, I've tried drills, I've tried taking a break, and I've tried playing my way out of it. I'll still mix an occasional good round in, especially at my club, but it's made me really not enjoy golf anymore.
Anyway - I know the answer is probably a lesson and practice, combined with a mental break. Just wanted you to know you're not alone.
Haha my last 15 are 87-85-96-96-98-94-88-89-85-86-101-87-98-90-106. Some rounds I keep it in play and let my short game do the work, others I can't make a par to save my life. It's infuriating.I appreciate that. I literally shot 79-97-98-83-94-86-98 the last 7 rounds. I feel like I'm an Alzheimers patient who gains consciousness when my driver is on. You know, I stopped taking serious practice swings with all my woods somewhere along the line this year and it's been a great change. I do a little back and though waggle away from the ball to keep my wrists loose/fluid and then step up and take a quick rip it at.Stop taking practice swings.
Or try hitting balls with a tee between your left thumb and the meaty part of your right palm just below the thumb.
This sounds like me early in the year. Great, consistent mid-iron play but a game-killing hook off the tee. It's fixable though! The funny thing is my iron game is wonderful these days. Its just for some reason I can't force myself with driver to actually move my lower body and get through the swing.
Yeah this can happen to me. When I'm snap hooking the ball it's because I'm making smaller movements with smaller muscles to sort of whip it all the ball. I whip it too soon, the face closes, and every animal in the woods is in danger. To fix it, I set up for a push fade, try to use longer levers and the big muscles, and hit through the ball. One good hard fade gives me enough confidence to go back to my normal draw. The funny thing is my iron game is wonderful these days. You are dangerous out there. I wouldn't want to stand on an adjacent fairway with you on the tee.Anyway, lately I'm poking the ball around 250-270 with some consistency and it feels really really good. If I can carry some momentum into next year I might be dangerous out there.
When I miss, I miss big, but it's long! Big shot, baby! You are dangerous out there. I wouldn't want to stand on an adjacent fairway with you on the tee.
Moved my feet closer together and stood slightly closer to the ball and I smoked some drives right down the pipe this morning which is something I have done in a while. Well it didn't seem to help the 3 putt problem...Golf is easy huh? Just listen to some random advice on the internet and there ya go!
I'd add a ping set to your list to try out. Their irons are rock solid for the type you're looking for.Thinking about a new set of irons for next year. I’m in a six year old set of TM R11s that I’ve never really loved and I have literally blanked on gift ideas when family has asked me for birthday and Christmas ideas. I’m thinking I’ll have them crowd source and just amass enough gift cards to get a full fitting and set of new sticks. Wondering if anyone is playing something new this season? Thinking the final five will be:
Titleist 718 AP1
TM M1
TM P-790
Mizuno JPX Hot Metal
Callaway Epic
Anyone playing any of these? I intend to get fit then use a tracman to narrow it down, but just wondering if anyone plays them or has hit them?
These are very different iron sets. Ap1s and M1s are very game improvement and 790s are a players iron. Also I don't think much of the Epics and they're like 2 grand.Thinking about a new set of irons for next year. Good point. I've really liked the Ping G woods and hybrids I got this year. I'll have to test drive them.I'd add a ping set to your list to try out. Their irons are rock solid for the type you're looking for.
Yeah, sorry, I meant the Apex, not the Epic. I've been trying to get a good read on the P790s since they were released and my understanding has been what FL4WL3SS says below, that they're middle ground and then the 770s and lower numbers are players irons. These are very different iron sets. But that's why I intend to do what I did last time and go to the local shop, spend a session with the ones I have an eye on and narrow it down to 3-4 to walk into the fitting with in mind; then let the numbers make the choice. I have a feeling it will be like last time and come down to the AP1s and the newest TM model. Last time I really wanted the AP1s but I promised myself I'd let the tracman make the choice and the numbers were better on the R11s.The 790s are not a players iron. They are a happy middle ground between a game improvement and players iron.
They're a players iron according to TaylormadeThe 790s are not a players iron. They are a happy middle ground between a game improvement and players iron.
The Apex are one of my favorite irons and the epic are one of my least favorite, so good stuff. Regardless if I'm right or if Fl4wless is wrong about the 790s, I still think your list is a little too short and diverse. I thought you meant the M2s (the M1s make more sense) but the AP1s are still a bit of an outlier in that list. To bridge the gap and if you like Titleist, I'd add the new AP3s to your list. If money is tight and you don't mind Nike the Vapor Fly Pros are a good option too. I went with them after hitting thousands of balls with similar clubs to the ones on your list, and I couldn't be happier. The M2s look (admittedly I haven’t seen anything in person, just going off pics online) a little too clunky for my eye. They're a players iron according to Taylormade

Take a lot of them, stick to working on specific things one at a time and don't get discouraged easily. It takes a lot of reps to change muscle memory to the point of it being reliable. Also, talk to people you are considering if they are more visual teachers or verbal teachers and which kind of learner you are. The most productive lessons will come from a match in styles and their ability to convey through that style. I'll give you an example.Speaking of lessons, does anyone have any tips or experience with them?
100X this. I don't learn visually at all. I have to feel things, watching video is worthless to me, anything besides actually feeling it. A lot of pros cant teach that way.Take a lot of them, stick to working on specific things one at a time and don't get discouraged easily. I tend to cast and have an outside to in swing path. I can control it with my irons, but when I get to my driver, it's a high slice. I took a few driver lessons and the pro started by showing me what I was doing wrong and trying to get me to replicate his swing. I was having trouble with it. He finally asked me "did you ever play baseball?" I said yes. He asked "ok, runner on second, no outs, what are you trying to do?" I said hit it to the right side. He said "exactly; now I want you to hit that golf ball into the hole between the 1B and 2B." And it clicked for me. He was able to relate it and translate the mechanics into a thought process. Find someone that can do that and you're gold.
Check 3balls.com. I just upgraded all my woods to the most recent G (previous to G400) series this summer. They have a used section where you can get clubs for less and they usually are doing sales on those on top of it. If you go with the "awesome" condition, you generally get clubs that you couldn't even tell have ever been hit - usually store models, that may have been hit with tape on them. I've had some come with the shrink wrap still on. And they almost always offer 115% trade in value on your old ones. I think I got a 3W for like $120 and hybrids for about $105 and none of them had a scratch on them. Now I really want to upgrade my fairway woods and I am giving strong consideration to the Ping clubs, but wondering if I am going to see a big difference if I look for a deal on the previous G models as opposed to paying full freight for the new G400 series.
I like the previous G model more. Try the tour shafts too -- I like them better. Those fairway woods were a revelation to me, likely because I have never invested in them and I currently only carry a fairly ancient (late 90's?) steel-shafted Taylor Burner Tour Spoon that I almost never use - my longest club I actually use aside from the driver is a 3 hybrid. Yeah, I got the driver with the tour shaft but the 3W, 3H and 4H with the stock Alta shaft and I really didn't like how whippy and light they were. I found pulled tour shafts on ebay for like $10 a piece and plan to reshaft them before next season. Unfortunately since we have gone from 65 directly to 40 degrees up here, I don't think I'll get another round in this season.I like the previous G model more. I assure you it's more my playing partners being pansies. I've got layers, hand warmers and winter hats. I've literally played in the snow before, I just don't particularly feel like playing alone and everyone is coming up crying. It's supposed to warm up again next week I think, hopefully we can get another round or two in. Either way, I'll probably get them reshafted over the winter.Buy layers.
