Kroh's Moments in the Sun
- At New York’s Polo Grounds on Sep. 23, he became “Chicago’s hero” in what became the famous “Merkle’s Boner” incident. In the 9th inning, Fred Merkle (a Giants’ rookie), failed to tag 2nd base, thinking that the winning run had been scored. Realizing the mistake, Kroh ran onto the field, rescued the baseball from an avid Giant fan, and handed the ball to teammate Johnny Evers who tagged 2nd base. Umpires ruled the game a tie and scheduled it to be replayed a week later. Chicago won the replayed game, the National League pennant, and went on to win the 1908 World Series. The Chicago Cubs have not won another Series since.
