Overall Career
Stephen Douglas Yerkes was born on May 15, 1888, in Hatboro, PA. Yerkes was 21 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 29, 1909, with the Boston Red Sox.
Yerkes had a 7-year career as a 2nd baseman. In 711 games he batted .268 wtih 676 hits, 6 HR and 254 RBI.
The 1912 World Series was the high point of Yerkes's career. He drove in a game winning run and scored a game winning run. That season, his first as Boston's regular second baseman he hit .252 with a career-high 73 runs. After three solid seasons with Boston he jumped to the Federal League in mid-1914 to make more money. He hit a career-high .288 for the 1915 Pittsburgh Rebels. He later managed in the minors and coached Yale's freshman team.
