Overall Career

Wesley Polk "Wes" Chamberlain (born April 13, 1966) played six seasons in the early-to-mid 1990's for the Philadelphia Phillies and the Boston Red Sox. A power-hitting outfielder, he finished fifth in the 1990 Rookie of the Year voting but never lived up to his athletic potential. The Red Sox traded Paul Quantrill and Billy Hatcher to acquire Chamberlain in 1994. He started 42 games for the Red Sox in right field and at designated hitter through the rest of the strike-shortened season.

Chamberlain's Moments in the Sun

Chamberlain hit a grand slam in an 8-7 loss to Texas in 1994, but perhaps his greatest moment in Boston was during the 1995 season, his last in major league baseball when, on May 9, pinch hitting for Luis Alicea, he hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning against Armando Benitez of the Baltimore Orioles. It was his last home run and his last RBI in the majors.

Trivia

Following his major-league career, Chamberlain played several seasons for the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Gary Railcats of the independent Northern League. He made the league's all-star team twice, once at first base and again in the outfield.
