Red Sox acquire Drew Pomeranz for Anderson Espinoza

i am trying to like this but Espinoza seems like a lot given the teams inability to develop pitchers. Perhaps Banister sees something he can tinker with in order to bring the walk rate down, but that still doesn't address the innings pitched.

You might as well be fair and mention the crazy high strikeout rate too. Espinoza's awesome to dream on but he's so far away that by the time he even contributes, Bogaerts could be a free agent.
This is where I'm at.

Pomeranz' sparkly ERA is inflated by a high LOB% and a low BABIP. He is accordingly outperforming his DIPS stats, but even so his FIP/xFIP are very good at 3.18/3.66.

Pretty good groundball rates, too. This guy is waaaaaay more than the #4 starter I assumed we'd get.

Espinoza is one of the Red Sox 3 best pitching prospects since Roger Clemens. The other two are Lester and Buchholz. I think that sums it up fairly well.

Padres managed to turn Marc Rzepczynski and Yonder Alonso into Anderson Espinoza. Touche AJ Preller.

If we have to give up a top prospect, giving up the one in the lowest level of the minors is my preference. It's a long way to the show, not so much for Devers, Moncada, Benintendi.
Yeah, I'm with this sentiment. It's not like Espinosa was ripping through the minors this year; he's really a ways off.

I think this is a solid trade if Pomeranz can make it through the season. Seems like a pretty big if though.

Career high in innings, spotty track record before this year. What could go wrong?

Glad the Sox are serious about improving the staff, but if Espinoza is in this, I can't say I like it.
He's not at a career high in innings.

Just FTR, Pomeranz had been back and forth to the minors quite a bit before the trade to Oakland, so he actually pitched 120 innings in 2011, 147 in 2012, then 86 in a half season before being promoted to the major league bullpen in 2013.

I mean, the rest of the deal isn't known yet, but if DD was going to give up an elite prospect for a SP, I'm glad he kept the three hitters and I'm glad he didn't go after an ancient pitcher like Rich Hill. I just worry about a guy whose value before the season was equal to Yonder Alonzo.

Keep in mind that this team needs starters beyond this year, and the free agency market is horrible this upcoming year.

This isn't just a 2016 move.

Really hard to make heads or tails of Pomeranz' longer track record because Rockies.

Can't contract that team fast enough as far as I'm concerned.

If it's Pomeranz for Espinoza straight up how is this a bad deal? Espinoza has huge potential but is far, far away from the majors. They keep all other prospects and essentially replace Espinoza with Groome.

If you're giving up a prospect of Anderson Espinoza's caliber you're doing it for someone better than Drew Pomeranz. Not happy about this at all.

Some pitchers just figure it out. Look at Carrasco. Same age, injury/walk problems. Like Carrasco, Pomeranz always had the pedigree (top 5 pick) it just took him a while to click.

Now we get to find out if he can keep it up in the AL East, /gulp.

So to manage the innings load Pomeranz becomes the 5th starter and gets skipped multiple times in the 2nd half?

Would've preferred a lesser deal for Hellickson or similar. Giving up Espinoza hurts. A lot.
A lesser deal for Hellickson could still happen if this is truly a 1-for-1 deal. Depends a lot on how much faith they have in E-Rod to get right and Pomeranz to finish the season with something in the tank.

Is he better than Buchholz or EdRo? Maybe we got a shot. Sadly trades aren't one way. Just keep telling yourself we still have Moncada and Benintendi. That's what I'm doing. Over and Over.

Making a deal with San Diego sticks it to Cafardo at least. He was wondering why anyone would deal with them since they stink. Welp.

BLASPHEME!

He'll be at least as good as Casey Kelly!
That is exactly who I just looked up to console myself on losing Espinoza.

this helps too.

Sure could, but what I was saying is I'd rather have traded for Hellickson with lesser prospects + kept Espinoza instead of dealing him for Pomeranz.

He's not at a career high in innings.
Fair enough, as I only looked at his MLB Bref page. Even with this correction he's still at his highest point since 2011, including MiLB stats mixed in, which maybe isn't anything to be concerned about, but I just don't see a half-season of Pomeranz magic worth Espinoza. Then again, prospect-lust rose colored glasses may be firmly in place with this assessment.

On the plus side, the 4th and 5th starters have been horrible and this increases the chances this year a lot. And the FA market this offseason sucks and now we don't need to sign anyone. Which means we should keep our first round pick next year. And Pomeranz is hopefully good enough that they could potentially get compensation if he eventually leaves as a FA. Also, 18 year old pitchers who throw as hard as Espinoza are risky.

On the down side, Espinoza has Cy Young potential.

Put me in the "this is about more than 2016" crowd. The market for SP is so, so bad right now that the price was going to be high, and remain there until I don't know when. So you either do these sorts of deals or wait for guys. Also Groome replacing Espinoza helps us choke it down I guess.

Maybe that's why Edro gets the first start tomorrow, so they have the most possible time to gauge his progress before the deadline.

If it's any consolation, the comments under Dennis Lin's recent tweet are from Padres fan(s) saying San Diego got screwed

Hopefully this means they are going to get Groome signed and that Kopech is on the right path

I'm back off the ledge if it's "only" Espinoza but it still really, really hurts to even type Espinoza's name in this post

On the one hand, this makes me sad. On the other hand, I feel like it improves the rotation this year by quite a bit.

If Pomeranz can pitch well enough that Ortiz gets one more shot in the playoffs, then I can be happy with this deal.

I noticed E-Rod is starting tomorrow night right after the break, followed by Wright, Price, then Porcello. According to ESPN, Rodriguez would then start the next game, followed by Wright, Price, Buchholz, and then Porcello. I wonder if this is more of a "keep E-Rod on schedule" thing, or a "let's see if he's ready, and where we stand" thing. I'd say as of right now Buchholz is the odd man out, and possibly heading to the pen to alleviate the loss of Taz (although not necessarily taking his high leverage innings, of course).

I'm in line with this. Espinoza is worth more than Pomeranz. Any more added to this deal going east to west would make this a terrible deal. As it stands, it is still bad. Pomeranz has a lot of pressure on him now to pitch very well as a result. Can he?

Say one thing, DD has a track record of not being afraid to give up quality to shore up holes. He continues that track record here.
