Stars in 6, Oil in 5. Setting up a really fun conference final.

I'm finding the west to be really compelling this year, in addition to the Bruins games. I'm kind of sick of Carolina and Florida.

Terrible goalkeeping it looks like. Edmonton scored 4 goals on their first 12 shots, including a couple of bad ones, but then they basically couldn’t get a shot on goal for half the second period and almost all of the third. They were stuck on 14 SOG for like 20 minutes and only got a few more at the very end with their keeper pulled. They are dominant with the extra man, but not so much 5x5.

Silovs was bad, though. I still the the Oilers win the series, but goalkeeping may be a problem for both these teams.

Canucks had a penalty in the first minute or so and Edmonton scored. I think they are now over 50 percent on the PP. But Canucks stayed out of the box after that. That’s the only way they can win, I think.

As someone who has never played, can someone educate me about tipping pucks? Like, how does this even work and how do guys get so good at it?

It’s a skill that is taught and practiced. Even coaches of kids’ hockey will have players do tip drills in practice. As a 12-year-old goalie I hated tip drills.

Here’s an instructional website with the basics of tip drills: https://www.icehockeysystems.com/blog/skill-breakdowns/redirects-deflections-tips
Thanks this is great stuff. While I understand that it is a skill that is taught, how much of it is luck vs. actual skill once deflected? Is there a comparison to BABIP?

It’s a skill. Of course there’s some luck but some guys know exactly what they’re doing when they tip. Recchi is a prime example.

100%. There is luck in whether it becomes a goal but directionally tipping pucks is a learned skill that guys actively practice.

James van Riemsdyk has made a career out of tips and redirects. He had 11 goals in the regular season. Here’s the heat map of his goals.

Wow — Silovs has been so much better. I didn’t realize this is only his 11th game.

All Oil now. Canucks just trying to get to OT.

I bet there will be a suspension. That’s pretty nasty.

Meanwhile, Silovs has gone from sieve to Conn Smythe candidate in just three games in the series.

Still don’t see how the Canucks keep pace with Edmonton. They have been staying out of the box pretty well. After the whistle dirty plays is not a great strategy if you are trying to avoid quick ref whistles. Oilers are just too good on the power play.

In the end, shitty goalkeeping may be Edmonton’s undoing. Again. I still think they win the series but it has had some twists and turns.

I'm SHOCKED that there is no suspension here, esp since it happed to a NHL posterchild while the offender is a giant piece of crap.

The last few days has really highlighted how broken this league is.

Does player safety still do videos?

I don't know how you don't suspend for that. That's rollerball shit. I think the answer probably is that they fucked up on the Bennett/Marchand thing. They got the reverse angle, and knew they fucked up, and now had to whitewash it, which they are doing in part by trying to stay "consistent" by not suspending anyone.

What message are players supposed to take from this other than that it's open season? Just a cowardly league. It chickened out because of some league grudge against the Bruins and now they have a train off the rails.

I always think basketball is bad, but then hockey comes in and says hold my beer.

If they're not going to protect Crosby and McDavid from shitheads like Trouba and Zadarov what chance is there of anyone (let alone a Buin) getting any justice?

The lesson apparently is to just goon it up Berube style. That's what the league wants apparently.

The thing is that first cross check they did fine is one we’ve seen Pasta take at least 5-10 times already this postseason, and no one has gotten fined for it.

He’s literally getting fined for the one to the back cause DoPs fucked up the Marchand one.

Raffi Torres is only 42. Maybe someone could grab him for the rest of the playoffs.

Nichushkin suspended for 6 months w/o pay after failing a drug test. As someone with first hand experience dealing with addiction I really feel for him. You can put a stake in the Avs at this point - I don't see how they win the cup without him.

Colorado puts together almost an entire overtime of sloppy play and then gets a great scoring chance that they blow.

Dallas should win this thing.

I was a die hard Whalers fan growing up in 80s (dad had season tix), and effectively stopped watching hockey when they moved to NC. Been watching more of it over the last few years without a real team to root for. Do regular hockey fans acknowledge that Vancouver has basically stolen the Whalers look? Same colors with Orca Whale..,

I haven't heard much chatter about it. The current Canucks colors/uniforms are a reversion back to the look they had in the 70s, but they've changed many times over the years. The canes still use retro Whalers 3rd jerseys at various times during the regular season.

While watching the Oilers try (and generally execute) passes in tight spaces around the net so many times I was thinking about how the Bruins seem to try alot of that, but don't execute nearly the same way (lack of skill I'm assuming).

Fun to watch when guys like McDavid and Draisaitl can make those types of passes in tight quarters that lead to amazing scoring opportunities. Looking forward to game 7
