Overall Career
After signing with the Red Sox prior to the 1947 season, John William "Windy" McCall made his major league debut in New York - starting against the Yankees - on April 25, 1948. McCall lasted only an inning and a third, giving up three runs (all earned) on six hits and a walk. The Sox dropped the game 5-4 and McCall took the loss. It was his only appearance of the season.
He returned to the Sox in 1949, though his success was limited as he struggled with his control. In 5 appearances, all in relief, McCall surrendered 12 hits and 10 earned runs in only 9 1/3 innings, striking out 8 and walking 10.
After the 1949 season, he was sold to the Pirates where he again struggled in limited work (2 appearances).
After a stint in the Pacific Coast League, McCall returned to the majors in 1954 and found a measure of success in the Polo Grounds, pitching four seasons out of the bullpen for the New York Giants.
In all, over his seven seasons, McCall saw action in 134 games, 119 in relief, posting an 11-15 record with 12 saves and a 4.22 ERA.
McCall's Moments in the Sun
McCall's best years came with the Giants where he was servicable coming out of the pen in 1954, 1955 and 1956. During this stretch, he posted all 12 of his career saves (and his 11 wins) with a 3.55 ERA in 233 1/3 innings.
