I really hoped for Belgium to (surprisingly) come out firing. It´s early, so...let´s wait, how their offense clicks.

Just getting to the game -- why in the fucking fuck wouldn't you start Vertonghen with Alderweireld?

Edit: in their natural spots I mean.

IIRC in past tournaments Belgium have been really slow starters.

It was a beautiful pass, but Ciman was just sleeping and Alderweireld slightly misjudged the ball...
Now we´ll see Italian football at it´s best..
At least i thought it, but it seems the Belgians got a knock-out punch.
Clattenburg is too much laissez-faire...

Kasey Keller's halftime comments about Belgium's body-language and attitude coming off the pitch was the first time I've ever heard a studio analyst make a cogent point about teamwork and camaraderie, ever.

But that's because he basically said what I said up thread: Belgium looks like a bunch of individuals all doing their own thing, as opposed to looking like a team.

IOW, I don't think it's about the lineup. Did Eden Hazard play in the first half? Could you prove it?

Hazard not being there was a bunch of nonsense repeated over and over by the color man. Hazard had the ball and made multiple attempts at creativity but Italy had 2 on him at all times and he had absolutely no one with him.

Belgiums body language was bad in the 2nd minute, let alone half time.

Although he's a giant lump elbowing donkey I will credit Fellaini for actually putting in a shift. I'm not sure if Nainggolan has broken a sweat yet.

I suppose its pretty typical of the commentary that we've seen so far from the tournament, but these two guys are just a font of clichés so far, aren't they?

Lukaku's first touch often lets him down. At this level you get found out a bit, especially against quality defenders like the Italians, who defend for fun.

Belgium forwards need to remember to send at least one guy to the near post. I counted 6 crosses to the defenders at the near post so far this game..

Italy started the half very hunkered down and Belgium was getting chances. They've since pushed up a bit and Belgium looks ineffective again. Italy can defend crosses all game.

That foul by Eder was beyond cynical. I know we all appreciate a good "professional foul" here and there but it used to be you more or less tried to hide it

edit: looks like 3 at the back for Belgium as well now

The post foul hoofing of the ball was sublime as well. They wrote the book on defending and how to hang onto a 1-0 lead. Tony Pulis is watching this with his pants off.

Haha, yeah, knocking it into row Z could not be ignored. It was the most complete stoppage of play possible.

sf121, the last 10 minutes are why people were talking about formation and tactics earlier. Belgium have moved to a more sensible formation and brought on a smarter grouping and they've pinned Italy back. Unfortunately for them all their striker options have a touch of Zardes in them.

Nobody on Belgium able to make the incisive pass because no one is running off one another. It's just station to station passing with perhaps one diagonal to a player who is then isolated, or hoofs in a hopeless cross.

Atletico tactics from Italy. 8 in the box, daring them to launch crosses to Origi and Fellaini all day. It's the right choice, just not pretty.

KDB has put it on a plate twice, as poor as he's been. Origi and Lukaku just didn't finish.

edit: Now thrice

Wow. Not even the 3 CBs bothered to track back there. What on earth were the Belgium defenders doing? Does Wilmots even survive the tournament?

Wow what a belly flop by Belgium, gives me hope Zlatan can rip through their defense.
