Talk:Red Sox Walk Offs
From SoSH
Maybe I don't know what the definition of Walk Off Run Scored, but shouldn't a walk off home run also count as a run scored (as you score yourself)? David Ortiz has eight walk off home runs, but only four Walk Off runs scored. This seems to me to be off. I'll try and fix this up, by using game log data. -mfy_the_chokes_on_you 15:04, 17 July 2006 (EDT)
Not having looked at the Ortiz data, I'd say the WORS is assigned to the player who scores the run that puts the Sox ahead. For example, if the Sox are down 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th with Youkilis on 2nd and Loretta on 1st, a David Ortiz home run would be a walk-off with Loretta scoring the run that puts the Sox ahead (5-4, theoretically) even though the Sox win 6-4. Walk Off Runs Scored were given to the player that crossed the plate with the go-ahead run. The first player to step on home before Papi has been the beneficiary of a number of Walk Off Runs Scored. bouchsox Note - Only solo homeruns can count for both a walk-off hit and walk-off run for one player.
Thanks for the definition of walk off run scored as the game winning run; I used this to expand the data to 1960 (around when event data files from retrosheet become unavailable; 1999 and postseason event data are unavailable but I adjusted those by hand). However I disagree that only solo homers can count as both walk-off hit and walk-off run scored, thats only if the game is tied. For example if down by 1 run, a 2-run homer gives walk off run to batter (runner on base ties the score, batter drives in winning walk-off run). I don't think you'll disagree, you just probably forgot to add clarification if score is tied.-mfy_the_chokes_on_you 03:35, 19 July 2006 (EDT)
Nice job with the updates and thanks for the help. For my note on solo homers, it was just meant for one player, directed towards the question about Papi's walk-off homers to runs ratio. I was just clarifying why Ortiz had 8 walk-off homers, yet only 4 walk-off runs. bouchsox
Outstanding work on this page. One suggestion would be to link the date of each walkoff HR to the box score at either Retrosheet or Baseball-Reference.com (where available). I'd prefer B-R.com because the info is more complete, and the play-by-play includes on-base situations and win probability. I realize it's a time-consuming pain in the ass, but I'd be happy to help on it. (mabrowndog, 5/3/08)
