Overall Career
Tony Pena, born Antonio Francisco Pena Padilla on June 4, 1957 in Monte Cristi of the Dominican Republic, is a former catcher who played for the Boston Red Sox from 1990 to 1993. He is currently the first base coach for the New York Yankees.
Signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an undrafted free agent in 1975, Pena made his major league debut on September 1, 1980. After a 7 year career with the Pirates, Pena was traded to the St Louis Cardinals. After the 1989 season, Pena signed with the Red Sox as a free agent.
A veteran of free agency, Pena went on to play with the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, and Houston Astros over the next 4 years. Pena played his final MLB game on September 28, 1997 before going on to manage the Kansas City Royals from 2002 to 2005.
