Team History
The Red Sox moved from Lafayette, Indiana in 1958, shifting their Midwest League team to Waterloo, Iowa. The team was immediately succesful, as they won one of the two half season titles and won the Midwest League championship. They would do even better in 1959, winning both half season titles and cancelling the playoffs. They did the same exact thing in 1960, winning their 3rd consecutive Midwest League Championship.
Waterloo would have the best overall record for the 3rd consecutive year in 1961, but lost the Playoffs series 3-2. They would also have the best record in 1962, but would lose the Playoffs series 3-1. Barry Shollenberger would win the Rookie of the Year for Waterloo.
1963 would show a change in fortune, as for the first time with the Sox, the Hawks did not make it to the playoffs. In fact, they finished under .500. The Hawks would finish over .500 in '64 and '65, but out of the playoffs. The Sox would end their relationship in 1968, after 3 consecutive losing seasons. The Sox changed their league to the Western Carolinas League and their team to the Greenville Red Sox.
