Overall Career

Wilbert Robinson (June 29, 1863 - August 8, 1934) was a player, coach, and manager across six decades. He played for seventeen seasons with the Philadelphia Athletics of the American Association, the Baltimore Orioles of the American Association and National League, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the American League Baltimore Orioles that eventually became the New York Yankees. Robinson was a player/manager in his final season with Baltimore and later went on to manage the Brooklyn Robins, where he won two pennants and was credited with bringing out the best in his pitchers. After retiring as a manager, he served as president of the minor league Atlanta Crackers.

Achievements

Player

In 17 seasons, Robinson had a .273/.316/.346 career line as a hitter, with 18 home runs and 722 runs batted in. He was a fine fielding catcher for his time, with some unremarkable defensive showings at first base and in the outfield. He set a record for most hits in a major league game (seven) in 1892 that still stands today. In that same game, he drove in 11 runs, a record that stood until 1924.

Manager

  • Record of 1399-1398 as manager
  • Two National League pennants (1916, 1920)

Trivia
