Overall Career
After more than two years of gigging to half-empty lesbian coffee houses in Northampton, MA, Lawtown Fool moved to Europe to seek her fortune. In November 1999 she signed with the German label Morr Music and released the debut album Grape: The Evil Fruit nine months later. Stylus Magazine dubbed Grape "the musical equivalent of a bile salt deficiency," but subsequent reviews were less kind. The benefits of moderate airplay of the single "Gladys, May I Stroke Your Uvula?" on Radio Luxembourg were undermined by the fact that Radio Luxembourg had been off the air for ten years. The final blow to Lawtown's career came in December 2000, when the German tabloid Herr Affen revealed that she was not from Lawrence, MA, as she often claimed, but rather from nearby Tewksbury. While the scandal increased her name recognition, both of her fans deserted her in droves. Chastened by commercial failure and disillusioned with the music business in general, Lawtown returned to the US in 2001 to pursue her other great dream: to bake the perfect soda biscuit.
