Summary: This novel gives an account of a boy growing up in small-town Vermont, with no real friends and not much to do, who develops into a major-league pitcher. The book mixes stories of small-town life and the pains of adolescence with a beat-the-odds story of a Red Sox fan who makes it to the big leagues. The boy's childhood is pretty depressing, and it was hard for me to identify with the main character, but the Red Sox part of the story basically made up for the slow pace of the first part of the novel. This is worth reading if stories of small-town life appeal to you, but it drags on a bit. If you're looking for action-packed Red Sox fiction, look elsewhere.
