Overall Career

After bouncing between Milwaukee and their AAA affiliate, O'Leary was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox in April of 1995. A consistent starter from 1995 to 2001, Troy played right field for three years before switching to left. The 2001 signing of free agent Manny Ramirez signaled the end of O'Leary's career in Boston.

In January of 2002, Troy was signed as a free agent to a minor league contract by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. 2 months later the Montreal Expos signed him to a similar deal. He appeared in 93 games for the Chicago Cubs in 2003, where he signed in the offseason. It was his final year in the majors.

After an 11-year career, O'Leary finished with a BA of .274 with 127 homeruns and 591 RBI. He appeared in 1198 games.

Moment in the Sun

  • October 11, 1999 - ALDS Boston vs Cleveland Indians - O'Leary hit a grand slam and a 3-run homerun, both of which followed Nomar Garciaparra IBBs. The Red Sox won the game 12-8.

Trivia

  • Troy was given the nickname 'Yummy' by his teammates because of his sweet tooth.
  • It was Troy O'Leary's grand slam in the 1999 ALDS that cause Red Sox announcer Jerry Trupiano to nearly rupture his spleen in excitement, a clip often played before Sox broadcasts with his voice-cracking 'WAAAAYYY-BACKKK' call.
