Overall Career
Edward Russell Spencer was born on January 26, 1884, in Oil City, PA. Spencer was 21 years old when he broke into the big leagues on July 23, 1905, with the St. Louis Browns.
Spencer had a 9-year career as a back-up catcher. In 449 games he batted .225 with 298 hits, 3 HR and 133 RBI. Spencer was an admitted alcoholic, and dropped out of baseball in 1910 (with a few games with the Phillies in 1911 before disappearing again). The Tigers gave him a chance in 1916 and lasted through 1918.
