WRKO replaced WNAC in 1967 and the format was switched to rock and roll. Known as 'Big 68', it was one of Boston's highest rated stations until FM radio took control of the market. In 1981, WRKO switched to an all-talk format.

WRKO's parent company, General Tire and Rubber, came under investigation and lost rights to WRKO in 1982. After Atlantic Radio Systems got out of the radio business, the sold the rights to Entercom, its current parent company.

In 2005, WRKO acquired the rights to broadcast Boston Celtics games. In 2006, it became the flagship of the Red Sox Radio Network as part of a 10 year deal between the Red Sox and Entercom. WRKO had been the home of Red Sox baseball from 1986 to 1994. WEEI was the flagship from 1995-2006.

The new broadcast team features longtime voice Joe Castiglione and newcomer Dave O'Brien.
