Hayward to Boston...Really, We Mean It

The most likely story is just that Hayward said roughly 'whether there's a competent point guard or just Dante Exum matters to me' and some took that as love for Hill and others as a challenge Rubio solved.

I suspect he's something like equally fine with either, given he played so few games with Hill

Celtics meeting was by far the longest. Not sure it matters but interesting.

Also, flying in Ricky Rubio from Spain to be part of this huge partnership pitch is kind of laughable.
Or maybe resigning his best mate Ingles and having the best defensive center in the league Gobert are the pitch? And Gobert will be the best center on both ends next year. The Jazz have a better group of players with Hayward than the Celtics have without him.

Free agency.

Of course not. I'm just not sold on freaking Ricky Rubio being such a big factor here. Especially since Boston has IT4 and Miami has Dragic who are much better players at that position.
I don't think it's so crazy to think that a scorer would prefer playing with Rubio to IT4.

But really, I don't think anybody is saying Rubio is some huge factor. They're just saying that Rubio's presence there should put the George Hill theory to rest.

Lol at Twitter analyzing Ainge and Stevens' every move at the Summer League game. Was NBA free agency always this fun or can we thank Twitter?

Would you turn down a 50% raise because your best work friend transferred to a different office?
Yes. Trick question because my wife is my best friend... she might be reading this, you never know.

My hunch is that Hayward returns to Salt Lake City: 1. He can make more money there than Boston or Miami. 2. Familiarity, the devil you know and all that, 3. Salt Lake City is pretty spectacular. Was there exactly six years ago and I'm dying to go back. 4. The Jazz are a strong team already. Duh. 5. Ricky Rubio.

Regardless of what happens the NBA offseason has been a blast hasn't it? The MLB hot stove has never been this fun.

Bullshit, the MLB Hot Stove always used to be this fun.

I don't know how old you are, but if you recall the Mike Mussina sweepstakes that ended up with us throwing money at Manny as our second option, those were crazy fucking days.

I can't tell if it was actually better back then or if it was just because I was 10 years old, but that truly was an epic time for baseball offseasons. I think the NBA offseasons have gotten a lot better since there is now more flexibility for moving big time players around. The league is also in a golden age for talent.

Haha. I was half joking. The early aughts were great. I was hitting refresh on the Kevin Millar thread here like a maniac. Things aren't the same though. The Sox traded one of the top prospects in baseball for Sale over the winter and while I was happy about the outcome I wasn't as wrapped up in it as I might have been ten years ago.

Is he announcing tonight? Been away all day.

Also, hasn't been talked much but Hayward tried to leave Utah once before. 4 years ago signed offer sheet with Charlotte. Utah was a lot crappier then tho.
Utah told everybody they were matching any offer he got that summer. He knew he wasn't leaving, it was just about finding a max offer.

Then why not just sign a deal with Utah instead of accepting an offer from Charlotte? Or is that not allowed? Forget when it comes to RFA

None of the above.

I'm pointing out how silly it is that some people here are still clinging to the notion that Hill's leaving irreparably hurt Heyward's feelings.
I don't think anyone said quite that.

I think it's more that if last week Hill was "important" and this week Rubio is "important" that maybe they really aren't all that important.

It's standard for the borderline Max RFA guys. The Wizards did same this year with Porter and he got the Kings to put it on the table for him.

You want the max? Go find the market for it and we'll match. A savvy agent can always find a team looking to make a big PR move by signing the RFA to a max that all parties know will be matched.

The person I replied to said that.

His wording was that "By all accounts, Hayward wanted Hill re-signed" and that "Hill was his guy at PG."

The NBA has gotten real good with it but MLB always had been. I mean Curt Frickin Schilling came into our chat room here asking about being a Red Sox prior to signing! You don't get much more awesome than that.

Remember when the Heat traded up to grab Shabazz Napier because LeBron James liked him? I'm not that worried about Rubio.

So he's apparently sleeping on it tonight - I think that bodes well for leaving.

No way I could "sleep" on something like this but more power to him

It's also possible that he knows his decision but is "sleeping on it" out of respect for one or more teams - PR. For example, if you knew you were leaving Utah, announcing it to the world right after having dinner with them would be poor form.

I have no idea what his sleeping on it means, but I do know that Aldridge confirmed Amick's report.

I hope it's in the morning. I don't want to spend my holiday refreshing SoSH.

Yes, but announcing you were staying in Utah really would not be.

So, my read is if he's torn, he's clearly thinking hard about leaving...do it Gordon.
Ok who is manning the SOSH chat room tonight to convince him? We convinced gamer Curt...we can win over gamer Gordon too!

I think he's definitely leaving and just doesn't want to make Utah think they never had a chance. Sleeping on it out of respect.

I've been expecting Hayward to sign here for a long time. Going to be sports crushed if it doesn't happen.

just a note.... the money is basically negligible, wherever he goes he'll want an opt-out after 3 years so he can sign a new max as a 10 year player the most money is likely in Miami actually since the lack of income tax on his home games eats up the small difference over the 3 years that Utah gets with larger raises.
Overall though, the money is basically the same everywhere.

But IT4 and Dragic are shoot-first point guards. If you want a point guard to make you look like James Worthy, get a pass-first point guard. Rubio can make his teammates look good.

Of course, that means that George Hill is going elsewhere, and Hayward knows it.

Lol at Twitter analyzing Ainge and Stevens' every move at the Summer League game. Was NBA free agency always this fun or can we thank Twitter?
It really helps to have an up-and-coming, fun-to-watch team with a war chest with the best collection of future assets the NBA has to offer. I don't remember NBA free agency being much fun at all during the Ricky Davis Era.
4th of July.

Boston.

Come on.
Hayward's decision is announced in the Hatch Shell -- he sets off the cannons for the 1812 Overture. All of Boston's church bells ring out.
