Oh, that was so bad by Press. That's soccer 101. Not sure what Pugh is doing running ahead of the ball in that circumstance, but she did, and you can't pass it to her.

That was well done by her, a great touch to an open spot and a great finish. Then she jacked up that next play by getting offside, but I think she thought Press was going to take the shot. Damn kids.

That's mostly on Press, a lot of players do what Pugh did, it's a distraction and gets you in position for a rebound. If Press shoots they won't call it.

But even if Press takes the shot, Pugh still needs to be in position to possibly score on a rebound off the keeper or post.

Still, you're right -- she's a kid, and she probably won't make that mistake again, so good that she makes it in a game where the USA is ahead. I just hope they keep the lead.

Wouldn't she have been offside on a rebound?

Ellis making her third substitution with 30 minutes left is a bit of a risk in a 1-goal game. If a player takes a knock, they may have to play a player down.

unlikely, it's where an opponent or the ball is when it deflects not when the shot is taken, so in the unlikely event Press doesn't score it's likely the ball is in front of her, plus the defender will be moving back into the play.

I don't think that's right unless the ball is deliberately played by an opponent.

California. Duh.
Doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. 1 point wins the group.

If they were going to have a hiccup, this was the game to have it happen in.

I don't care how well a free kick is taken, that shot can't go in. I'm shocked Solo blew it that badly.

Press fucked up a 3 on 1 badly. Won't matter because Colombia isn't gonna score again.
Oops. Thankfully, the point was enough.

Agreed. Completely misplayed it - not something you see every day. Just... Wow.

You may be right...but if that's one of our players taking and making that shot, we're all saying it's an amazing free kick. It WAS as perfect a shot as you can take from there. Solo played so well against France, so I guess we'll take the stinker and the point and be happy she saved them a full3 a few days ago.

US is the early game today - lots of kvetching about the field in Brasilia, as it is in tough shape following 9 games in 9 days. The US has complained, but what the hell can be done? It affects both teams, and if it affects the US more, it's because they are controlling possession and are likely winning.

Julie Johnson returns to the back line for Ellis. I think we have missed her ability in the air; hoping she is healed up and was close to 100% fit as possible.

Now that the game has started, you can really see the terrible, and I mean, terrible! condition of the field. I'd be pissed, too. It looks like there were 100 golfers just hitting wedges for a few hours out there. Divots everywhere. US already looking strong with several scoring chances and two corners in the 1st 3 minutes.

Level after 60 minutes. Sweden has taken to simply fouling the US attackers join almost every possession, and was finally given a yellow on the last one, which seemed to be more of the accumulation than that actual foul being yellow-worthy. The US has squandered some decent chances thus far. They need to convert soon.

Edit: Aaaaaand, I spoke to soon. Sweden just scored on a quick counter attack straight up the seam. Solo beaten low to the right side. Ugh.

Showing the power of matchups and familiarity. Sweden got murdered by Brazil, only tied China because China didn't try to score, and struggled with S.A. Yet now have a chance to knock off the US

There have been a couple of chances in the air for the US that have made me miss Abby Wambach. They just don't have that. Crystal Dunn just went up for a great ball in the box, and, well, she's short!

Carly Lloyd has played quite terribly. Shots she normally scores on, she has missed the goal entirely, about 3 or 4 times, it seems. Need a finish here!

Feels like the US really struggles in the rare matches where they aren't at a huge physical advantage. Give them a Japan or China where they have height, strength and speed advantages everywhere and they dominate. A Sweden or France who can match them in 2 of the 3 and they get very stagnant.

Rapinoe seems to spear a Swede in her gut, the US gets essentially a man-up situation while the Swedes quit play for a few seconds, and convert! Morgan on a good follow!

Yeah that was a pretty scummy set of play by the US. Get away with a bad foul, don't put the ball out when a player is down and score off it.

So now, am I wrong? Is Heath now dropped into the 4th back? Hmm.
I saw her play there in a couple of the friendlies after the World Cup. I assumed it was to get her some time there in case she needed to do it in an emergency due to the smaller Olympic roster.

The lack of travel and lack of playing in Manaus has to benefit Sweden here. The US legs have got to be hurting a bit. I think I just read something about a 4th sub being allowed in extra time during this Olympics? If that's the case, the US has 2 left, I think.

Yep. Have to assume one will be sub for a sub to get Rapinoe off.
