Overall Career
Sean Berry's baseball career got off to a promising start when he was selected in the first round of the secondary phase of the 1996 draft by the Kansas City Royals, and he seemed to justify this status in his first year, hitting .319/.428/.483 in 65 games at Low-A Eugene. However, Sean spent his next three years struggling in High-A before he finally seemed to "put it all together" at AA Memphis in 1990 (hitting .292/.354/.446 in 135 games). As a result of his fine 1990 season, Berry received a September callup, and he made his major league debut on September 17, 1990.
Despite his brief callup, Sean would spend the next two years playing in AAA Omaha before finally being traded (with Archie Corbin) to the Montreal Expos for Chris Haney and Bill Sampen on August 29, 1992. It was in Montreal that Berry finally got his chance to shine, and from 1992-1995 he provided good production at the hot corner, batting .289/.353/.478 with 40 home runs, 149 RBIs, 31 stolen bases in 990 at bats.
Despite his production, the Expos agreed to trade him to the Astros in exchange for Dave Veres and Raul Chavez on December 20, 1995. Sean took his act to Houston, where he provided three more productive seasons from 1996-1998 (.283/.342/.476 in 1031 at bats).
After signing with Milwaukee for the 1999 season, however, Berry saw his performance decline dramatically during his age 33 season (.228/.281/.301), both in terms of average and power, and he was released by Milwaukee (on June 21) after a similarly unproductive start in 2000. The Red Sox, in desperate need for production at third base, offered him a contract, but after an impressive 16-game audtion in Pawtucket (during which he batted .368/.446/.526), Berry was called up for only one game in Boston, during which he played third base and went 0-4 with 2 strikeouts. The following day, Berry was designated for assignment (and eventually released). That would prove to be Sean's final act in the major leagues.
