Overall Career
Emory Elmo "topper" Rigney was born on January 7, 1897, in Groveton, Texas. Rigney was 25 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 12, 1922, with the Detroit Tigers.
Rigney had a 6-year career as a short stop. In 694 games he batted .288 with 13 HR and 315 RBI. He led AL shortstops in errors in his first season but improved to lead the league in fielding in 1924 and in assists, fielding, and total chances per game in 1926. He hit .300 his first two seasons but had his best offensive year in 1924, when he drew 102 walks, second in the AL, while batting .289 and driving in 93 runs.
